I have been a server for over 5 years now and I can confirm this happens, more than it should. The worst experience was one time when someone told me off because their food was completely inedible, so I went to talk to boss to let them know there was a complaint with the food. When I got back they started screaming at me because I hadn't asked if they wanted boxes (as well as throwing horrible insults at me), in front of other paying customers. In the end they got their meal free, took home their leftovers, and my other customers gave me really good tips.

The “nobody has ever done my hair how I want it” thing makes me nervous but it’s also a challenge so I do my best to give them what they want. It doesn’t always work out but like 6 months ago I did get a client like that who LOVED her hair after I did it and now always prebooks and gives me a big hug and says “you just get me!” every time. Sometimes red flag clients turn out to be clients that really just haven’t found the right stylist yet. It’s usually not the case but I’m glad I found a good one lol

I did this recently with my new, amazing hairstylist! I truly have had very bad luck in the past, always getting stylists who obviously didn't care, or kept me under the dryer processing for way too long till my hair broke off, and the last time the girl literally didn't even run a brush or comb through my hair once before cutting (how is that even possible lol). .. but then, I found Lauren!! She cared! She brushed, combed, and sectioned! She checked on me and didn't process too long- she was amazing and I will always go back to her forever.

I agree! I had a middle aged woman do my hair a few times - first time she done it I had what for me was a drastic cut. My hair was down to my bum, I had her cut it to above bra strap length. When she left, my hair looked a mess! The cut was even, yes, but it was so blocky at the ends, because she hadn’t layered it like I had asked at all. I ave anxiety, and don’t want confrontation, so when she asked if I liked it and if I wanted to book another appointment, I said yes...and I ended up having her dye my hair red. I loved it when it was red, until my boyfriend and ?I went to the supermarket and he told me how patchy the back was, like she literally had missed entire strips. We bought some box dye and done it ourselves, and he then messaged her for me to cancel the appointment I had booked again. A colleague of mine at work recommended her hairdresser to me, a young lady only a year or so older than me (I was about 20 when I first went to her)...I messaged her, and I was so nervous about going to her when she quoted me a price of almost half what the other lady had been charging me, but went anyway. While she was doing my hair, I asked her about the prices, and she mentioned because it’s an at home salon, she has very low overheads so she’s able to lower her prices. This lady is AMAZING. I wouldn’t have anyone else touch my hair after finding her. My hair is now back to bum length, I’ve told her she should charge me extra for the extra hair dye in my hair because it’s so long and she won’t. This lady now does my waxes and eyebrows as well haha, but she does such a good job.

This happened to me too! Granted, I went to Great Clips and that was my first mistake. However I told her I wanted long whispy layers and to keep as much length in the process. She cut inches off and I was completely uneven all around and it just look BAD. I have since had 2 younger stylist cut my hair and my hair is FINALLY back to normal and even. I would go to a you get stylist over an older one especially because of the evolution of hair and someone younger and more fresh out of school I would trust way more.

"There's nothing I can do about your orange hair" bro what, yes there is lmao. If it's a deep orange, they legit just have to schedule you for another bleach session, maybe 2. Then tone it. It's literally just hair science and for cosmetologists, it's basic hair science lol. Girl, I can't believe they did you dirty like that, ugh. But it's best to be ugly orange than fried. Because at least another stylist can finish the job and get you platinum.

I have similar length hair and the last time I went to a stylist I walked in with my hair down and asked for a trim and they gave a price range of $15-25 or something (the cheap on campus salon), wail looking at my hair. So I assumed that range was for my hair and based on how complex the cut was. All I wanted was the last ~1/2” trimmed off, no shaping no product no nothing, took maybe 15 min. Nope price based on length of hair, so I got charged the max. I get charging more for services that take more time/product, but for the exact same service to have such a wide disparity in price based on something that affects neither time nor materials felt really dishonest.

