Actually almost everyone who shouted at anyone might have screamed C5. But when you ask them to do it on purpose they usually fail, or they might be able to scream it, but not in a dark, jim morison manner. but it's harder to make them scream A4-Asharp4, cause the pitch perception tells our brain not to go into falsetto, make it bigger so we can sound normal and we grab. They don't know, that you can't make it sound big, if you don't adjust resonating chambers. A4-Asharp4 is the hardest part of the voice. At least for me, as I always want to make it sound as my G4, but then I cant sing Us and Ees. Being obsessed with tone and inner feelings really distract.

@tristanparedes

+HumbleTrader001 The language is, unfortunately, very poor in the singing community. You're essentially saying the same thing. If I sing in non-breathy falsetto and it sounds like it connects into my full voice, some people call it "full voice"; However, it's STILL falsetto. It's really confusing. But if you just THINK about it, it's obvious! Before you started training and learning all of these confusing terms you just had "chest voice" and you had "falsetto." All this guy is doing, in my opinion, is connecting the two voices.
@HumbleTrader001
@HumbleTrader001 8 лет назад
+You Can Sing ANYTHING! Ok, thanks for the explanation. That clears things up in that we agree he is singing in a connected voice. My own problem is that my non-breathy version of falsetto only normally goes up to a G or G# above middle C these days. Not sure what I can do to get it to all the way up to a high C without it getting too much like the hooty./breathy disconnected type of falsetto.

It is not falsetto, but head voice, or at best head dominant mix. Try to sing with chest dominant mix. I dont agree that anyone can shout a high C. It takes technique to reach it, even though it sounds "shouty".

@Roman Kyrylyuk Yes with time and work you can open up your head voice to sing higher much more easily, most men sing through high C pretty easily in fact. When I started singing I was labelled a baritone could get much above middle C without massive amounts of strain, now I'm a tenor.
@7pastorb
@7pastorb 8 лет назад
Mr.Wehden, I am an opera enthusiest but i would like to learn how to sing properly. i have a good range and i know i can sing in the more contemporary styles. I also had a lot of training for Choral and Stage Drama singing from my youth. However i want to sing in the operatic style and i believe i am a high Baritone, low tenor. It is only the very highest Tenor notes that i cannot sing without breaking into falsetto which of course makes my notes this and weak. i want to learn how to sing these notes with full voice and with power. Lower notes are not as challenging but a few steps below middle c and i begin to lose a measure of control over my vibrato and i begin flattening out. What do you recommend? And any ideas on where to find a quality operatic voice coach? please, any help would be greatly appreciated. Blessings!!!
@7pastorb
@7pastorb 8 лет назад
Also i would like to add that i literally can "feel" that the voice can go to the ranges i want to sing in. I know these are attainable goals with work, but i need guidance and direction.
@cwehden
@cwehden 8 лет назад
If the sound is balanced you shouldn't really feel any great need to break into falsetto at the top. Without hearing you though it's hard to know, feel free to email me some examples carlwehden@gmail.com In regards to a good classical coach I don't have enough experience with any to say.

Thanks for the video, mate! Your tips are really helpful. I'm a classical singing student and sometimes I do forget that to reach power way up there we have to start small and gradually add weight to the tone and that obsviously leads to straining and "widening" of the voice. I'll definitely add your exercises to my vocal experiments. Cheers and keep up the good work!

Late again. But i get strain on my headvoice. Sounds just like you but i feel a pull my voice at the high see. I try being narrow. I tried all kinds of different ways of doing it. My mix is piercing. its way to sharp. The sound is more less in my head and you cant hear it but it sounds wayyyyyyy to nay like. Like my cords are breaking. idk how to describe it. I have listened to a number of teachers on RU-vid who have tried to analyze and communicate this complex material but none who have been as easy to follow as you. Having grown up in England and hitched down to Cornwall dozens of times in my youth I particularly enjoyed your reference to sitting in the car waiting for your passengers to emerge from their stag night and experimenting with weird noises…..

I have one question, my vocal range is about E2-G4, but that G4 is forced, some people saying that I am bass, what makes me sad, because I have friends and we want to create one band, and of course we will start with covers, I want do covers for bands like breaking benjamin, three days grace, also papa roach, we'll I can sing papa roach but I get tired fast. So my question is, If I can with time, expand my range to sing that bands?
@cwehden

+Roman Kyrylyuk True basses are very rare even rarer than baritones. Most bigger voices can still rock pretty high, see Chris Cornell / Jimmy Gnecco. However it takes a bit more finesse / time to get to easy high notes for most bigger voices.

Great video, Carl! What can you tell about soft palate? Should it be raised, or not?
@cwehden
@cwehden 8 лет назад
+Ирруматор 666 Generally it should be left alone to do it's job, it will move depending on what is required for the chosen vowel, brighter vowels lower the soft palette sending more sound into the pharynx cavity, darker ones it will raise it directing more sound out of the mouth, a singer needs to be comfortable on any vowel through the bridge so really just let it do it's job.
@ronaldshepherd8531
@ronaldshepherd8531 8 лет назад
Two ways to do it. Most common is throat lock like what tenors does. Another way just medium belch, accompanied by vocal cord stretch, mouth wide open. High C is just a note higher than the highest note on famous Journey song "open arms". If you can sing open arms you are only a note away from High C.

