You don't need to be hit by any shrapnel to die, though it does speed the process up, especially if chunks of your body are blown off. Also, most people can throw a grenade roughly 20-30 meters at best, and it usually takes a second or two for it to land after it is thrown. Grenades generally have a 3-5 second fuse, which means you may have more than a second to book it away. If it lands at your feet, you're not living, but if there's distance between you and the grenade, you could survive, though you may weigh less afterwards.
