Thank you so much!!! Im a single mama redoing her daughters room and the one wall is a mess! I think I will be able to mud it now with more confidence!! I really appriciate it!!
I just bought a new home...well a home built in 1979 but new to me. I discovered after removing the wallpaper that the walls were NEVER painted, simply drywalled and the builder put fabric wallpaper over the drywall. It's been an absolute nightmare removing the fabric wallpaper and my patience has wore thin so unfortunately I have put alot of gouges in the drywall with the instrument I'm using to remove it and now have have the walls mudded. I was in tears thinking I was going to have to pay an arm and a leg for someone to come finish preparing this living room wall for painting. I got on RU-vid and saw your video, thank you, thank you and thanks again. Your video was clear, concise and understandable. I now feel quite confident that I can finish my project without having to hire someone to finish it. I am a very thankful new subscriber...
Thanks very much. You took some of the mystery out of skim coating. I especially liked your advice about knowing when to leave it alone. I guess that takes experience (which you have but I don't yet.) I'm working on it - thanks to your video.
Ive watched tonnes of. Vids on this subjuct and YOURS is the most basic and clear giving me the most confidence ! To fix my f'd up old tennessee farm property thanks for practical instruction.
Good stuff, thank you!I like the straightforward unpretentious narrative. I especially like the trash corner of your pan! Maybe you could do a video on pan techniques and tips...
My little cabin was put together two years ago and the dry wall is the worse I've ever seen. Lot's of uneven especially in the ceiling. It's horrific and have no idea how to fix it. I'm going to attempt the walls myself due to running out of money to hire it and found your videos hoping to help me do it but have no idea what to do with the worst ceiling I've ever seen. Maybe a video of something like that? Where the dry wall but cut and nailed up with some seams lower than others?
Good info. Gonna replay for the soundtrack and lagging audio. Quite cool watching your arm pump into the air the instant I hear the knife scrape the pan.
Clean work and excellent vid bro! Do you have a video showing how to skim coat full walls? I have a few walls with a mixture of plaster & drywall that are in bad shape, and I'd like to skim coat the whole wall.
Hey JP! a couple easier solutions may be to install 1/4 drywall over the whole wall, or to skim coat the wall by hand and texture with a sponge or brush....both of these i would prefer over skimming and sanding the whole thing :/ i hope this helps!
@@homemend many thanks for the response/helpful tip Dustin! I was hoping to avoid hanging new drywall on all walls, but it sounds like that's going to be the quickest method to the nicest possible finish. Looking forward to more excellent content bud!
hi sassy! noot specifically but here is a video where i installed a new sink, faucet and trap...i hope this helps! ru-vid.com?o=U&video_id=OxC67sd5zmw&ar=1566485077076
awesome...thanks for the vid and have been waiting for awhile to learn! btw, if possible, could you do a pt.2 with orange peel textured walls? that's my biggest struggle, as i can never seem to find the right stuff to use. lastly, one more idea...fixing minor settling cracks in concrete, whether a driveway or patio.
JR!! will definitely get these on the list... the orange peel especially...home depot has an orange texture spray, ( make sure it says orange peel on it) you usually can see patches unless you feather out a good ways....its always trial and error :(
I tried skimcoating a textured wall for a smooth finish, after failing to get the look I wanted after a few attempts, I just took out all the existing drywall I tried coating and redid the drywall completely. Not sure if that's what you were trying to do but sometimes it's just easier to start from scratch. Lol
Great video! The walls in our 1990 house are so trashed and dinged up, we need to do this. Do you have a part II video where you sand (I’m guessing it would need sanding?) and paint? So often, I try techniques I see in videos, and I just can’t get it to look very good 🙁
hey joel...this was premixed. i just used a mixer to make it smoother..... add water as needed. I like the powdered mix yourself as well for making repairs fast...
I know this is two years old. What type of compound you are using to skim coat? DOD you have to thin it down some ? If you could answer that would be great help. Thanks
Hey CC. This is just the bucket of green top of that they are sold at the Home Depot. Joint wall compound. You can thin it down with water but you do not have to. I hope this helps :-)
Nice vid on technique and application. My question: The previous owner of my house had the ceiling textured, but it came out very poor, no pattern, and just roller marks where the mud was applied and a popcorn style pattern was attempted, but failed miserably. I’m wondering how to correct it without having to scrap off the ceiling, before spraying on mud or rolling it on and then just making it a plain, flat ceiling look. Any recommendations? Thanks.
hey terry!..many times this has come up in my life man and through all the options..the best bet is to hang 1/4 drywall over the ceiling..its tough to make a bad ceiling look good. new ceiling is the way to go....i hope this helps
Hey rob! ....awe man... you must have one..lol actually my 5 year old daughter, then 4, gave it to me as a friendship bracelet..i told her i would wear it always... thanks so much fo watching and welcome!