You are right many people get one part of singing but not another. The best solution is to understand all parts of your voice then everything makes more sense. Unfortunately this takes time and work to do but the end result is worth it because your voice will make much more sense be much more consistent and have no tension at all.

hi man very good tips and help...I'd like just to add..what helps me to hit high notes..before singing making similar exercises..and try the highest notes with progress from the low to the high..until i feel comfortable. without strethcing the chords..if a note sounds even a little bad go to the previous notes and start again and always without feeling pressure in the neck and its muscles..at some point you start realizing that voice floats in the mouth and you hit the high notes like b4, c5, c#5..also I recommend not having a recent dinner before singing.. a good idea is to keep your vocal folds power and healthy drinking water all the day and have a smoothie of green vegetables helps me feel comfortable with my vocal folds to the highest areas and sing many songs without feeling tired. All these antioxidants..helps your voice chords..to feel relaxed ..give it a try with all the warm up.

+Sam Greenrod Yes! That is the missing ingredient. Big, powerful, full voice notes are one-register notes (not chest, not head) one voice, with strong dynamic opposition of the diaphragm. You have to develop the muscles that control exhalation and learn to manage greater pressure.

Hello, Carl. I really tried lots and lots and lots and lots of different "methods" but all the time mixed voice becomes vocal fry or just splits appart on A4, but i can maitain the notes lower quite consistently (i am baritone by the way). Is this wuf woof, what helps to fix this issue? Other coaches say to kind of belt it with "twang" and keep it high and bright ;( What should i do? :(

I notice that you have not mentioned the importance of using diaphragm support when singing such high notes. A singer will crack unless they strain horribly without the support, so to protect peoples voices, you must stress its importance. I'm surprised you left it out considering it is by far the most important part of a singers technique

@samuelgreenrod1812
@samuelgreenrod1812 9 лет назад
Carl Wehden However all of the tension that will be building up through practicing and tightening the vocal cords when you sing high will remain in the vocal cords. You referred to hitting the high note like Pavarotti but without sounding like him. He sure did use diaphragm support!
@cwehden

Carl Wehden You wont necessarily sound like any opera singer just by using diaphragm support, however it will allow you to sing safely for a very long time. I think Pavarotti had the best technique although I prefer Corelli or Carreras in terms of sound :)

@@aniketcomputertutorials9566 im sorry to disagree, i can do yodeling (break transition between chest voice to head voice and vice versa) my voice from a High C#5 chest voice to a C#5 falsetto of course. This would be impossible to do if it were mix voice or head voice. I trained with a Korean teacher when i lived back in China, he was able to reach to G5 and at this note he kept it for 3 seconds then switching it to falsetto, then to mix to show me the difference of texture for all three, and this all happened because i told him same thing you just said. He proved me wrong, he said when he was younger he used to be able to go B#5 which was his max chest voice. I'm sure you know yodeling and the technique to release the TA muscles (thyroarytenoid muscles), i can do this easily with B5, and i can with C5 as well but i need warm up before i attempt this yodeling switch. I can go up to a D5 sometimes D#5, and my teacher is training me to go even higher. If you want proof of it i can make a video and i can do the yodeling transition and i can even make it slow. Please do not misguide people, you might be a vocal coach but you need to investigate a little more. Males can reach really high notes, and i swear i can prove it to you if you answer my comment. Have a good day.

+Carl Wehden Idea is correct. Singing with thin edge function is way to go, however you need to show end result as well which is floating half mixed tone. Everything you sing is pure falsetto and its not only you but 95% of youtube vocal lessons that teach how to sing high notes. Why don't you show what it should really sound like once you have learned how to lighten your tone, cause all i hear is just compressed falsetto voice. Maybe i just have not seen it, gimme link to the video where you sing high C in full voice. I dont mean to be rude or anything, i just want to know what your full voice sound like up there.

+Carl Wehden I understand. I would not bother you but thing is that singing well is very difficult activity and its even harder to teach it and how does one teach something he himself has not mastered yet. Voice is a delicate thing or wrong and half informed advice can ruin it very quickly. In my humble opinion teaching voice should be left to those who have accomplished mastery and really understand mechanics of properly produced voice as well as science behind it, those. Those who not only hear difference but can also demonstrate.

