Great video, thanks! Would you the exact opposite to get it to stay up if one side snapped back a bit more than the opposite side? Also I have another straw hat that has become much more flimsy than before. Is there a stiffner that can be used in straw?
Exactly, yes, you would do the same in the opposite direction, probably with A LOT more time with the hat sitting upside down(or crown down, as I show in the video). As far as straw stiffener, there's not any that I've used that I've thought were effective enough to recommend, to be honest. In most cases, once a straw looses its' stiffness, the fibers in the straw itself are just thinning out and loosing their 'gauge' if that makes sense. It's hard to get that to recover, even with a stiffener. The stiffener that I use in "How to Steam and Save a Felt Hat' *might* help a little bit, but I think the amount you'd have to use on the straw would end up leaving a sticky residue on the outside of the hat itself. Straw is a different beast than felt, and much more delicate, I'm afraid.
So helpful! My beautiful paper Goorin Bros hat got wet and then wrinkled while traveling and the previously fully dome-shaped crown is full of dents. Might you have feedback about how to fix it?
