10 years ago I started watching vagabond, Delos, etc. ive long since stopped watching other peoples travels (cept you guys occ. ; ). I now have my own beautiful boat and have no desire to you tube. After saying all that, I don't think anyone has influenced me to want to see the world and see the world by sailboat. Thas something inside. I want to escape the "look at me im special, MTV, social program". and simply live. P.S. I have truly enjoyed watching people building boats and working through life to get to where they want to be channels on you tube. CHEERS to you two, the intellect, humor and down to earth commentary. Jamie, id like to see some more pippin/locking and the mango again.

I'm very old and cruised for many years and I watch a lot of sailing channels and I haven't seen what you describe. If different customs in SE Asia include government shakedown by immigration or customs, incredibly complicated clearance procedures or exhorbitant vessel services these should be publicized.

I want to do the same and do want to do the You Tube thing.. but for me it will be for my family to watch and as a kind of family photo album... if other people want to watch too... then cool... but if no one ever watches except my adult kids and a few friends then so be it. I too stopped watching most sailing channels... I think Delos though, despite being one of the biggest, have stayed true... not like Vagabond and others who are now businesses.

MTV's "The Real World" was ground zero for this "look at me" landscape we are in today. I'm more into building channels like Acorn to Arabella, Salt & Tar (and the FTB refit for that matter) to the point where once it's done I move on. That's why the documentary style is important. I really don't care if I ever see another time-lapse go pro on a shopping cart grocery haul.

Great video, and it is definitely a pet peeve of mine that should be called out. I just hate seeing misinformation disseminated out there to people who are considering this lifestyle. Having met quite a few of these RU-vidrs in person over the years it is clear quickly who the genuine people are and those who just have their hand out looking for you to fund their lifestyle. Funny thing is the RU-vidr’s themselves will tell you exactly who the goofballs are since it’s a small community. Love your channel and thanks for being one of the genuine sailing couples out there helping people!

I was living in Thailand when the King died in 2016. I was blown away by both farang immigrants and tourists walking around shirtless, drunk, and being loud even on the day the King died. This behavior is discouraged on a normal day but when the whole country is in mourning and/or showing respect for their late king it's completely unacceptable. You really do not have to spend more than 10 minutes reading about Thailand to know that you are not shirtless, and they loved the previous king and his daughter so it was clearly not ignorance, it was arrogance.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
We were there at the same time and wore black ribbons to show we were mourning with the country. 'Farang' immigrants' really should know better, especially as disrespecting the monarchy is an imprisonable offence! Tourists are a whole other thing! I agree that it doesn't take much to find out such simple information, but some people are not interested and happily go around in their own bubble of arrogance (look at the tourists who stripped off at the top of Mt Kinabalu and were sent to prison). RU-vidrs have an obligation to be culturally aware and sensitive. Thanks for your comment. Liz

Agree. I am a Malaysian and a sailor, to be honest I found one of RR's videos very upsetting to watch. Not cross checking information and just going by word of mouth which can end up like Chinese whispers. The people in the comments section loved their rant and would probably end up believing every word. I felt so insulted. The sailing community is so small and close knit in Malaysia - everyone knows everyone here.
@followtheboat

RU-vidrs are influencers, whether we like it or not, and for viewers who have never travelled to these countries RU-vid video content will be their only experience of these locations. What compounds the situation is when, in the eyes of the viewer, the RU-vidrs themselves become bigger and more important than the country they are visiting. It's one thing to have a bad day, we all have them, but it's questionable when you don't consider the implications of said content.

I must agree with your entire podcast. I have recently unsubscribed to at least 6 channels due to many of the reasons you talked about. Including the excess swearing, too much "all about me/us" and not enough about the details of their travels as you two do. I watch primarily to learn, and secondarily to be entertained so when the departure into me first and I'm mad at the world attitudes crop up I turn it off. Keep up the good work both with your photography, and all your content is both informative and often inspiring.

