How To Shoot Portraits On Medium Format Film || Pentax 67

A brief insight into my portrait photography process. All images were taken on the Pentax 67 with either the 105mm or 55mm. I used a variety of film stocks, from the industry standard - Kodak Portra 400, to some more experimental Lomography purple film. (video was filmed before coronavirus)

The Pentax 67 can take great outdoor portraits as well as flash lite setups in a studio. Where it utterly fails compared to its alternatives (with their leaf shutters) is outdoor shot with fill-flash. The 1/30 second limit on flash synch for the focal plane shutter really impairs that usage. There is a leaf shutter lens which is intended to compromise that limitation, but it is a slow operating pain in the ass to use. I say this as an owner/user of Pentax 67 equipment as my primary photographic tool set for more than 20 years.

Randall Stewart agreed, that’s why I use an rz for most my studio use however I find that the leaf shutter 165mm and extension tubes can get just as good results just a slower process

N Molina it’s a tricky one cos for studio portraits the mamiya bellows system seems obviously the better choice but then I’d put the Pentax over the mamiya for natural light due to the 2.4 lens and 1/1000 shutterspeed and the fact that you can use a leaf shutter lens, WLF and extension tube on the Pentax to make it as capable as a mamiya in studio however you can’t adapt a mamiya to shoot a faster shutterspeed in natural light or get the extra separation from the 2.4. That’s my thinking’s behind it but of course everyone has different preferences so I think it just comes down to what you prefer using.

That pentax 67 is humungous you must have sore arms at the end of shoots! On the total opposite end I use a pentax mx. It's nice to see people still shooting medium format film, which digital has yet to catch up with.

Mate, for natural light portraits there is nothing better than a Pentax 67. Mostly because you have 1/1000s and you can adapt a lot of lenses to fit the mount. Your 105/2.4 is already a nice one, but you can get ISCO and Schneider projection lenses like 100/2.0 or 125/2.0 and get even more subject separation. Or you can adapt a large format Aero Ektar 178/2.5 lens to get an equivalent of 85mm on small format, and get super shallow depth of field + amazingly interesting bokeh.

KNUR Konesur I’ve been looking for the 100/2.0 for ages and have never found one for sale - I’ve seen some results from it and they blew me away. And yeh for natural it’s the best there is, but can be great in studio too jusr have to adapt it, leaf shutter lenses, ext tube etc and it’s very close to Mamiya standard in the studio, I think it’s the most versatile mf system

Good stuff man. I just shot a roll of Ilford Pan F with the 105 2.4 of my 2 year old son using the extension tube on most, backlit. It's a great camera (uh, obviously...) You're doing well with it.