@@juniperraven1386That’s not true. If you’re getting it shampooed and dry that can be at least 45 minutes for the blow out! I had a perfect hair stylist in NY. When I moved to Boston, I had to go through literally 10 stylists to find the one who could tackle my thick hair. I would always tell each one that I hadn’t found the right person yet and would always telll them that my hair is really thick and ask if they could handle it. They always said yes and then my hair would never look like the photo of MYSELF that I brought in. I remember a stylist telling me once that I was looking for a discount when I told her I wasn’t happy with my hair. She was super rude and when I got up to leave, even her manager agreed that the cut wasn’t right. They ended up giving me credit for another hair cut but I never went back. But honestly, I have to be the proactive client because I have soooo much hair and it’s a dark brown and I like blonde so I like highlights. I’ve had someone spend one whole day on my hair and it ends up super brassy or yellow yellow not even yellow blonde. I think it’s probably just my hair that’s the problem, but no one ever seems to know how to do it 😪 at this point I’ve been growing it out for 3 years because I want virgin hair so I can try it all again and hopefully find the right person this time. #Prayformyhair

I have to tell you I'm 35 years old and have actually gotten my hair done professionally maybe a handful of times and never liked it not once but the last stylist I want to was very thorough took the time to really listen to me explain my hair type and what was doable and what wasn't. As you said a lot of people don't understand their hair type and think that they can pull off any cut any style and it will look exactly the same on them as it does in a photograph. And in my experience most stylist will not tell you that. I think perhaps they are afraid that if they tell them that you can't do exactly what they want the client will leave without getting any service and then they lost money. But if you end up with an unhappy client who refuses to pay now you haven't only lost money you've also lost time and product. that's why what you should do is when a client comes in and they do have something that cannot be done you show them things that you think are similar that could be done to their hair or styles you think are better suited for them. That's what this stylist did and I left happy and even took the time to write her a good review.

Agreed! But clients have to be open to that feedback. Sometimes they just refuse to understand and won't even consider other options because it isn't exactly the same as the photo they brought in. I'm glad you listened to the stylist's recommendations and trusted her professional opinion!

That's why there called crazy clients normal people would get that. If you warn them and they still insist on doing whatever they're asking for I'd just add in as I said this is not going to look the same as the photo in your hair so I'll do the service but if you dont like it after I'm done no refund. Now you have covered yourself and if they hear no refund than maybe they'll reconsider.

I was one of these clients once upon a time 😂 my issue was I kept bringing in pictures of women who had like 3 times the amount of hair I have. My hair dresser is way too nice and would try her best and finally one day she said, "you don't have enough hair for that." And I finally caught on. Was super embarrassed lol. I have basically baby hair all over my head.

There have been a few different styled pixies I've wanted in the past, and my stylist told me my hair was not the right texture. Cool - I fully trust my stylist. She's the professional. She loves cutting my pixie and she says I'm very easy to please. All I want her to know is to keep my pixie soft and feminine and ... she works her magic

I moved to a new state and was trying to find a good fit for me in a stylist. First salon I liked her, but she didn’t cut my pixie right - I tried her twice. Second salon I loved and my stylist did fantastic color on me, but was very hesitant to cut my pixie as short as I like. I stayed with her for over a year before looking again. I finally found a stylist who cuts my pixie perfectly and is a fantastic colorist as well. She’s young, positive and I vibe with her personality which helps so much when communicating what is possible and what isn’t with my hair. Cost is immaterial to me when the stylist is a perfect fit.

What pisses me off....at least with my last hair salon visit NIGHTMARE...is stylists and owners that don’t take any responsibility when THEY messed up. I worked at a top 100 spa in North America as the assistant director. We offered everything! Even when a client complained THEY were (almost...there were a few exceptions) always compensated SOMEHOW! Most just want you to listen and empathize. Even when they are being ridiculous you gotta put on you’re “work face and voice” and just listen and never come across as confrontational! Because I was the person who popped up to the “I wanna speak to a manager” person....I learned a lot! I unfortunately am no longer able to work because I’m disabled. I went to a “high end” salon 1 1/2 yrs ago and I COULD NOT BELIEVE how unprofessional the owner of this salon was....I lost it. Good customer service is clearly a thing of the past!!

