I've wasted too much money having hardware stores sharpen (poorly) my chainsaw blade because I was intimidated by the thought of doing it myself. I have a neighbor(former logger) who took time to teach me how to sharpen it myself and it is truly a rewarding experience. Thanks for you inspiration!

Your pruning videos have been very informative. First year to get the cherries to bloom since moving in(they had mummified cherries when we looked at house). But lots of pruning and layed ash, wood chips, and chicken bedding in the fall and they are blooming full out this spring. Was pretty much sand soil.

Lee Valley sells a Japanese feather taper file specific for that type of tooth, also for cleaning the file, take a piece of hardwood and rub with the teeth line and it will conform to the pattern somewhat like a comb and free the swath. If you sharpen a couple times a year it will be well worth the price of $15 US

nice thoughts on life, and taking time to put attention on important things that might get skipped when busy working. I've learned the same things. fwiw cannabis has been a big help to slow me down, change my perspective, and then the things you talked about suddenly make perfect obvious sense, instead of being this weird abstract thing I'm trying to "get". Instead of being difficult, and failing at it, it helps "saw sharpening" type things become something I can get into and learn and succeed at.

Excellent message, and the tutorial is great as well. Sharp tools and knives are safer to use and much more efficient. Another tip: rubbing a little plain chalk on a file helps keep it from getting clogged so easily.

Good word. Life does get us down when our priorities get out of balance. "Martha, Martha..." The idea of testing the work by whether it impales your fingers did make me laugh. Especially the subsequent shots of blood getting worse and worse. 😆

12:25 - "once it's sharpened, it's sharp so ... be careful." - Good thing. Particularly after a long period of becoming habituated to dullness ... seriously. Also when going out to prune, too.

I’ve been doing rejuvenation pruning on my Blue Hollie bushes, how often do I need to resharpen? The wood is maybe almost 2 inches at the largest areas, the smaller branches I use my loopers and my hand pruners.
@StefanSobkowiak

Usually the saw tells you when it's not cutting well. If you touch the points and your finger sticks then it's probably sharp enough still. I cut for hours a day and sharpen once a year.

Nice video, awesome close shots, but you should take time to use the right tools! Files can work, but using diamond laps or corundum wheels on a rotary tool is easier and faster And a sharpening jig to create uniform angles. And a saw set to open the kerf and make sawing easier after removing some set while sharpening. A video with ALL the right tools would be awesome!

Good life lesson, keep sharp. Lotta saws these days have hardened teeth. From the sound when u filed, I think the one u demonstrated has hard teeth. Hardened teeth will immediately dull and destroy a good steel file. For such u need a diamond file.
@StefanSobkowiak

Thanks, it was likely a hardened steel. Great to hear from someone experienced.

@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 3 года назад
Oui merci.
@SebR-FR
@SebR-FR 3 года назад

Lmao. I laughed when I saw blood dripping. I don't know why people refuse to use protective equipment. It's obvious in this video that a glove and actually a larger file would have saved his finger (s) from getting sliced up. Not just that but dirty blades have the potential to introduce bacteria, viruses or other health harming agents straight into the cut. People please protect yourself from blades!
