Good morning and welcome to another TRC How to tutorial video and I am Chad. Thanks for joining us!
Today we are talking about head shaves. Now they are just like the way you shave your face...but not. The same but different. Simple yet hard. Confused? Well you won't be..just watch the video and read on.
For the razor and blade choice I would choose one that you feel is a rather mild combination. No need to go super aggressive for your first head shave. In addition it should be noted that if you are leaving ANY part of your hair on your head you may want to invest in a second hand held mirror that will aid you in making sure you cut in the angles the way you want...pun intended! Otherwise a simple touch of the hand will determine if you missed a spot or not
First and foremost you need to map your head the same way you do your face. Determine which way the hair grows. This is more easily done after a few days of growth and right after a shower.
Lather your head with a lather that is nice and hydrated with full yogurt consistency-like peaks. For your first head shave I would make sure you choose a cream or soap that you are familiar enough with to make this type of lather...experimentation on any software or hardware can wait for another day and should not be reserved for your first head shave experience!
Once you determine which way the hair grows, shaving with the grain would be my advice for a first pass. As with the face, stretch the skin, mind the moles, bumps, curves and divots because we all have 'em and they can be a bear if not paid special attention to. Make sure you maintain that 30 degree angle or whatever angle is the cutting angle for your razor of choice. Now take your time. This can be difficult at first but after some experimentation you will be able to build the muscle memory needed to get a smooth head shave on a regular basis. As with anything wet-shaving...it takes practice.
Once your initial pass is done rinse your head with some water to make sure it stays slick and hydrated. Your first head shave will probably go slower than you may be used to thus increasing the chance of your skin drying out in between passes...no need to take chances here!
Re apply the lather as you would for s subsequent pass on your face making sure to cover the whole area and have a nice slick platform for the razor to glide on. The next pass in my opinion should be a cross grain or some variation of it. Pay attention to which way your cross grain is going because your next pass will be another cross grain in the opposite direction. I do these in halves. What I mean by that is I start with my first cross grain going from nose to ear direction stopping at approximately the middle of the back of my head. I do this on each side of my head. I then rinse, re apply the lather and cross grain it again but this time from the approximate middle of the back of my head back in the other direction. Essentially ear to nose direction. On each side of my head.
By now you should have a pretty smooth skin experience happening. If you feel you want that extra something you can go one step further and do an against the grain pass. Now I know this seems like a lot of passes and that's because...we;;..it is. You have to remember that this is just a template. Something for you to be able to take all, some or even none of and apply it to your own wants/needs. I know guys that shave their head with one against the grain pass and call it done. I tried that once and let's just say that didn't work out for me.
The against-the-grain pass is like the others (assuming you have re-lathered here) the only difference is the cutting angle. I would suggest "riding the cap" on this one and slowly closing the angle until you meet the cutting angle and then going very gently. By "riding the cap" I meant holding the razor almost horizontally...keeping the top cap in contact with the skin and then shaving with short strokes little by little closing that angle each time.
After that I would default to you and say your post shave should be the same as what you do on your face. I am ausre this will be trial and error.
So good luck and remember TAKE YOUR TIME No need to rush this. As you become better and used to the routine it will get faster by the nature of things.
Anyway, that's how I see it, thanks for joining me on another TRC how to video I am Chad from RU-vid's CD Shavin, have a great day!

Thank you Chad for this tutorial I've watched it twice now because after the first time I shaved for the first time with a DE safety razor and chewed my head up; so here I am again! After watching the second time I know where I messed up. I didn't "ride the cap" and I went too fast! I'm coming off the Schick Quattro 5 and I really liked that razor but to get "smooth as glass" always caused irritation so I decided to give the de razor a try. Plus those cartridges are too pricey! I'm sure it will take me time to get as proficient as you and Mark Szorady (I've watched his videos too), but I really want to learn. It seems to me that when done right shaving turns into an experience to look forward to instead of a chore you loathe. So I'm learning about razors, blades, shaving soaps, aftershaves, and how to shave all over again to create my own experience worthy of looking forward to. I'm only one day removed from chewing the heck out of my head so I want to wait a good 2 or three days more for my noggin to heal and then I'll try and correct my mistakes. In the meantime I'll watch some more videos so that I may come to the sink more prepared next time. Heck I may even set up this video to watch and shave along. *THANKS AGAIN!* You make it look so easy/effortless and I hope to reach your level in the near future!

