thegeekgroup.org/ - WARNING--LOUD NOISES. Sometimes autopsies can be vengeful. Chris takes apart a a smoke detector from Nest Labs that happened to wake him up at an ungodly hour for a not-fire reason. Watch along to learn how these particular detectors are built and how they sense danger. For people who love seeing where older technology is being taken in the modern day, it's a can't miss episode!

Some corrections: The "EAST" thing is the piezo horn. It gives the 85 decibel beep. The two vents above that are activity sensors that detect your wave. The light sensor is inside the button/ring. The thing that looked like a soldered battery and capacitor was the actual carbon monoxide sensor. The smoke sensor was what had the vents on the side.

I think the black cilinder with the hole on top is the actual buzzer for the alarm. The plastic speaker is probably just for the voice

The speaker you removed was for the voice and the " carbon monoxide " detector is actually the loud annoying buzzer/alarm

That battery thing.. isn't that a carbonmonoxide sensor? teared a CO detector down recently and had a battery like sensor... cool device!

will it still work, when the os driving it fails or crashes? Like some sort of failsafe , smoke detectors will happily work even while cooking by the fire its detecting. I imagine this would crash once the micr controller overheats.

THANK YOU!!! i was getting tired of seeing your cnc videos and wood turning videos. This right here is the good stuff! Also, we were promised a gas meter autopsy!

The black round thing with the hole in it is the buzzer. The little plastic speaker is for the voice and other sounds.

wouldn't it be better if you just get a monitored alarm with fire protection?

Great vid, do you think its possible to source the smoke detector sensor and diy replace it? Instead of buying a replacement unit for $120 every 7 years?
@tornuptom
@tornuptom 10 лет назад
hmmmm... I'm pretty sure that the black "battery/Cap" is a battery, as soon as you removed the shielding i said "a RTC battery!" As ***** mentioned in another comment, the round component with a hole in the middle looks like a piezo alarm buzzer, for producing the high pitch alarm tones.

Here's an interesting question. Would Deoxit destroy the sensor or just get the shmoo out that's making it screw up? I would have to assume there's something in there fouling it.

@TheBaddabeng

Youre right despite, the figaro "battery shaped" thing is the carbon monoxide electrochemical sensor. The thing you assumed to be the co detector is just the piezo alarm horn.

@ConradvanderMeer
@ConradvanderMeer 10 лет назад
Chris, You are wrong!! The 'battery shaped thing' is a CO sensor (yes I'm as surprises as you.) And the round part next to the Ultra Sonic sensors isn't a sensor, it is just a piezo buzzer, the speaker only does the speaking part, the loud noises come from the buzzer. more info can be found on: learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/nest-protect-teardown/sensor-scavenger-hunt Not telling you how to do things but maybe it is a good idea to just do your research before or when you are doing an equipment autopsy

Interesiting autopsie. I liked part at the end, although i kind of knew some of it. There was a book in college i read called the myths of inovation by scott burkun. I keep coming up with ideas, but absolutly no clue how to make them actally happen. I keep seeing these things online about solar roads, and the potintial. I thought we should find some way to harness that for other things too other than just the electric grid. Also computer stuff some of the stuff has been aroud for yrs, only seen minor changes in the technology. May work for average user, but some of stuff i could see improving would be neat for geeks, gamers, and anyone that likes some more advanced capabilitys of computers.

I couldn't watch this because of my tinnitus, even with the volume on really low the sound of the smoke alarm still hurts my ears.

Smoke detectors should be simple not all fancy with multiple colored leds and voice commands I understand sending alerts to your phone; a simple beep when the levels are low and even more beeps when something would be perfect. I am sure this product is going to work well as an alarm, I am just stating my opinion on this interesting product.

The big round Figaro TGS 5342 is a Carbon Monoxide detector. www.diltronic(dot)com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/TGS53421.pdf The round one with a hole in the middle is probably the doom speaker. The other speaker is for the speech. I've seen warning speakers before and they are often more compressed like that with a hole in the middle in other words discant. The other speaker are more middle register and can't produce thoose high pitched noise at that decibel.

12:47 That's the CO sensor. And 13:55 The bottom is the smoke sensor, and the circle with the hole in the middle is the Horn, which is what does that *BEEP BEEP BEEP* .

How is it that you have been taking apart so many electronic devices in your life and you don't know what a piezoelectric buzzer looks like?
@thewii552
@thewii552 10 лет назад
A quick google search revealed the TGS5342 that you thought was a battery detects carbon monoxide. Also, judging by my knowledge of electronics, I would say the plastic thing you thought was a carbon monoxide detector looks to be a buzzer of some sort.

These things have a 7 year lifespan apparently. For Gen 1 and for Gen 2 it’s 10 years for the carbon monoxide sensor.

I couldn't take it anymore. FFS: FRESNEL not frennel. The "CO2 sensor" is actually a piezoelectric disk buzzer that makes the "loud" noise. The speaker from earlier in the video is just that -- a speaker for the voice. The other "battery or capacitor" is actually the CO2 sensor.
@tsltyler
@tsltyler 10 лет назад
the thing you thought was the carbon monoxide detector, is actually the screaming speaker of doom. it is a peizo buzzer for the loud beeps. the speaker is just for the voice.

they should add something that you can disable a smoke detector for like 1 hour and 10 hours like when you get a smoke machine
@mattibboss

This sensor with glass is kind of infrared camera so if it sees that something is big and >500°C it knows there is problem It should be smart... And maybe open source and hardware... You can add sensors anywhere... They could create slaves and master that you plug into router and it shares information via some high frequency then you dont need wifi... Wifi modules and antennas are expencive... It should have temperature sensor inside and if it gets hot like >100°C then it should trigger any device in the house send emails to you your family your frends triger allarm on your phone app and more... You could create door lock with distance sensor fingerprint scanner and passcode so if you scan your finger then it dosent send you messege... If you enter pin it says witch passcode has entered.... Baterry powered but it should have nfc or some type of coil so if your beterrys are fone you can just tap your phone and send data and ppwer to lock it will charge it in capacitors then boost up and unlock the door Of course no thing like :1 evtra fingerprint or code - > cash.... You pay once and you have all inclusive... Thats my ideas

Its probably a poorly made Photoelectric detector with low false alarm immunity. It would react to steam from your shower.
