To boost your distance away from the transmitter, you could add a small, non-inverting op-amp circuit made of an op-amp and a few resistors and put it into the case, making the transmitter have a higher range.

Hey Kip, the original receiver design looks like it took 4 batteries but your reworked design only uses 2. In the original was it both parallel and series or how is it working with half the voltage?
