Unicorns do not exist...Or do they? This time-capsule 1976 Ferrari 308 'Vetroresina' with only 7,486 original miles sure makes a strong case for the latter.
For those who love to geek out on original cars as much as we do, you will enjoy this film. Join LBI Limited’s, Adolfo Massari, as he examines the fine preservation hallmarks of this particular example while providing some tips on how to distinguish an original fiberglass-bodied 308 from the common steel-bodied cars.
This example is original paint, original interior, matching-numbers and low-mileage, with Ferrari Classiche Certification. Even the original tools, manuals, bill of sale, and jack are still in the original cardboard delivery box from 1976!
Ferrari produced 808 of these early 'Vetroresina' examples, as the first Ferrari production car with a Fiberglass body. In late 1976, Ferrari changed production to steel-bodied cars after criticism stemming from the public's negative perception of Ferrari using cheap or seemingly substandard material for their 308 bodies which only cemented their fate as the "holy grail" of Ferrari 308s.

Lovely car, 308 GTB is my favourite second to the 246 Dino, but also sad to see a cocooned car that has barely been on the road. These are indeed drivers’ cars!

We agree! Certainly, wish it was driven more but it is also nice to be able to examine a time-capsule original. Hopefully the next owner puts some more mileage on the car!

Great video. And very interesting. I like all of the details of the car. I had just watched a video right before yours about the 308. The man driving it talked about the earlier models having fiberglass body's. Then to watch your video, and there you are with a fiberglass 308. He said the fiberglass models are worth twice as much as the later models. 200.000 - 100.000. You are very lucky. That car is obviously especially rare. Congratulations. Jeff

Sounds like a perfect playlist! Yes indeed they are worth considerably more than the regular Steel-bodied 308 GTB. Take a look at all the photos on our website! - lbilimited.com/offerings/1976-ferrari-308-gtb-vetroresina/

I resprayed one of these back in around 1984 and most of it was made of fiberglass but the front bonnet or hood as you call it was made of aluminium but the rear boot engine door was made of steel ? I remember it having a telephone back then with an female operator on the other end of the phone.

The fibreglass had the reverse lights in the rear bumper. Not the turn signals.
@LBILimited

Difference is US vs Euro Spec. US-Spec Fiberglass Cars, as seen here, had the reverse light integrated into the amber turn signal lights. Euro-Spec examples had the reverse lights in the rear bumper.

Hello, I thought that the rear panel at the number plate (license plate) was different on the fibreglass cars. If it had a recess around the number plate as on your car it was a steel car and if it was flat it was a fibreglass car. I used to remember it as the two ‘F’s, flat = fibreglass. Or could the American market cars be different?
@LBILimited
@LBILimited 3 года назад
Correct! It is different on the US Spec cars as you indicated.

There was a time, these were worth LESS than a steel-bodied 308. Nobody wanted them.
@LBILimited

Yes amazing right!? That seems to be a common trend for cars that were once unloved at first, and then highly coveted.

Sorry adolfo, crazing on a fibre glass body is NOT an indication of original paint, its simply a result of impact damage. Also the fibreglass is of very high quailty and it takes a substancial impact to create damage hence if the car does actually have 7k miles, its not been very well looked after. Finally, vetroresina means glass resin.... not fibreglass.!

Thank you for your comment! Paint checking may have been a strong word choice. Rather, it has very fine, superficial surface crazing that is only viewable under specific lighting consistent with the way single-stage lacquer paint can age. During this time period, Ferrari used Glidden Salchi Eurolac. After the body was prepped, they applied a yellow-colored polyester spray filler to even out the minute imperfections in the body then flash sprayed white primer then color. If you look closely, on our car, the underside of the front and rear valence along with the wheel wells, rockers, and other areas have minor blemishes to the surface coat showing this original yellow and white layering underneath....Original paint everywhere! You are absolutely correct in saying fiberglass does spider upon heavy impacts though that is not what has happened here or what the car exhibits. The problem with original lacquer of this time-period is that if the car isn't stored in a consistent temp and humidity-controlled area, temp fluctuations can cause very light surface crazing and aging as this car exhibits here. Furthermore, all of the panels are 100% consistent with no imperfections related to repainting nor are there any tape lines, overspray, discoloration, rough edges etc. This coupled with the fact that the original primer is underneath coatings are underneath, it is original.
