Jamie, you cannot even count on the bell notification as even though I have it selected I still do not get notified. Since I know when to expect a new video, I always check your channel to see if it has been posted. As for your shaft not being straight, it can come from the factory not being true as they will have a tolerance of + or - off of true. It might not be much but in time it causes wear on the bearing and vibration. Your talented machinist has most likely worked wonders for the shaft.

Max props are wonderful...and the new Max Prop Easy is an amazing improvement. Changing the forward and reverse pitch is so easy I do it simply snorkelling, two size allen keys and swapping different length hex bolts marked to the pitch takes only a few minutes in the water. Annual greasing in the water is a breeze too. PYI sent me pitch bolts from 12 to 28 degrees becaue we couldn't agree on the expected pitch with repowering. I started low and kept increasing pitch until getting a little black smoke at max rpms reached at max throttle. Best single mod (along with the dripless shaft seal) to any drivetrain for a sailboat. West side (Malaysian side) of Borneo seems like a good choice for your hideaway from typhoons and hauling out. You've shown us more of Borneo than seen in many cruiser's vlogs, thank you!

Hey Bruce, thanks for the great comment. Elsewhere I've mooted the idea of returning to a fixed prop but the new Maxprop you describe sounds interesting and a lot easier to use too. I am convinced our prop is not performing as expected and taking other comments on board it's possible our prop is mis-aligned due to hitting something under water.

It's all interesting stuff, and when you have people around you who know what they're doing armed with the right tools, it's fun too. Imagine having to deal with these issues in an emergency in a location with no resources though 😯

The trouble with working with Stainless Steel is that it has about 9% spring back, that is why it was bending so much for such a small amount of out of straightness. It’s possible that the shaft could have been bent with bad support of the boat when out of the water at some stage. Apparently a boat can flex quite a lot when poorly chocked. In future check the chocking so there is no stern sag. Perhaps use a string line from the keel and take a vertical measurement to the transoms tip once the shaft is in and turning freely before refloating, then some time for amusement see if you can do the same again when the boat is in the water. If you have to do that in more primitive situations shafts can be straightened with heat, but you really need to understand what you are doing to pull it off. Thank you Jackson for your skill.

We knew of a 60ft boat that had to jack up the back end for two months because it had sagged so much he couldn't reinstall his shaft. Prop misalignment could very well be the cause of our issues.

Jamie having just finished view your last two films, great work. I would, if I were you, consult with Oyster about your shaft strut ("p bracket"). I believe they will advise you to replace the entire strut assembly due to the high to very high probably of failure due to unseen, internal fracturing on the internal side of the strut and the greater degree failure with the wielding repair on the observable side. In addition, your insurance provided may invalidate or disallow any claim, if this component is involved in some shape-or-form.

Hi , if you could get yourself a nice little tool called a needle dial indicator with a magnetic mount you can place the little needle from this dial anywhere on the shaft and read off the degree of play in the shaft from the needle dial , it’s a toolmakers tool and you can get one for thirty dollars and it’s highly useful for measuring whether any shaft or bearing or pulley or anything that turns is out of alignment it’s quite useful for that particular job even if you only use it now and then .

Have your propeller blades been checked for being the same weight? An out of balance propeller could bend a shaft. Excellent segment. It was over all to quickly, an indication of good story telling..

Another great episode. I can't wait until our own haulout is finished and behind us. A few more weeks and we will be experiencing the glorious bottom sanding, cutlass bearing replacement, and figuring out why our prop is getting loose. We might have a new prop and/or driveshaft in our near future. A couple of boat bucks should set it all straight.

Have you considered putting a GoPro on a stick and recording the prop's performance while underway? WiFi doesn't work through water so you won't be able to see it in real time, but you could record a minute and watch it back.

I thought the variable pitch props were used on engines that are running at 1 speed only. The most fuel efficient speed for the engine. It's changing the pitch of the prop that changes boat speed. Complex system indeed but an incredibly effective fuel saver even when motoring.

@@followtheboat It would likely have a negative impact on how far Esper can go between fuelling stops when you need to motor instead of sail. It's a trade-off, easier to maintain as a functional part of Esper for a loss of motoring range.

Hmmm, and let's not forget we do a lot of motoring in SEAsia, but I'm not sure I understand how a feathering prop can be more efficient under motor. I thought their efficiency was when sailing, reducing drag.

@@followtheboat variable pitch, if you can set the pitch which most you can, gives maximum push at engine peak fuel economy rpm. A 1 speed engine where throttle control is actually pitch control. Need to crawl in a marina, the pitch is so slight you are barely moving, yet the engine is at it's perfect fuel economy rpm. Need to pull / push hard the pitch is adjusted for power, speed is yet a different pitch. Through all uses, the engine is purring at it's perfect fuel economy rpm. That is how they gain efficiency under power, the engine isn't ever wasting fuel with bad rpm rate.

Hey Guys, hearing about the new PSS seal causes me to remember my own installation. If I remember correctly a new seal can take some time to bed in and fragments can come loose between the steel and the rubber seals causing some ingress. Easily fixed when you know that, PSS have a video on this from memory. Bear it in mind that this may be the cause if you find some water in the bilge. The PSS is a really good product overall IMO

I’m really surprised sailors don’t do a shaft runout each haul out. Another thing that should be done is having your prop balanced as they do get out of balance from hitting debris like trees and nets.

Thanks for the video. I am sure you posted this with good intentions but this is not how you check a shaft truth / runout in the 21st century. Jackson was doing this by eye however good his eyes are? You need a DTI clock (dial test indicator) at the very least to measure the deflection so you know were to correct and by how much. Today lasers and laser alignment between shafts is more common. The method he used is what would be applied to slow running, less than 200 rpm, large equipment like mixer / agitators with shafts spanning 8+ meters in length. The shaft should of been checked between centres, that you had on the shaft on one end (shown in the video) so I am sure would of been on the other end as any good machine shop would of done when manufacturing. I am an engineering to trade so i know this is right / fact, not down to a mater of discussion. I would agree you don't need laser alignment as most couplings take up small alignment issues but you do need both shaft to be true. The method Jackson was using is what was done back in the 18th century I appreciate you are both sailors and you have to take the advice given by experts but on this occasion I have to say this is wrong, and more so you are posting a video that may mislead others. Google / check what i have said, love the chanel, you have given lots of good advice in the past and posted great content. Not out to attack you just want to let you know this is not right.👍🏻

@@followtheboat HI Jamie I live in Indonesia and half agree with you about things being as good as it gets in some places. But I checked how much a magnetic support dial gauge was here on Tokopedia. 225,000IDR and up a bit. Jackson has real talent but for the sake of $16 it could be done quicker and with less reliance on mark 1 eyeball! A yard like the one you're in, with some fair engineering equipment, like the press Jackson was using, should be able to afford a $16 dial gauge. Tokopedia is available in Malasia and Thailand as well it seems. The app is in English sort of, (after going to the very bottom of the log on page and finding the English button) but only on the computer version. You can get anything from Tokopedia, even Marmite! Like you, I have been to very remote areas here a lot, but still the yard you are at isn't that remote and they certainly can get deliveries. Love the videos hope it all comes together soon and you can get back in the water soon.

As an answer to the question in the title card: Yes. In matter of fact my "shaft" is bent, indeed. When I was a little child my parents noticed I had problems to aim my pee into the bowl. I went trough a surgery, which mostly fixed the problem, but my "shaft" is still a bit bent. Sorry .. bad humor .. but couldn't resist...