And they were a good sailing channel. I am an experienced dingy racer but have little big boat experience and like to see details on actual sailing… you get that with Florence and used to get it with Ruby Rose. I am bored with people buying new catamarans… it’s their life but I will vote with my choice of what I watch. Would love to see someone buy a brand new Kraken… I bet they don’t have dirty water. I missed this one and it just popped up. You are correct we all must be respectful of one another and not push personal opinions in people's "faces". During the pandemic I started watching & enjoy how boats are repaired and maintained. Also, watching young people rebuilding an older home or boat. Even how to cross an ocean or walk in a new town and point out the history also points of interest. But channels who click bait their significant others is discusting, as is showing who can compete best of tattoos as Caribbean pirates. Additionally, those who pedal CCP products claiming they are made in Japan or USA without researching the donner manufacturer. Or even those who definitely can't afford new shiny gear and don't credit the donner. But most channels the authors are over 25 and know better but are too arrogant to care and over time viewers will realize those channels don't respect their viewers and will drop them.

Unfortunately, the issues that you are speaking of don't just pertain to "social influencers" visiting foreign ports by yacht. There has been a changing trend away from civility the world over. Not raising voices, not swearing and not gesticulating have always been the hallmarks of good diplomacy in any culture that I'm aware of, even in the West. Equally, so has consideration for other's privacy and other's sensitivities. And it doesn't hurt to focus on positives. Why do people fail to understand this? I sent my son out into the big wide world with basic instructions: Never explain and never complain and when you hear the words "make yourself welcome", it's an instruction, not an invitation. Just came back from Java and Bali. Overland trip not sailing, but loved it. Lots of things to see and do, courteous and friendly people, exotic, good food, service culture, value for money etc. Sure the population density is high, the traffic slow and there is a waste problem, but I have no idea why anyone would dislike it and, if they did, why they would be vocal about it. Moreover, it's fun learning a few words in the local language and adjusting your behaviour slightly to reflect cultural norms. When you do, the obvious appreciation of the locals is priceless. Most YT sailing channels are not sailors. They are grifters who found out that posting bikini pics on a boat gives them more views then just posting bikini pictures. They are always in the most amazing place on the planet or they had a horrible near death experience which is always a dramatization, because they aren't sailors, or simply just a straight up lie for the views. Making $100k - 500k+ a year, and still making videos about "sailing on a budget" and begging for money in every single video while being in the top 10 - 15% richest people in the world. It disgusts me.

You are 100% correct. There’s boats that are only used as video props. Behind the scenes there’s a paid captain and crew. The “sailors” are only actors. Just like Hollywood, don’t believe everything you see on social media or TV. Very prevalent in the Van Life, RV, Bushcraft and Camping channels.

Imagine for a moment you were discussing how people wrote the great adventure novels of a bygone era. I think that you are missing a teachable moment, for yourself, and for these mysterious officials who are grumbling in the background. When a RU-vidr posts something that is disingenuous or untrue, there is a handy comments section where the discussion can be had. For example, in a video that I made, I mistakenly said that a certain lift bridge, was no longer in service. Someone saw this and politely corrected my mistake in the comments. Lesson learned, and visible to anyone following the thread. Perhaps you can convince some of these behind the scenes folks willing to ban a particular Cruiser that they'll catch more flies with honey ;) tiny, stingless, bee honey.

Liz and Jamie didn't miss the point, which obviously grazed your head and bounced off. No need to name and shame the officials. It is their country. RU-vidrs and others must recognize they are visitors. They must conform to the social etiquette of the country they are visiting, not the other way around.

The comments section is a great way of setting the record straight. God knows how many times we've been corrected in the past, and we always appreciate it. It's probably a big ask for authorities to start commenting on RU-vid channels though. It'd be politically sensitive and I don't think they have the inclination to get involved in online debates. Some of my biggest OMG moments from entitled You Tube sailors... at the worst moments of covid sitting on their catamaran in the South Pacific bitching about how hard they had it... and then being American genuinely expecting the Australians to change their quarantine rules because they were at sea... he actually said with no irony... 'but we're Americans'. The other is one mentioned a few times on here... brand new boat in a beautiful part of SE Asia and all you can do is bitch about a broken ice machine. I thought I was watching satire.

Less than ten years ago I saw my first sailing vlog (Sailing Doodles) and i thought "What a wonderful Idea for a vlog!" until I realized what a lousy schmuck he is/was. Unsubscribed after six or seven episodes. Luckily, I found others, among them yours. Now I watch you and The Cruising Kiwis -- sailing and visiting with some boat maintenance thrown in for good measure. And, an infrequent sailing vlogger, the prose-rich Christian Williams on the details and joy of running a boat. You are the OGs of sailing! If you don’t like or don’t want to respect the culture and rules of a country, you can pass it by or also just stay home. There is nothing wrong with just getting an RV and exploring your own country if seeing what it’s like becoming part of another’s culture isn’t what you want. Foreign travel should change you and your perspective. If it doesn’t, you aren’t really traveling. IMHO. I have personally experienced backlash due to the bad behavior of my fellow countrymen who traveled to a place before me.

