In this video we go through the basics of connecting an analog 10 channel audio mixer (Yamaha MG10) into a powered speaker (Yamaha DXR12). We then connect a microphone (Shure SM58) and headphone cable so we can connect a phone.
Starting with the basics, we like to always verify that we have a good power source at the venue before running any XLR or signal cable. Once the mixer is powered on, we check that the speaker also has a reliable power source.
Once the mixer and the speaker are powered on, we run the signal cable to connect the two. The speaker should be powered off while connecting the signal cable.
Then, you can connect your microphone and input sources, check their volume, and have an awesome event!

@@kettnercreative I am DJ-ING my son's Prom July 25th. The venue has the ION Total Max speakers, and I was told all I need is a phone or an I-pad to DJ there. That being said I use to DJ 25 years ago! So Do I really need a mixer or can I just run straight from these speakers, as they have two. Music through one and mice in another???

@@richardpizzahut08 I wouldn't recommend running music in one and the mic in the other. You'll be much better with the even coverage from having both sources come from both speakers.

I know this is a way late post, but I normally set up the mixer first to normalize everything and put on some music to establish unity gain sound levels. After the mixer is set with music playing, I add the main amp/speakers and set the volume all the way low, then bring it up to your performance level for the event remembering a room full of people will need more volume. If your mixer has an output EQ, this can be used to adjust for the room. Now when adding mics, etc, the cue/PFL,SOLO, or other name for channel monitor, they can be adjusted to nominal in the sound check so when they are sent live to the main, there are no surprises and people running for the exits as performance volume was defined before the event. Run the mixer at nominal VU levels regardless of the event size. Adjust the amp/speakers for the event size before the event starts. It is really amateur to turn on a mic and have the level horribly adjusted. Use the Pre Fade Listen, Solo, CUE or what ever it is call on your board to set the mic channel before the guest speaker uses it. Music is better than "Test, Test, Test". A mic pre cued and trimmed will just work. Checking computer levels, CD, DVD, Mics, etc are always best checked first with meters and headphones before going live on mains.

If you need to go further than 100 feet there are other options but generally for smaller scales and DJs they will not need more than 100feet, that is more for your music festivals and general music events where they then use cables Called cat5 typically however people have been known to use other types of cable

@Rick-zw7zv
@Rick-zw7zv 4 года назад
You're suppose to set the volume starting from input level (gain), to channel level, to master level, to speaker input level in that order to make sure you have the best signal to noise ratio.
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 4 года назад
I'm not sure that you're correct. By starting with the speaker level at zero, then setting the master at zero, then setting the channel at zero, it make sure that you're not introducing more gain than necessary, thus reducing as much noise as possible. The goal is always (95% of cases) to have the speakers (if they're self powered), mixer, and channel all at zero (unity), then introduce the minimum amount of gain possible to achieve the desired result. This is what I attempted to demonstrate in the video.

Hello, why don't you plug your mixer on the input "thru" of the DXR12 instead of the line input as you explain it on another video ? What is the difference between the 2 inputs of the DRX12 ? Thanks for your answer, Emilio (France).

The DXR12 has only one XLR input, but it has two different XLR outputs. Thru will send a copy of what is playing on this speaker to another speaker. Link out is for when you're not using a mixer. It will send the right output from either 1/4" or RCA to the next speaker which will give you stereo sound since the left input will play on this speaker.

Trying to connect a Rockville Power Gig RPG-122KK powered speakers. Trying to connect to the Yamaha MG10XU mixer. Not sure how to get the speakers connected to the mixer (or if its even possible). Any help would be awesome! THanks

Connect the XLR output of the Mixer into the XLR input of your Rockville Powered Speakers.

I want an audio system for a party hall which consists of 200-300 people. I want a speakers and mixers which one will be the best you think under the budget about 1000£.

I don't think you're going to be happy with the sound system that you get for $1000. For a hall that size, I would want 2x12" speakers on 2x18" subs, minimum. If you go with less, you won't be happy, especially if it's a party hall.

You would need a mixer and an amp of some type.

thank you very much for the video .. i have a question if any body can help my brother plays rock music and the event always take place in small limited space room . i noticed once he try to add reverb or echo's to the sound effect there is that whistling sound that comes from the speakers .. very annoying my assumption is that they are using larger speakers then they should in a small size space now am i correct .. and if that the case what is the standard speakers size should be used in medium to a small indoor space . to avoid the whistling sound and use sound effects without the troubles ? . if anyone can help thank you very much

How do you mean whistling? Like feedback?

Without knowing much about how he has things setup, I would guess that it has more to do with speaker placement and volume than it does with speaker size. I would recommend moving the microphone further away from the speaker and turning the volume down a bit.

How do you connect a Condenser Microphone to the MG10XU? already bought a "stereo plug to stereo jack converter" but when played on my mixer, there is no sound coming from the mic.
@jessetello7033
@jessetello7033 6 лет назад
i think condenser mics need phantom power. your board has a phantom power switch,plug in your condenser mic into one of the 4 main channels and then turn on the phantom power switch. i think this should work.

Your condenser mic needs phantom power. Your mixer has a phantom power switch for use with condenser mics. The problem you're having is the "stereo plug to stereo jack converter", whatever that is. Your mic is only going to work when you plug it straight into the XLR input. You'll lose the phantom power when your try to convert your cable.

That is right. Just push in the Phantom Power button on the board. You should still be using XLR and no adapters are necessary.

I would love to see the hook up to a piano keyboard. Is there any set up on a video for that please?
@545parsa
@545parsa 4 года назад
If you wanna hook up keyboard to a speaker, you're going to need to plug in your keyboard into a DI box with a TRS cable and then from the output of the DI use an XLR to connect to the Line in of the speaker

How would you connect a wireless microphone with this same set up.
@kettnercreative

Great question. Instead of connecting the XLR to the microphone, just connect it to your Wireless Microphone Receiver.