Ok so my question may be lame however I am a first timer and still confused. After the steps you took in this video, what are the proper steps to repaint properly? Sand, prime and paint? Please help!
Hey Amy. Good question. After you get the first coat on and dried you can usually tell if it will need a second coat or even a third coat, then Sand and paint to match. Painting the entire wall yields better results than spot painting. Nowadays most paints have a primer in them and no additional primer is needed, just keep coating until it looks pretty. You got this
I have a half-bathroom that I painted badly. Now I am dreading having to mud it. It would be a difficult space to work in, would take a lot of time, and mean breathing in some nasty dust. In some cases, is it possible/sufficient to sand the wall and re-paint? Or does sanding a previously painted wall just risk damaging the drywall paper? Thanks!
hey rt...its tough to sand a painted wall...a light skim over is probably the way to go....light skim = light sand....as many times as needed until youre happy with it...little by little is effective ..i hope this helps!
Okay I seriously need your help. My partner and I were using drydex all purpose joint compound. We skim coated the drywall and waited over 24 hours between coats. The compound never fully "hardened" it turned white, but I can push my fingernail into it and or push my finger into it and it comes right off with pressure. Is joint compound supposed to dry "hard" not just to the touch but physically hard?? Why did mine not dry hard to resist a nail or finger push???
Hey OP! Believe it or not this is a common occurrence a couple things could’ve happened. More than likely you have put it on too thick, best applied are in thin coats, or if you’re trying to fill a large hole, anything larger than a quarter would probably need to be cut out and replaced with drywall, I’m guessing that you are trying to fill holes that are too large, unless you replace it a large repair will not hold a nail well. But yes it does dry solid. You may have better luck with a five minute joint compound, the premixed tends to take a long time to dry. I hope this helps! You got this
I want to skim coat the orange peel texture off my walls, but do I need to do any prep, sanding, or priming, etc, or can I just start skimming with joint compound/all purpose compound over the old paint? Will compound adhere to painted walls? Thank you!
Hi N0ST. Yes you can skim coat right over top of it, yes it will stick to paint, yes it will stick to everything but I would scrape down the higher sections to make it easy on yourself, you could also use a pump sprayer with warm water in it and wet it and scrape it down a bit, whatever works best for your situation
Skim coating with a 6" knife? Not typically what you see in the trades except from a painter...but I guess whatever works for you and you can sell to the customer is all that matters.
Hey Laura if you use a decent paint, nowadays they all come with primer in them and will suffice but yes you can skim coat over the gloss paint, it just requires sanding and clean up. You got this
Hi Miguel it depends on how course and textured the wall is. Sometimes it’s easier just to hang a new sheet of drywall over top of it. If you do need to scrape some stuff down you can wet it with a pump sprayer full of warm water and scrape down as much as you can and then skim coat. You got this do not be intimidated!
I did some mud and taping on my ceiling. I installed a ceiling light fixture that no I see all my imperfections. Some spots on the seams look hilly. How do I solve this ?
Hey LM. If it’s protruding you can scrape it down or just do another light skin to feather it out a little further. Illusion is everything here. You got this
The paint difference part made me want to throw my computer. Not because it was terrible but because I was looking for something like this for a week. My problem was I did body work for 5 years and after tearing down crown molding and wall paper the paint line that was there was thick as my wife booty. It turned in to me thinking it was bondo work. Way more than what I had to do.
Hey stalker. Which green top was the premixed but if you need to thin it down you can add water and use electric mixer. Or you can use the powdered mud. That’s what I do and usually mix it up in a pan. I hope this helps
You are not supposed to clean plaster in a kitchen sink, ever. You can ruin your drain pipes with plaster based materials. Rinse plaster based materials in a bucket of water instead, as the fines will clog your drain pipes unless you have a trap specifically designed for clays and plasters.
Hey Steve! I’ve never had a problem with it my friend. I just throw out all the extra and then wash the pan as long as you keep the water moving you should be good to go. Thanks for watching!
