Serena, never really thought about the grit ratings on sandpaper before. Is it number of grains that fit in a square inch? Staples has access port bushings and covers for hardly anything. The package also gives you the exact bit size.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
@@dlsdyer9071 Good question. I think it might have to do with the size of the grains. The smaller the number, the bigger and rougher the grain; the larger, the more fine. I have seen sandpaper in the 6000 range, which you can imagine, is suuuuuppper fine!
@dlsdyer9071
@dlsdyer9071 2 года назад
@@ThriftDiving just thinking that the more grains that fit in a specified area, the smaller the grain. I had not thought of it that way before.

Hey Serena…something I saw years ago about hole saws. Put the drill in reverse. Score the wood for a while in reverse and then, if you like, finish cutting in the forward setting. But I have seen people cut material all the way through in reverse. Just a thought… Thanks

The desk turned out really nice! Question: Several years ago, I painted my living room walls to resemble Old World or Tuscan water stained look. My walls are VERY HIGHLY textured. Now I'm ready for a change.... to a light gray called Basket of Bobbins. Funny because this room is to become my sewing room. Anyway, I've heard that you should clean/wash walls before paint. My walls are SO rough, how can I clean them? Just dust? I'm going to first use KILZ primer, because I'm going lighter. Suggestions? Also, I may have to do some of it using a brush, because of the high texture, again.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
Thank you, Nancy! I'd love to see a picture of how textured they are. That will come through to your new painted walls, too, unless you sand them down first. It would create a LOT of dust. Not impossible, but you would have to put up some plastic over everything in the room, or move it out, if you wanted to sand it first. If you're not interested in sanding, then you will want to clean/wash the walls (use Simple Green). The the roughness will have to be knocked down, unless you're okay with textured walls, just in a new color. Send me a picture at this email: serena@thriftdiving.com

Great point. I do tell people often when I use a sander but sometimes I forget to mention it at all times. But your correct. Let the sander do its job. Pressure increases the pigtail swirly marks.

@antiquesrestoration3874

Just a thought, you might have needed so many coats of stain because you used 300 grit sandpaper, which might be a bit too high for wood you plan on staining.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
Yes, you are right. Usually if you're staining, stopping at a 150 might be better, especially for oil-based stains. But after using these water-based stains multiple times, they always require more coats. I also think they look better with multiple coats, depending the color. But good point you're bringing up! :)

I have a project very much like this. I got a solid wood coffee table at a garage sale and got after it with 80 grit, it really took off the finish, but the wood looks different in certain spots, now I’m scared I went too deep.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
It's very easy to go too deep, especially if you lift the sander at an angle and it sands on an edge. That's what happened to a project I did that had a laminate wood top, and I had to disguise it. Here's a blog post that talks about what happened and how I covered it! thriftdiving.com/makeover-vintage-vanity/

@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
HAHAHA, Charlene, I know, right! But if you can believe it, we RARELY move furniture around in our house! Especially in this family room. It's very rectangle so that part of the room doesn't really allow for anything else back there in that area. It will likely be there for the next 10 years. HA! As for the painting, yep, I am about to head to HD to buy primer and paint as we speak! Or maybe Sherwin Williams. Can't wait to get it painted! It gets so much sunlight, that I might very well go with a light color, something pastel. :)

Great job as always! I have a question hoping you can help. I have a few pieces of beautiful antique furniture that I want to restore. The finish appears to have two different shades of varnish that blends together. I want to restore it back to its original beauty but I don’t know how to get that blended stained look. Also, I don’t know if a gel stain and top coat was used or for that matter what was used at all. Can you help?
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 2 года назад
Whew, that's a tough one! It's hard to match something to its original finish because you just don't really know what was used. The only advice I can offer is to do some sample boards on similar type of wood (e.g. oak, walnut, etc.). If possible, find a woodworking store where you can see some of the shades available for wood stains (or gel stains) and see what colors match best. Buy those and then do your own layers on the scraps to see how it looks and if you like it. You HAVE to do some tests first, so you know what the finished product is going to look like. Plus, at woodworking stores (see if you have a Woodcraft nearby), they might be able to give you an idea of what colors to buy to try to replicate the look you're going for.
