IMPORTANT TO ALL THOSE WATCHING - The cover with the Playstation wording SLIDES off towards the side with the Seagate hardrive (this is why we need to remove the Torx 10 screwdriver), DO NOT try and lift the cover from the sides. THIS IS WHAT THIS VIDEO IS MISSING
Thanks. I shouldve read the comment first. Broke a tab trying to lift it up until one tab broke and it slid like a charm. Then I saw how the plate was made from the inside and that it was supposed to slide.
@@mikaello1729 I didnt clean and assemble it back yet. I only found the time to open it. Im waiting to find the time to work on it and on the meantime i'm contemplating buying thermal paste.
Cleaned my PS3 today. I got it on launch day and this is the first time I've cleaned it. Wish I'd done it outside, now I have to dust the house! The PS4 us so much easier. Great tutorial. 😀
Just a small tip for those who dont want to wait to purchase a torx 10 screwdriver- You can use a precision flathead bit and wedge it in a good spot to turn the safety screw. Works like a charm!
Update: We have two 80GB PS3s that we had bought used just to play Gran Turismo 5. We thought we were going to have to trash them, because they were constantly overheating and took forever to load race tracks or anything really, but I took them apart and cleaned them and they run so cool and fast, it's ridiculous!!! Thanks Speedy!!!
@aw3 tech You need to CAREFULLY follow these instructions. Asap, my friend. Also be careful not to do what I did and accidentally snap the little black bar.
"This component" at 5:52 is the power supply. Be careful with this and don't tinker around with it too much other than removing it and wiping down the outside of it as the capacitors inside can hold a charge. A can of compressed air can be used on it also.
Oh my, I had no idea you need to clean the dust out of it. I've had mine since March 2008. Today was it's first cleaning thanks to this well informed video! Now it's running silently. :) Thank you for your video!
I had a cockroach problem. yeah they got into my ps3 and when i cleaned it, i took some window screen (the same screen you'd find on your home windows) and cut it, and kinda glued it over the vents. doesn't obstruct airflow at all and kept the bugs out. since then the bug issue has been fixed but the screen is still over the vents. still helping for peace of mind. great vid though! keep it up!
Bless you man, my sister got 3 games stuck in the disk drive and I was able to easily take it apart and get them out without any damage to my ps3 or the games. Go you!
Thank you for the how-to video. It was nice to have something to follow along with. Mine was a Fat PS3 never opened since I bought it and it was pretty clean. Mostly dusty around vent areas inside and around the plastic housing.
Just got the ol panini maker 3 a few weeks ago for about 40 bucks and been meaning to clean it. This video is really helpful my guy. Keep up the good work!
i got mine at launch and cleaned it for demon's souls for the first time now, too. gonna test it later. let's hope i did everything right and it won't explode lol
Just a note for everyone doing this especially on the older models with 90nm chip processes, it goes a LONG way to replace the Cell and RSX thermal paste, if you're feeling lucky enough even delid both of them and replace the thermal paste under the heatspreaders, I have gone down 2 fan speed modes by doing this and the unit runs so much cooler, the paste was literally dust when I took the heatspreaders off, especially after 10+ years.
Deliding myth has been debunked several times. Some noobs on the internet think they are better than cooling system designed by engineers. In reality the actual cause of ylod has been established as the poor components used in manufacturing the RSX graphics processor. Sony knew the reason behind yods but they never released it
Finally time to use this as an actual guide. Cousin gave me his old PS3 saying that if I could fix it, I could have it. Then he told me the only issue was that it wouldn't read discs.
Thanks so much for this video! I was able to do almost all of it and OH MY was there never ending dust! Ps3 was given to me by a friend and I thought it was dying.. saved it now! It is sooooo silent 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
I was going to clean my PlayStation 3 Fat but for some reason, I could either not remove or find the hidden screw. So basically, I couldn't open it. I absolutely enjoy your video because It's clear and simple.
Thanks very much loads of help I've already stripped my ps3 slim x 3 and a ps 4 slim and a ps4 fat and now thanks to you I will strip and clean a ps3 fat cheers have a good weekend.
another method i use to clean out my computer of dust build-up is an air compressor with an air hose (of course) and an air blow gun. works really well, because its blowing out air at a very high pressure and speed, and you can get all of those dust particles out. keep in mind, dont stand too close, as you dont wanna damage your components.
Thank you for this I just took my ps3 fat boy apart I follow your instructions and it works perfectly! 😁 My ps3 is slightly different from yours. I have the OG launch model CECHA01. It would freeze everytime I turn it on. I took it apart it had a blanket of dust in it. I cleaned it up real good now it works like new. Thanks! 👍🏽
Great video! Awesome for a warm up, refresher, before taking it apart! Just one thing, you seemed to have skipped the part taking the top plastic cover off? Thanks for the informative content!
Just a tip for those people who are worried about taking it apart and putting it back together if you get some coloured pens like a shrpys you can colour code ur screws to where they go so you don’t get lost putting them back
Thanks for the vid I need to clean mine I haven't ever opened it and its a fat ps3 I got near launch, I gotta give sony credit I did not know it was that easy to take out and possible replace the hard drive that's amazing
I was all worried that I would need to buy a torx screwdriver, but I got my PS3 hand-me-down from my uncle and he never put that screw back in from when he modded the storage lmao
i’m pretty sure i messed up putting it back together, but i appreciate the help for disassembling and cleaning it. for some reason the power supply isn’t working and i’m not sure why.
I did the same on a ps4 and it didn’t work because the first time I best the power supply pins, maybe you should disassemble it and check if there’s the problem for the ps3
I got my PS3 preowned in 2011 and still use it to this day. Opened it for the first time just now following this guide and there was so much dust. About 1cm thick in parts.
@TheSpeedyDiver thanks for the lesson. I've cleaned electronics before and I cleaned houses/businesses for a long time (way too long...cleaning for a living is dangerous)... I place my finger over the nozzle to avoid losing small things but you can suck up the worst of the dust with a vacuum...then use cotton swabs for tight places and micro fibre clothes...just make sure there's no static electricity... Ideally get outside like you said but it's winter here with snow drifts over my head...
My original Xbox disc wasn't opening up even when i pressed on the tiny hole next to it. So i opened it up and couldn't see the belt, so i got frustrated and threw it away after owning it for 15 years, i regret not taking my time!! Thank you for this information on the Ps3 as it helps me to get familiar with what it looks and going on inside. Pretty basic really.
