Hello and welcome, we are Em and Dan!

We wanted to create a special place for shift workers and those working night shift like ourselves, who might be battling sleep fatigue, struggling to exercise and stay healthy or finding the right balance between ‘you time’ and managing your relationships.

Our sole mission here at The Other Shift is to help you find that sweet spot - the plentiful life that’s possible for all shift workers out there.

The Other Shift gives you an inside look at how we keep our sanity despite ever-changing schedules. We’re excited to show you that it’s possible to do shift work and still thrive. Sure, there are times when favourite activities get bumped for some much-needed zzz’s - but we’ll teach you to find the silver lining in this unique life we’ve chosen.

I do this. 7p-7a shift. at 9 i do pushups, 10 squats, 11 shoulder presses with a 35 lbs pig egg i made. repeat. 9, 12, 3, finish with pushups at 6 . I walk on a treadmill on my break. I do this to maintain my sugar levels at night because I am diabetic. on my days 4 days Off I lift. i work 8 on 2 off 2 on 2 off, repeat. I just do them right there at my nurse desk. I've done it so much everyone just thinks its normal for me now, lol. hell even some jump in on the exercises. thing is I was losing weight and now I've stalled at 260. got 50 more to lose. folks say I look like ive lost more weight but the scale isn't moving. I also maintained a steady 190 grams of protein, with about a 2500 cal daily intake. its rough though. I don't take any energy stuff, and caffeine makes me sleepy. so it doesn't work for me. I just tried to establish a routine and discipline instead of motivation because I am never motivated. working on sleep hygiene next since I don't get enough sleep.

If you’re sleeping in the day then you can eat at night and not gain weight. Go to the gym and eat healthy. Only gain weight by having too many calories. As simple as that is all it needs to be

Thank you for the video. I do find it concerning though that you are recommending heat packs over electric blankets. Heat packs come with warnings that tell you that they should not be used in confined spaces (like under blankets) as they can start fires. Especially if they have been over-heated in the past. A heat pack should be thrown out even if there is just a smell of burning, much less has scorch marks. I’m not sure what the comparative statistics are but I’m going to continue to use my electric blanket (turning it off when I get into bed)

The research indicates night shift workers die fifteen years early. I’ve worked nights for twenty years. 7p-7a. I meal prep the day before my shifts start. I generally eat turkey burger because it’s minimally processed, eggs, and a side of veggies. I take vitamin d3 with my meal since they are fat soluble. I stay away from fructose, carbs and sweets b/c they interfere with mitochondrial function. I find I need the protein b/c it isn’t causing much of an insulin response and I stay full after lunch.

I've worked nighshift for 12 hours everyday without offdays for 6 months, and i kinda loved it. I don't have to go out and "socialize", people wouldn't expect me to so that's a plus. The schedule suits me as a person, and even now having dayshift, i immediately go up to my room and just spend time with myself. Though people would come and bug me to hang out etc. I guess graveyard shift is a dream for introverted and weird me. 😅 Plus: no bosses and manager working during the night. It's all calm and peaceful.

FOR ME.. I found that a sleep mask with headphones and maybe rain sounds or ANYTHING SOFT to block out daytime sounds from outside of my RV. I have also put foil over my windows. I also turn on the AC so I don’t get hot. I sleep like a champ. #Musicozy

When i did night shift i would eat a small meal after work in the morning keep sun exposure to a minimum and sleep. After waking up in afternoon i would get lots of sunlight workout and eat my big meal. Than i would fast and not eat again untill morning, got me through the night shifts. Back to day no more night shifts !

I'm a delivery driver and work 7 hour shifts. You never get time to have a break and the work is gruelling. You have to survive on your one big meal before your shift and often there is little to no time to even drink. Any suggestions on how to takle this ?

I just retired several months ago. I recently switched back to being a "day walker" after being on graveyard shift for over 26 years. I didn't rush it. I used to be in bed by 10-11 AM and up between 7-8 PM. I took my time with this, I'm retired, after all. I just started going to bed earlier and earlier and tried to get up earlier and earlier every day. My original goal was to be in bed by 1-2 AM and get up around 9-10 AM. In just about 2 1/2 weeks I was going to bed at 10-11 PM and getting up at 7-9 AM. I was surprised at how quickly I readjusted. It was almost no effort, I don't know why it happened so quickly. And as a day sleeper I used all the tricks: windows covered up, room kept cool, white noise machine (a GOD send that thing!) and kept to this schedule even when not working, including vacations. Sadly, now I'm missing the peace of night time. I go out and there's people everywhere, it's noisy, traffic is crazy, etc. But, I can work around the house to my hearts content because I can use power tools, hammer, get things I need and there's this big, brilliant glowing thing up in the sky, too! It's nice to have a bit of a tan again. But, I must admit, I miss the peaceful quiet you get with being a night person. Good luck to all of you out there trying to change back. It's quite disorienting at first, but you'll appreciate it after a while. Just don't sit on your butt and rot. You just need to get out of the chair and find things to do. Keep busy, go for walks, whatever. I'm still getting used to it myself, but I'm sure it's a better, healthier way to live. The night shift is a killer in more than one way. Good luck!

Thanks for that video. I personally try both. Before sleep and after sleep. I prefer after sleep. I could do it a day when i will work during the night or a day i will have my night off. And after a night shift i don’t feel to go to the gym.

# 2 works best for me. Getting off in the morning after a 12 hour shift and not going to sleep till 7pm. Staying up for 24 hours is not ideal but I sleep through the whole night and wake up early in the morning ready for my day shifts. I also CANNOT look at the clock when waking up in the middle of sleep to use the restroom because I’ll see I have 2 hours left to sleep and my body won’t let me relax and go back to sleep 😢.

I started working night shift in a supermarket about a year ago, 11pm-6am. And I really love it. Take vitamins, especially vitamin d, make sure you get at least 7 hours sleep, and try to stick to a pattern even when you have a night off. I usually sleep for 3-4 hours when I get home from my shift, wake up and eat some lunch, then sleep for another 3-4. Pay is good, no managers, no customers, and commuting is so peaceful compared to rush hour!

Been working night shift 1030pm to 730pm don't mind it at all. Place is quiet and don't have to deal with people. Go home get my 6 7 hours of sleep wake up gym and still spend time with my love ones before work. Plus I have weekends off which I usually sleep normal hours like a baby.