Edwin myers said: "unfortunately knowing precisely how a flute works will not make you a virtuose player, nor will knowing how the voice works make you a great singer, this is the difference ." - This is... - mostly, not true. you won't be able to find any educated professional singer that doesnt know how the voice works anywhere, in fact i'd bet that even most professional amateurs knows the anatomy more or less in the detail too. I say this as an opera singer in education. Now this term virtuoso... This is a term that i'd urge you not to use as it doesn't really mean anything other than "this person is above average efficiency measured according to national average in age". In fact the term "Virtuoso" is so vague that it almost doesn't mean anything at all even in professional musical circles, - other that "yo this dude good yo" that is, people use it so liberally that it may mean anything from "good" to "godly gifted"(Which in 99,9999% 0f all cases just means started at age 3). Now: to adress the point; "do you need to know how your instrument works in order to become a really good musician": Yes. You do. End of.. The more you already know, the more you can learn. This being said 75% of what you learn on any given instrument should consist of practice, not theory, about 15% correction with a >>>(((I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH: PROFESSIONAL!!!)))

I am not really commenting on you at all good sir, i don't have any critique of you that i'd dare to claim valid enough to put to the internets eternal archives, and in fact some of your video's have helped me out quite alot even though not all may be enitirely accurate anatomically, they are most definitely very functional! Your approach is functional, non-damaging and efficient and that's what counts the way i percieve it. ;) - I only comment on the conversation between Tristan Paredes and Edwin Myers and some other folks because it is the first comment that shows up in the feed when i found this video.. And i personally believe that this - in my opinion quite strange - idea of one not necesarrily needing to know one's instrument in order to be proficient at it to do more harm than good.. So i try to "fight" it when i see it, i figured my comment would be seen by more people if i just left it as a stand alone comment, so that's why it's here and not in the thread. :) Heheh, b'cause, y'kno, it seemed a little bit like overkill to make a response to your video in order to address a single top comment. xD Oh and thanks for the response. :)

@@Ceenth Singing is mostly about feeling and figuring out your own system or vocal box. There were and are a lot of great singers who can't teach. Also voice critics who know every last bit of information on the voice, still can't sing great.
@Ceenth
@Ceenth 3 года назад
@@vegeta1885 No. Singing well is mostly about technique and concrete muscular and functional development through years of practice, not "feeling" the music, sorry, in fact feeling a piece is almost never something that's directly discussed when working with a piece of music, the character of the piece is discussed and the concrete lyrics and how to portray them, but almost never the "feeling", I and many others from my study have actually often been told to "feel less" when singing because nine times out of ten "feeling" a piece just means singing out of pitch or a faltering of formant or vocal clarity because of a lapse in technique. There really is no such thing as "figuring out one's own technique", there's the right way to do it and there's all the wrong ones, the fact that a given singer will have a choice between different sub-fach or even in some cases overall voice-categorisation doesn't mean the technique used to develop the specifics of that sound-ideal change, one's anatomy is fundamentally the same across our species even though the technique is used to develop different acoustic ideals for different roles and circumstances. By figuring out ones voice box i assume you mean estimated fach, or do you rather talk to the point of concrete anatomy? 🤔🤔🤔 - I believe i somewhat answered both points above but if i can come to understand what you mean i might address it a little more poignantly? :) True, there are many singers who can't teach, and we should keep in mind when discussing this that musical and didactical skills are different beasts, that being said; I will somewhat hesitate to call any singer that can't teach "great". - That's basically because if one can't formulate what one does then one cannot proberly address technical inefficiencies either, and that will eventually catch up to them even if an unbalanced technique currently sounds great on their instrument. This is not to speak ill against any singer in particular, it's just a matter of fact that I've never met nor heard of a truly great singer who cannot verbalize their proficiency to a point where they could theoretically teach it, neither can I imagine how that would work in practice. 🤔 Even though as mentioned didactical and musical skills are different beasts indeed. About the voice critics... Erhmm. Heh. 😅 Yea..... Erhmm. How do I put this... Some, if not "most" voice critics just don't really know what they're talking about, even though they may know the anatomy very well they often fail to take the specificities of a given singer into consideration... It's erhm. It's not to sound like a d*ck but thing is that there are details to certain fach ideals that isn't obvious even to a very expertly developed ear without having the technical ability to try out and differentiate the sounds, how does one for example differentiate a high countertenors upper extension from a young legierro tenor In trainings upper extreme range extension when both sing in fortissimo? - normally the formal answer would be something like "you can hear it in the formant" but that ain't really true either because a truly well supported falsetto can fairly easily sound more rounded and rich than a tenors catwails the first few years. :P To play a bit of devil's advocate in favor of the vocal critics though; One should realise that a vocal critics job only very rarely is to give critique directly to a singer, singers got coaches and other singers for that, vocal critics job more often than not is to communicate to "the ley-man" from an expert-listeners perspective why a given singer/performance is noteworthy or isn't and therefore why it's worth their time and money, strictly speaking they don't have to be great vocal technical geniuses at all, they have to be great at communicating musical experiences, which they often are. :)

Real professional singers should be able to hit the high C5 with their chest voice or even mix , the real thing is to be comfortable while your singing them all right . You talk about yelling but yelling is not singing bro . Note that high notes does not develop using yelling . It would cause you a habit in the future to sing every high notes in a yelling style . So i think this guy's not so professional .
