I do days for two weeks and graveyards for two weeks. It's easy to go to nightshift I find, going back to dayshift is the real problem. I always find the first dayshift I go in with literally 1-2 hours sleep or nothing at all and just power through it, then crash when I get home.

Same here. Having a harder time as I age switching from nights to days as well.
@joshyjams55
@joshyjams55 Год назад
@@brandon152lee it is impossible, and never good long term. I'm at a point where I'm looking for a new career path, and plan to switch in the upcoming year. Regardless of the work and pay, steady dayshift jobs are important to do for your health long term. There will come a point where you just can not do it anymore and will need to change. I don't care what anyone says, it ultimately can't be done long term.

# 2 works best for me. Getting off in the morning after a 12 hour shift and not going to sleep till 7pm. Staying up for 24 hours is not ideal but I sleep through the whole night and wake up early in the morning ready for my day shifts. I also CANNOT look at the clock when waking up in the middle of sleep to use the restroom because I’ll see I have 2 hours left to sleep and my body won’t let me relax and go back to sleep 😢.

It's hard to find good insight for swing shift. I've been searching for info for the past 5 years. I guess I wasn't goggling the right verbiage. Thank you for sharing. Here where I work, we do 4 weeks on days and 4 weeks on nights as well as 2 2 3 schedule. I have my beautiful grandbabys during the week days on my days off, more so on my day schedule than my night one. When I'm on nights my muscles get really tired. I'm going to try the block out glasses. And the super green tonk. I already do the others. In addition I do dry brush techniques and Epson salt baths. Peppermint lotion helps with achy muscles.

Hi Teresa. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Magnesium tablets can also help the achy muscles too. I still sware by the SuperGreen Tonik (they have a new berry flavour too - supergreentonik.com/?rfsn=5835055.445e5f) and Swanwick glasses. I'm wearing them as we speak. Compression socks/elevating your legs after work could help too. Good luck. Emma

Thank you so much for your advise on going from night shift to day shift on your days off. Getting up is no problem after coming home on my last night shift and sleeping for 4 or 5 hours then up and off to do something , works great.. But how do you switch back to night shift when you have to go back to work the next night. I have been doing night shifts for two months now and I can't figure this out..Thank you.

Thanks for sharing, greats tips. I am working nights permanently for around 2 years and sleeping was a big issue. But for last 3-4 months I made some changes in my room and also I am sticking to the schedule, I am going to sleep at the same time even on my days off and it made a big difference. I am feeling/sleeping way better. However, I am going for 2 weeks holidays soon. And obviously I don't want to sleep throughout the days while on vacation. I am so used to at this point sleeping in the morning and throughout the day, I am afraid it will be difficult to adjust back to the day shift schedule. Any tips how can I make the transition for that time being? I would appreciate your help, thanks.

Hey Eddy! I totally understand this dilemma. Have you considered going to sleep at around 3am and waking at midday? I know it’s not perfect but you get to have lunch, dinner and enjoy the evening with your family and friends and get 7-9 hours sleep? The other option is to use Melatonin. I am not a huge fan of it personally, but it could be helpful in the two weeks you are on vacation when shifting to day shift? Using blackout glasses, taking regular naps, drinking a ton of water with fruit infused through it or even drinking ginger water would also be things I’d adopt to not become unwell and to sleep better. You’ll probably feel a little out of whack for a few days so remember to be kind to yourself. Good luck. Happy vacation. Cheers, Em

@joshyjams55
@joshyjams55 Год назад
Better to stay on one rotation, how come you went to two weeks swapping? I do the exact same shifts rotsting every two weeks so I know your pain, you always suffer the first dayshift after night blocks after two weeks because your body adjusts and there is no way around it but to hope you sleep the night before your first dayshift.