A hint for less irritation for people with sensitive skin. I don't use shaving creams or gels but buy Tea Tree conditioner and use that both for my face and my head. It's unbelievable. Leaves the skin feeling fresh and rash free especially for those of us shaving our heads. Highly recommended! PS: Yes, I've said this elsewhere and it's because I think it's good sharing advice to help each other out.

Yup. Conditioner is great. Good conditioner though. Been using it for shaving for 20 years. Combine that with a good safety/butterfly razor with good blades and irritation and bumps are a thing of the past

Try the Henson AL13 mild version. It’s very smooth and is good for a nick-free shave. The angle of the shave is designed into the razor cap. It’s arguably the best razor for someone transitioning from cartridge shavers.

Hey man, thanks for this! I have a Head Blade S4 Moto and it does a great job but the cartridges are so expensive, so I’m wanting to move to using my safety razor for my head and not just my face. I’ve used it on my head 2 or 3 times and had issues both times. Thanks for the pointers! Quick question: is there a recommended way to tan the head? Thanks again!

no shampoo or harsh soaps, treat it like the rest of your face; Also: change/wash your pillowcases more often; give it some time, it’ll settle down

Hey man question been shaving my head for few years, I tried dollar shave & now Harry’s. They work ok but do you recommend a straight razor like the one your using or those? I have sensitive skin too

bist du deutsch ? the razor itself is secondary the razorblades and the foam/cream/lotion for shaving are more important. i ordered japanese razorblades online and iam using "arko" shaving cream that works for me. you can also get less irritation by using hot water on your head either by showeing or wrapping up your head with a soaked hot towel be careful not to burn yourself this will relax your skin and open pores and increase the bloodflow of the skin

How long did it take you when you started off using a DE razor on your head? I'm new to wet shaving and I've only done it 4-5 times. I've gotten better at shaving the beard, but I always end up cutting myself when I shave the head. The last time was quite bad - I spent 2.5 hours trying to get rid of all the hair on the head and I still had some left (used to take me 45 mins with a cartridge razor). Also, how often do you shave your head?
@Weebill007
@Weebill007 2 года назад
Hi, if I use a disposable shaver it's usually BIC Sensitive double bladed. I soak the head with a face cloth then apply Tea Tree Conditioner and first shave with the grain then against. Hardly ever cut myself on the head or face with this method. If I use a Safety Razor I'll use a closed comb one that's mild. Best to use a mild blade as well but I have also used the Feather blade but they are probably the sharpest out there so caution needs to be applied (slow shave with no downward pressure). Preparation is the same as mentioned above (head and face). But I would recommend a less sharp blade as the Feather can take time to get used to. Some people recommend the Personna blade and they can be had cheap from eBay (100 pcs for circa $25). I want to try them myself. Having said that, the Feather blades are high quality but extremely sharp. I prefer a less sharpish blade as I have bumps that if I'm not careful will get cut. My last head shave with the Feather I only had one small nick. But nicks on the head really bleed. Good luck and try the Safety Razor if you can as it's better on the skin with less irritation and no ingrown hairs.

@@Weebill007 Hi, since the time I'd written the comment, I've gotten much better. I still get some random nick every now and then, but for the most part, it's all good. I'm now understanding the along, across, against the grain shaving. Still a lot more room for improvement, but I'm no longer discouraged by all the nicks and cuts. I'm using the Bombay Shaving Company DE razor. I've been using feather blades from the time I started using a DE razor and it's fine, although I still haven't gotten around to dealing with ingrown hairs. I've started exfoliating before shaving and there seems to be an improvement. Hopefully, it'll get better with time. Also, for dealing with razor burn, an aftershave with witch hazel seems to work really well. Thank you for taking the time to give advise to us noobs.

@@suhaaskaravadi9112 sounds good. I forgot to mention that for me I like to shave every second or third day especially if doing the head. The shorter the hair the less trouble. It's just harder when your skin isn't perfectly flat. Cheers mate!

Make sure the safety razor is completely sealed. If it's slightly loose, you'll butcher your head.

Safety razors are too risky, best use an electric shaver or a cartridge blade.