Ever since I was a child I have been to countless hairdressers, and at the end I would try to keep a straight face to not to hurt the hairdresser's feelings but I would cry all the way home and probably for weeks after! One of my good friends is a hairdresser and I never went to her even though she told me she was good and I wouldn't be disappointed just because I was so scared of what she would do to my hair! So after being friends with her for 8 years, I decided to ask her to do my hair. That was 5 years ago and ever since I am the happiest, most satisfied customer of hers ever! I actually cried of happiness the first time she did my hair! I think now that my hair must be a problematic one and she is just the best in the world to make great hairstyles for me! After watching this I'm gonna text her now for the millionth of time to thank her for it! ❤️

Okay but as a client, I have had most hair stylists in the past 10 years argue with me about my hair and it's incredibly frustrating. It's my hair. I have lived with it my whole live, been through all 4 seven year changes, grown it myself. I know how it behaves. I know my haircare routine, I know what styles it holds, I know how it falls I know the one little piece that never does what it's supposed to, I know how it behaves when its short vs long, I know the porosity and how its changed over time. I know how thick it is and I know how coarse it is. I know my hair. Having someone who has touched it for .2 seconds argue with me about my cut is so insulting.
@leahpettit4477
@leahpettit4477 4 года назад
Same. I get it, but at the same time, if you have a type of hair that is OFTEN cut wrong, or that behaves differently than other types, being insistent about what you KNOW is necessary. I have straight, fine, thick hair, and I have only ever met one stylist that doesn't cut it like it is "thin". When you cut it like it's "thin", you cut SO MUCH HAIR in each layer that it looks like a crappy shag. I cut my hair myself now, and get it shaped about once a year by the same stylist that can actually cut it. I have had it ruined by too many people who are "professionals" who wont' listen when I tell them that fine/thin is not the same as fine/thick.

@@leahpettit4477 I have wavy thick coarse hair and people either cut it like it's curly or like it's thin/fine and it looks awful like that. Sometimes it’s not going to come out exactly like the picture sometimes your hairs not going to grab to colour like the hair dresser wanted or expected it to. But if you have a good hairdresser they work with that in future. I also can’t stand when people try to haggle with pricing I work in an industry where I charge for a service it’s so offensive to try discredit someone’s work because you can’t afford the quality. I still tell my stylists (I rarely go to a salon so when I do go, Shane salon, it’s always someone new) about my horror experience.....30 years ago! Lol Spiral perms were THE hairstyle to get in the 80s. I begged for one from my mom who was worried because I had hair to my butt that never had been touched short of trims and one pixie cut when I was younger (asked for that one too at 7 lol). But she agreed and took me in. I assumed I’d lose maybe 4-6 inches of length, but that would still be to my mid back so I was okay with that. She gave me a little orphan Annie, complete globe on my head perm! I cried and washed my hair for days. She cut it all the way to my shoulders before wrapping which I didn’t even realize because I was too busy reading a magazine. Since there were layers being cut, I thought nothing of the front pieces. But I never distrusted other stylists or questioned them because of that experience, just probably made everyone nervous when I’d tell them that story as they were cutting my hair lol

One time I went to a new person wanting what she saw as a drastic change. She first asked if I had any majors changes in my life, like a breakup or a pregnancy. I said "no" and also assured her I had my hair much shorter before. She ended up doing the best haircut I have ever had. Unfortunately, it was in a town I don't live in, and I have not found anyone who can reproduce what she did. A couple girls have gotten close. I am terrible at making appointments, so I don't have a go-to person; I use the walk up places. I now look through the window to see if the stylists I have liked are there and avoid if the ones I didn't like so much are working. Fortunately, my hair grows very fast so even if it turns out bad, it won't take long for mine to grow out. My last haircut was great. I should do better about asking and keeping their names.