When I worked 11pm to 730 am I would sleep all day. I would be up to maybe 10 or 11 am after work but sleep the rest. N my days off were all sleep. But if I had 2 days off in a row, (which was rare), I could go out the 2nd day after recouping my energy. But no social life. It was alot easier to work over time too for me

Ok so my shift is always the same from 17-18 until 1-2 in the mornings but then I'm super awake until 8-9 some days even until 10 in the morning then I sleep until 17or 16 as possible and again the same for the last 5-6 years.And here comes the change I might start working in a hospital that shifts for me will be from the early morning till 2 o'clock or from 1-2 until 21 so no more night shifts ....tbh I'm not sure I can even transition, on my holidays I cant sleep during the nights I really need HELP to make that transition because I really think the job there is better and offers a lot more.PLEASE give me some advice!!!oh and if I get a nap in the morning hopping I'll get a sleep at night I'm always waking up between 3-4 in the morning and then the whole day I feel like garbage 🙁🙁

How many days off would you get between your last night shift and first day shift? I usually get a week off between my nights and days shift so the transition is smooth but sometimes, I finish friday morning and start day shift the next monday...I NEVER manage to switch in 2 days... is it just me or people cannot switch that fast?
@theothershift
@theothershift Год назад
Hi. Thanks for your comment. As a nurse working a rotating roster, the transition can sometimes be only one day. I.e, finish on a Saturday morning 0730 and start again on Sunday PM, 1330. This is pretty brutal though. Some people request this on purpose to "get them back to normality" I think it really depends on the type of work and how it's structured. To increase the "switch" time I think a couple of things are essential - sun exposure, limited exposure to blue light when trying to sleep, and eliminating hurdles stopping you from sleeping such as light, temperature, caffeine, alcohol, exercise etc.
@PT-mj3bk
@PT-mj3bk 9 месяцев назад
Well, I don't think I sleep enough at all. How long do you sleep after a nightshift? Pretty normal for me to go to bed at 8-8:30 am and be up at 1 PM and then back to work at 6 pm. In average I think I only get 4-5 hours of sleep after a night shift
@theothershift
@theothershift 9 месяцев назад
Personally, I don't think it's enough. Most adults need 7-9 hours per night, even on night shift to limit the long term health effects I speak about in some other videos. I know this can be almost impossible for some, but it's a good place to aim. Can you have a nap around 3pm? Or not get up so early at 1pm?

Yet I’m longing for working days and sleeping nights again permanently. So I could take a week off from work to transition. I need advice from you all please. This is Sunday I’m going into agency and give them the news. I weaned off coffee (use to be 4-6 cups coffee!) I actually went through hard withdrawal yet on other side. Healthier choice. Long for sunlight… Please help?? 10pm-6 am 20 years Going to days 8am-4 pm

Thanks for your comment and watching the video. It's funny you should ask this as I am writing a post as we speak about this topic! A few points I'd start with. 1. Be kind to yourself as your body "unlearns" the night shift habits. This will be hard and won't happen overnight but with time it will get easier. 2. Transition slowly if that suits you. Start going to bed earlier and earlier starting early in the morning then working back. I.e first night go to bed at 5am, then 4am, then 3am... 2. Keep using all your favorite sleeping aids. Blackout blinds, eye masks, white noise, ear plugs, chamomile tea, blue light blocking glasses (we recommend these www.swanwicksleep.com/pages/theothershift?uid=282&oid=3&affid=1532461) 3. I'm looking into gut health foods at the moment and their link to mental health and I think this could really help you transition back. 4. Connection. Enjoy your new "life" with those you love. Go out for dinner, walks, enjoy the sun, laugh. You will be tired but keep smiling. Good luck. Let me know how you go! Emma

About how many days or weeks did it take you to fully adjust your sleeping pattern from night shift to day shift?
@theothershift
@theothershift 2 года назад
Hi Jose. I wish there was a straight forward answer here. As a rotational shift worker, I jumped around from days to nights constantly so my sleeping pattern never really had time to adjust. However, for those who work permanent nights find it easier to adjust to night shift as it becomes the "new normal." Everyone will adjust at different rates based on a number of factors from their sleeping environment, to other stressors. My advice is to find a sleeping routine ASAP, eat healthy foods, find time for some exercise and enjoy some sunshine particularly when adjusting. Good luck.