It's really nerve wracking to film in public places! Let alone asking others to be a part of it when our channel is so small. It feels like we're imposter youtubers lol, and we don't want to bother people. I'm hesitant to even mention having a channel to other cruisers for fear of judgement (until we know for sure they won't think less of us). I'm almost wondering why I'm so drawn to do it then, if filming publicly is so damn hard? Well, I honestly, passionately LOVE editing and one day when we're old, we'll get to relive it. And even if we had no subscribers, just making the videos for ourselves is also helping me (Lisa) with public speaking/posture/etc, something I've never thought about until being in the videos. Thanks for making this, its a very interesting discussion and we will try to remember that 'not filming' is not always respectful, and for those with a big following it would likely in fact be offensive. Maybe one day we'll get there :)

I think we also have to understand the general culture of those who would put themselves on camera. I feel it is generally going to be a self-aggrandizing endeavor so what we are seeing is their natural self-serving experiences. Those types don't care about assisting the people or places they go to. They want their adventure, their experience, without care of the impact. It is the American way TBH and unfortunately that disease has spread. So what you are saying is well and good but we are talking about personality dis-orders here not people who actually care about giving back and assisting the greater good of our sailing and cruising community. I won't comment on specifics, partly because my gripe is more of a general moan that covers a multitude of offenders. And, to be honest, this isn't just a sailing channel problem. Look at Logan Paul in Japan (he says, commenting on specifics). Paul is a shining example of everything that is wrong with the 'influencer' culture on RU-vid, a fact proved again with his more recent crypto scam. My point being that a doofus like Paul can still have massive influence over their viewers, irrespective of their behaviour or, in Paul's case, peddling misinformation and lies. If sailors follow suit by showing a similar lack of integrity or decorum in their videos, it could give all sailors a bad name, especially within some of the countries we sail that are culturally different to our own.

@paulwyand6204 We still support Delos (have done for years) because Brian is such a good sailor (and Kazza, of course) and they put us on to Patreon. Having a still on board in a Muslim country is probably better than falling down drunk on land! To be serious, most countries with a predominantly Muslim population are absolutely cool about alcohol, many even drink it themselves. The only 100% dry country we've sailed in is the Maldives where you cannot buy alcohol and certainly cannot take it ashore, but they get round that by declaring posh resort islands as 'deserted' because no locals live there so alcohol can be served. Alcohol really isn't an issue and does not offend people here, unless you get so drunk you start behaving badly. The only time we are careful about consuming anything is during Ramadan, when 99.9% of Muslims are fasting and don't need to see drunks swigging back the beer. Thanks for your comment. Liz 🙏

Well done for making this video, I'd like to add a few points. Firstly, I don't consider a number of 'sailing' RU-vidrs as yachtsmen or women. By that I don't mean they lack experience, but the RU-vid medium and sailing are just a means to an end, so I don't think they represent sailors as a breed. Secondly, travelling the world and getting to stay in other people's countries is a privalege, and should be treated a such, as Brits who have suffered brexit know only too well. It is each travellers responsibility to make themselves aware of local customs and expectations, it's part of what travelling is about. It literally broadens the mind. Also, I think it's fairly obvious that some channels simply follow the money - if a certain behaviour is rewarded, they repeat the behaviour regardless of what it says about them. Perhaps the best way to moderate behaviour is for visas to be withheld.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
Good points, Philip. We stopped chasing the RU-vid algorithm (ie the money) some time ago now. We only put out what WE want to. Some of our favourite episodes, normally the travel-related stuff, get the fewest views... and that no longer bothers us. We've gone back to our original motivations for creating content: to keep our family and friends updated of our progress, and we do this by trying to be as authentic as possible.

Stopped watching a few channels because they started expecting others to finance their dream (begging for money). I have no issue with the Patreon concept but don't agree with setting up a "go fun me" type of account to purchase a new vessel because your POS sailboat really is a POS.