I can totally get it from both sides. The problem is actually the salons that claim to be professional yet are late to your appointment or make you wait 20 min. Yes hair has gotten ungodly expensive these days and we also live in a world that sets the bar quite high for women especially for women with even slightly ethnic hair. Hair is a luxury that almost caters to celebrity/ elite levels of income. If I’m paying $350 for an all over color and a cut then I expect my stylist to be the upmost of professional. I don’t appreciate a stylist who is short when consulting, has an assumptive attitude immediately when you bring up what to expect price range, and I definitely do not appreciate a stylist who charges based on their level of expertise but then has 2 other people working on you too. Too many times I’ve gone into an elite salon expecting to get what I pay for but then walk out with a dripping wet head or having been made to feel as tho me wanting a thorough consultation is an inconvenience or makes me a potential problematic client. I think the problem resides in people having unrealistic expectations coupled with stylist having big egos, bad communication skills and just not being transparent enough. If we could all take the personal out of it and communicate better, then clients will have a better understanding of what goes into making the prices the way they are and the stylist can understand from the clients point of view why consistent professionalism is one of the most important factors in gaining your clients trust. Compassion from both sides is the only way. Stylist get offended because they take questions personal as if the client is trying to discredit or doubt their ability. But you have to remember, the client is the one who is paying a lot and who is going to be wearing the look whether they like it or not.

Like maybe you know how you're supposed to do it but you're not good at it yet..... I don't feel like I'm getting the practice I need in school for a lot of things. I don't get very many clients and the ones I do get are just asking for roller sets. Like ok but I need to do more. I know I can get a manikin for home and practice but when people do get in front of me at some point and want it done outside of school, I'm nervous that they will want things I haven't practiced yet and don't know enough about it. I keep looking for classes outside of school but I'm struggling finding any even within couple hours from here. I'm only at 400 hours right now so I can't intern or work anywhere yet. Thank you! Whenever I'm trying out a new technique, I have one of my friends come in as a model so I can practice on a real person without the fear of messing up on a "real" client. But I have had a few times where someone wanted a haircut that I wasn't feeling 100% confident with, so I just asked my boss to help me out and make sure I was doing it correctly. It can be a little bit embarrassing to stop and ask for help, especially because you don't want your client to think you don't know what you're doing. But I'm always honest about what my strengths and weaknesses are. I feel like you're never going to get better at something if you don't force yourself to do it, but you also don't want to completely butcher your clients' hair, so just ask for help! And once you're working in a salon, let your boss know what things you feel like you need more practice with so they'll know when they need to step in to help! Look up Free Salon Education - he does TONS of step-by-step videos from color to cuts to styling and it's all 100% free.

It physically hurt me one time to tell the girl I didn't like it when the hair is straightened with the big circle brush and it all flips inward (not a professional you can tell lol) and I asked her to just put waves in it with the flat iron. It all worked out but I didn't want to be "a pain".

Ugh, yes I've seen people doing my hair get visibly startled because they knew they fucked up something, and then they act like it looks wonderful afterward.

If you always get bad stylists, maybe you're just going to chain salons and should probably stop lol. I always had bad stylists because my mom only ever took me to Great Clips and Smart Style. They don't understand what I ask for, and some of them just.. aren't good at cutting hair. Like, I asked for layers at SS and they like.. didn't texturize or blend it at all. So it was like stacks of hair and just.. so noticeable and bad. When I lived elsewhere, I found a hair salon that wasn't part of a company, and they had the first stylists that EVER gave me a good haircut. After we moved away, I took a 1 hr trip to get my hair done again and unfortunately, they were closed. Got my haircut at a chain salon ONCE after moving, then remembered an old family friend has her own salon and have been seeing her for my hair ever since. I'm actually planning to intern with her and HOPEFULLY work for her when I graduate. I do plan to move about an hour south again, but I''d still make to drive for her and that includes if I were to work for her. Her salon has the exact environment I want to work in and I already know her and get along with her. I also didn't know at first that she was charging me at a discounted rate for knowing me my whole life. Since I'm in school for Cos, I asked her about how she determines her prices because they're pretty low and she's good at what she does. She told me "Well, I give you a discount. But my normal prices are what they are because of factors like location." I was just super surprised that she gave me a discount. I never asked for one, never joked about it. I appreciate it, but discount or not, she'd still be getting 25% tips lol.

At my salon we use this app called sign now. It’s for when we do consultations. We write everything down that we disgusted and how much everything is gonna be then we make them sign it so at the end if they try to say anything we can refer back to the consultation form that they signed.

