When there are two cars it’s beneficial to blur the cars and keep the surroundings in focus, it gives a sense of energetic desperation for a faster car attempting the overtake

Went Silverstone last year and watched this video to get tips on shooting cars, sat on the grass bit on the bridge on the Wellington straight for some decent panning shots, rewatching this video because am planning on standing at Stowe corner this Sunday to get some shots of them coming off the hanger straight, great video and always a useful one to come back to, I salute you Kym your work is amazing 👌🏻

I honestly prefer watching these than watching how F1 cars are made. Definitely need a whole series on this! How you compose the pics are a documentary on its own! I tried shooting at Singapore gp but I had 35mm 2.8F and struggled with the fence lines in my pics. But oh well. Gonna try again in japan with the tips I’ve learnt from this but this time with a 70-300L 😅

At a slow enough shutter speed you only see the horizontal lines and they aren’t too distracting.

Thanks for sharing this video. More of such videos please. Do the photographers prefer a monopod or a tripod with these huge telephoto lenses? PS: Maybe a "Day in the life of F1 Photographer" type of videos will be very exciting to watch.
@KymIllman

Anything longer than a fixed 400 mm lens would normally require a mono pod and I’ve never seen anyone use a tripod

Motion blur... no problem. The problem I have is trying to avoid it at even a 200th on my 150-600 monopod mounted while tracking the cars, even down at 200mm. I select 200th to show movement in the wheels hoping to keep the car "reasonably" sharp while tracking it. Though I have not as yet used "spray and pray," it seems logical (? )that pressing the button for each frame is a mistake and more likely to induce camera shake. Perhaps cold weather, inbuilt old man shake and not using VR when tripod mounted.. Hmm..?

You where talking about the option to press a button to quickly change to 1/1000ths of a second. Do you know what that function is called?
@KymIllman
@KymIllman 3 года назад
You just set one of your buttons to a custom shooting set up. I use the button to the left of the shutter.

Great photos Kym. I really like the Ferrari at 3:00 👏👏 Question for you: how many of those moving shots at 1/30 do you miss the focus (on the car or helmet)? Like, what is the success rate? 😊 To get a realistic target for myself. Thank you
@KymIllman
@KymIllman 4 года назад
Success rate is about 1 in 12 at 1/30th. But that’s improving with practice.

Mr. Illman, thank you for the information, what I don't see addressed is how you select the level of exposure compensation you are applying in different shots/setting. Do you use a test shot, spot metering, experience. I noticed in your data panel that you tend towards negative compensation (I assume because of the reflective nature of many tracks/walls) any tips on this aspect would be appreciated. Is there a technique to street circuits?

Great video Kym! Quick question though, are you shooting on a monopod when you are shooting at such slow shutters? I don't think I would ever be able to keep the camera steady enough to get anything sharp at that speed with anything longer than a 20mm lens.
@KymIllman
@KymIllman 2 года назад
Only use a monopod for the 600mm lens

How do you set focus settings? I find when I pan with objects my camera likes to sometimes focus on the foreground in your case the fence and trees. Wouldn’t it be extremely difficult to pick up an f1 car in a focus point when it’s moving so fast?
@KymIllman
@KymIllman 4 года назад
My 1DXMk2 has little trouble doing it. Sometimes I pre-focus but most times its auto-focusing

By the way, you have quite a lot of dust on your sensor/lens :) I can see many dots when you're switching photos. But I imagine it's not possoble to edit out due to the fact that images are instantly uploaded to your cloud

I notice with the shot at 13:04 that the three photographers are all using Canon (I imagine all 1DX Mark II's?), what is the breakdown of the permanent photographers with regards to gear usage - is it mainly Canon, or do the other (lessor!) brands have quite a few users?
@KymIllman
@KymIllman 3 года назад
Most use Canon or Nikon but there are a few with things like Sonys but to be honest I don’t take much notice of what they use