You make a lot of fair points and I understand what you are trying to convey. I'll swim against some of your drift, if I may, but you won't like it. I, for one, want You Tubers' to tell it how they see it; how they feel it; how they experience it. I want them to make value judgements and I definitely don't want to see 'best not say that as they don't like it' broadcasting - do that, and everything becomes too vanilla (like BBC newscasts in the UK). So, it is NOT always about 'the facts' Lizzie, as it is practically impossible, in may cases, to establish them. You deal with what you experience, using your (culturally bound, for sure) judgments. As long as you are not being culturally imperialistic, and it is clear what your cultural and financial hinterland is, I don't see a lot of massive issues on what some peoplemare saying, nor in the waynthey are saying it. I have found many of the points about SE Asia, from the four or five different Channels I dip into and out of, useful in that it tells me (amongst other things, of course) that I'd never want to sail my boat there, nor adventure there, not least because of the extreme Muslim cultures and paradigms that exist in a few too many place; the appalling treatment of animals; and the frankly the less than great sailing conditions in terms of sea conditions, weather and wind. On top of that, the practices at sea in terms of 'fishing gear' are dangerous to other water users (making night sailing very risky in too many geographic locations) and disrespectful to sea life - and whether this is about justifying it because of 'making a living' vs cruising is irrelevant; they are moral things, of inherent right vs wrong. The chronic per capita plastic and other littering is also a big turn off as we see the indiginous population self-destroying their environment, and the 'authorities' doing bugger all about it - its nearly as bad as the UK! Did I mention the OTT 'authorities' attitudes to visitors, while ignoring so many other basic priorities & wrongs that should be addressed in their lives. Sure there are many brilliant things about being where you and others are; you offset these and come to an overall different net value. I see that, and understand that. No problem. Just don't hide stuff (for want of "facts"). Don't be afraid of emotion nor opinion. Yes, don't be click bait drama queens/kings, for sure, but don't become so vanilla (or scared of upsetting or disagreeing with the 'locals', acknowledging their values may be different) so as to bring little impact to the sense of place, people, attitudes, culture and the (often) amazing physical environment. VANILLAISM is as bad as the 'faux' drama bait clickers.

I wonder how you have formed your opinion of SE Asia without sailing here? A lot of what you say is partially true, but the balance is wrong. You've taken all the worst aspects and decided that's what the whole region is like. It would be very easy to do the same thing about the US, Europe or Australia. There's nothing wrong with telling it how you see it, but that doesn't mean RU-vid channels should be rude or uninformed. Get the facts right first, then explain without upsetting people. Emotion is good, but unfettered and misdirected anger doesn't help anyone. Cultural sensitivity in RU-vid channels can help foster sensitivity and knowledge in their viewers. Thanks for commenting. I'm a disabled American who once traveled the world SCUBA diving....Now that I'm unable to do I watch many of the RU-vid sailing channels and for the life of me have no idea which channels you are speaking about..Perhaps Plukky from Australia who's building an Aluminum Cat ,or maybe La Vagabond who just took possession of a new Tri hull Rapido, these are the only ones I'm aware of being in Asia lately...I wish you had been more specific...

There are many in this area, but we don't want to name names. I don't know Plukky and we support Delos, so we're not directly referring to either of those channels. Even so, the message is the same around the world: say whatever you like, but please check your facts and say it in a way that is not rude or misleading. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Liz 🙏

Between the cultural differences, the bad rep that Europeans/Yanks/Ozzies have and having to behave on camera it is probably best if we stay in the West 😮 It saves us travelling all that distance as well 😄😄 As for naming people or marinas, we have done that in the past only to find that people sometimes do not like being referred to. Marinas and harbours we usually show because our viewers are often local(ish) and may want to travel to where we are showing in the video. But this is why we almost never have other people on camera when they are on the boat. In the past, we have had to take videos down even after people have _consented_ to be in the vid and then do not like how they look or sound on camera. In short, it is not worth the hassle. So nowadays we (and ONE friend) are the only people who appear on the channel.
@followtheboat

There's no legal obligation to take down a video because someone doesn't like the way they are portrayed, but I get your drift. Over here it is much easier to photograph and talk to people on camera, they love it! I think we westerners are much more concerned with our privacy. Cheers, guys! Liz 🙏

I truly understand the message you are sharing. In the western world of the United States [Not the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA] there is a document that has the peoples rights which is the Bill of Rights and in that document under the first amendment freedom of speech is protected. Speech can be offensive but it is a freedom some are not willing to curve because it offends others, it’s a freedom
