13:16 Quite agree, I'm growing some maples from seed that I collected from our local broadleaf maples. I planted them in October/September so I'll find out in spring I suppose how they've gotten on. I did grow an iron oak sapling but squirrels dug it up and killed it. Now I keep my saplings protected, lesson learned. One thing I do rather well as a rule is propagation. I am known in my family as that person who turns one plant into ten. It's well worth the benefits of doing so.

My problem recently (past few years) is I find myself very attracted to more "sweeping" or "leaning, off center" styles, but I tend to wire most of my trees in training into "S" shaped informal upright. I have 2 Shimpaku that arent really styled yet, they were very badly "pom-pom'd" years ago, and I've been letting them grow out and back bud alot, so I would have better material to try a different style. Maybe at some point you could do some lessons on taking material and working into a more graceful styling? Great vid as usual. Thanks for your time Peter, inspired as always....

I find if I want bud back, then I cut the needles just above the sheath, if not I pluck the whole needle. I have a few hundred JBP but only about 10 that are over 3 years old so excited to develop them, mistake of selling too many at the 2 yr old stage. Putting trees in bonsai pots will slow the growth so I keep then in big pots, don't look as cool but I want some fat trunks. Once they reach the trunk I want I will training pot them and work an ramifying. Great he takes such good care of the trees, I know it's a lot of work.
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Год назад
Yes, growing in bonsai pots won't thicken the trunk as fast. I'm growing a crab apple in the ground for this very reason. I plan to dig it up the year after the next (2024) hopefully will get done nice rigourous roots too because when I first put it in the ground the roots were very limited. The tree also looked a lot healthier this year

I respect it Sir how you share your knowledge.. Your love for bonsai shows when you have a plant at hand and when you aren't able to resist what needs to be done for every one of them... You have two beautiful maples ❤❤... I stay in India (Delhi) ... Was going through your soil components video... I am unable to find pine bark here... What can I use as a substitute sir? Also I would want to find healthy seeds of japanese maple, black pine, Chinese wisteria, sakurakaia... But I am unable to locate them here by myself... I would be helped if you can suggest a place to procure them... Either a nursery that you might know... Or a company that works under the umbrella of Amazon or flipkart... Looking forward to your guidance Sir... I so wish I could have been born around your place to learn from you🙂

Hi John! Eucalypts are difficult bonsai material but it can be done. I have no advice for you, I'm only a beginner myself, but a fantastic resource I've found for Australian Natives is the Aus Bonsai Forums. There are some incredibly knowledgeable growers doing amazing work there. They've been wonderfully helpful as a resource for my leptospermum (tea tree) and Callistemon (bottle brush). I know you'll find good info for Eucalyptus too. Good luck growing, youre a brave man!

@stardoll1995 Год назад
My guess is with Eucalyptus it's probably VERY hard mostly cause they're very resilient, fast growing and overpowering plants in the wild with very strong roots who are used to growing VERY tall so I personally wouldn't attempt it cause it's likely a nightmare to keep in check.

Im new to bonsai, and have only tried it with available seeds. Mine are not even a yr old yet. Ive also starting with very small pots. How do I know when to transfer to larger pot?
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Год назад
I'd say transfer when the roots fill the pot. If you're starting with very small pots check once a year (Feb or March in the Northern Hemisphere, pre-spring). For a very younger tree I've found they can stand being repotted once a year anyhow. In the beginning treat them like you would any other plant. Then once it's older and stronger you can try to train it into a bonsai pot.

@@reactiontoeffectiveenemyfire I think it was always a nursery, just not his...
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Год назад
@@reactiontoeffectiveenemyfire In my experience (UK) either you buy a pre-existing nursery or you'll need to buy a plot of land and then apply for change of use via the council which can take months, if not years. Also there is a chance the council could reject it. If you don't have much experience running a nersery you'll need to hire a manager who does have experience, otherwise your business will not succeed. It's a big risk to take to buy a plot of land with no gaurentee it'll do well. The land will need to make a profit to pay off its taxes. Most nurseries won't make a profit in their first year. So you need a nest egg to take the financial pressure of that... I mention all of this cus a relative bought a farm and that was "fun". Five years later only now turning the tiny profit