Went to stylist of 30yrs. Her hair looked like crap. Did highlites. They were stripey, unnatural. Had 3 big lines 1/2" white stripes on head. Had to be fixed. 3rd stylist was the charm. 1st stylist said she did balyage. She did hilites in semiperm. It washed out. 3rd stylist, no problems. Its beautiful now and in great condit.

I remember going to a hairstylist and the first thing he said, I should just shave your hair, it's pretty bad! Curly hair is always a challenge I am scared of hairstylists.

A lot of this is also applicable to tailoring, haha. Currently in training, and at an internship, and good lord my first made to measure customer has been.. a lot to deal with :') ALL of the 'I used to sew so let me tell you how this should be done' attitude.

I work in hotels and people do the complaining for free stuff with us too and it's the same every time. Checks in immediately complains and takes a bad attitude. After a few hours of being in the room when I can no longer just move them because I can't clean that room to resell it, they come down and complain about something small or that has no proof like it is the biggest deal in the world. They find a few other things to be upset about and in the morning of check out, speak to a manager about what a terrible stay it was. Most single star reviews of the hotels I've worked at have been people who tried and failed to get a free room

I just finished cosmetology school and since I started going to school I’ve been doing one of my sisters hair she keeps insisting on me to do highlights on her without using bleach, mind you her hair is dark she’s like at a level 2. I also have a niece that is never satisfied with any service that she gets and what makes it worse is that she doesn’t even explain what she wants she just whines and complains that she doesn’t like it. her mom has to speak for her but not even her mom understands her (my niece is 20)

My Mom is never satisfied. 😂 She is always complaining about prices at restaurants and fast food. If she orders something and I order a burger and I ask for cheese, she will say it's extra. I'll give her the change. I rarely go out to eat with her because she can embarrass me.

I would just suggest to know exactly what they want and tell the client I cannot do this in one session, quote the price and stick to it. That way, if the stylist still doesn't get the hair right, it may be the stylist...not the client. Not Always though!!

I rent wedding decorations, I had a lady about 2 years ask me for quote I gave her the prices for the specific items she was looking to rent told “that’s too much ill give $$.” I told her “ma’ am these are my set prices I can’t rent them at that price. I understand we all have a budget to stick to and that I might not be the best choice for her. I normally offer a discount if I get a client who rents from and they go over their budget with a bit and start taking things off like once I had a bride go over by like $55 she was very clear she didn’t want to go over so I just waved the $55 cuz she was willing to pay full price not complain she saw she was over she started taking an item she wanted off to not be over I told her not worry about it. But this other lady decided she would name the price and it was so low I couldn’t do it, she offered to pay a 1/4 of what my regular price is. Its crazy!

Had a client not understand what she was asking for and I tried asking what I thought was all the questions to get her nail shape down she just snatched her hand away and asked me if I even knew what I was doing. Then as soon as my boss walked by she had him do the service.

I didn’t realize the whole drastic change could be a potential red flag! I remember how when I was younger, I wouldn’t cut my hair for over 1-2 years so it got super long. When I realized how long it got, I finally went to get it chopped and my stylist kinda panicked asking if I was sure and why such a drastic change. I was so oblivious 😂

What is wrong with people? I know what I’m paying for... the chemicals to color my hair and the labor. There is a lot of science involved and cutting hair is an art. I always tip 20 percent or more. Common sense. And... prices are set. This isn’t a bazaar in the Middle East. 🤦‍♀️

I'm definitely a salon hopper, although my most recent haircut was so good that I'll be going back to the same stylist! But I live in a huge city and like to try out different salons, so I don't really commit unless I'm really blown away. I could definitely see the stylist was nervous though when I asked him to chop off about a foot of hair though, I imagine he's gotten a lot of the impulsive clients like you described in #2!

Haha I used to be the same way. I bounced around a lot and half the time I was like, "Hmmm, what do you want to do?" That stresses a lot of hairdressers out, but it's really fun when they're very creative and they get to do something out of the ordinary. Usually, they calm down after I show them pictures of my old haircuts (rainbow mohawk, red hair, brown hair, white hair, pixie) because they know I'm not kidding when I tell them not to worry too much about if I will like it since hair grows back.
