One point you mentioned... If someone is unfamiliar with silver service, and as you point out it is custom to keep putting food on the plate till they tell you to stop... In the same way you later mention if someone is unfamiliar with Butler service, during silver service, if someone appears hesitant or unsure, would it be acceptable to say quietly and politely something along the lines of "Please let me know when there is enough on the plate" or words to that effect? I do admit, I have struggled with silver service in the past, something I always have to practice before doing it.

I did silver service for a while it is still a thing, so many people were unable to deliver in this way and seeing some of the agency staff fail at attempting could be quiet amusing when the management dismissed them at the end of the day. You meet some interesting people throughout and may be in the presence of a lot of important guests so presentation composure and performance throughout the service is very important. Most instances people will ask for say only 2 potatoes or say no broccoli or I only want broccoli it will vary as you go around the table after serving food also you may be jumping straight to wine once assigned your table/tables you should not ever leave any cups empty, do not fill there glasses with water just make sure there is always water at the table and it is filled up throughout, and remember to top up the wine when it gets below half. It was always fun laying the tables, and setting up. Good video and tips, I don’t know what possessed me to visit this video in the night but good job. I worked somewhere relatively close to trafalga square it was amazing how I came across the place and how I got the job but that’s a story for another day. I might make some videos about it one day.
Would you use white gloves for silver or butler service? Just like to say the last time I had silver service was in 1988 when my uncle got married. In 96 I went to work at a hospital and I pointed out to the hotel services manager that she was advertising plated service as silver service for the private (patients) ward
Hi thanks for your message. You would normally use white gloves for Butler service but not normally for silver service. Back in the day silver service was a sign of quality but the changing attitudes of chefs and unwillingness to train waiting staff to a high level has ment it is very rare now. Yes I too have seen people say "Silver Service" when what they are doing has nothing to do with silver service but they like the name. 🙂
Hi, good question and something that I am asked a lot. As you can imagine there is at least one left-handed person on every course I run. The answer is, yes you can but it is really difficult. Most left handed people In have trained actually find it easier to "switch-hit" and still hold the spoon and fork with their right. I have tried holding the spoon and fork with my left so I can appreciate this is not easy, but it is possible. My recommendation is to try doing it both ways and see what works for you.
I have ordered one but still on lockdown and only essential shops are open so I have very limited equipment, sorry but I will make it better as soon as I can.
