I've received so many messages asking me about how to become a teacher in NYC. I thought I would share my thoughts on 3 super popular routes for certification within New York.

How many of you are hoping to be a teacher or are already in teaching? What certification do you want/have?

Wow, that's such a big shift! I actually had planned to working in the business world at first. What kind of subject area/grade are you interested in? Teaching fellows could be a great option for you if you don't want to incur any debt as well. But something to consider is that you are required to have a certain number of credits based on what subject you want to teach. You might need to take on some debt to make that requirement for the number of credits you need. I will like to add that the grass is always greener on the other side. I personally romanticized teaching and though I love it so much more than the time I interned in business, it's not what it look like in movies! But I'm sure your parents could also vouch for that. And the income is livable but it can be hard to go from a higher paying job to a lower one. You might want to have some extra savings or things before entering the profession.

I just applied to Hunter and Touro for Childhood Education/Special ED 1-6, if I do not get into either I am going to take Grad classes in the same dual cert non matriculated at almost more then half the price (5 classes) then matriculate into Touro. I have a child and it took me a while to get out of Undergrad so I decided to take my time because I couldn't make the teacher prep commitment even with out a child.

Thank you so much Nina this is so helpful. I am graduating Hunter and waiting for a response from the teaching fellows, I would love to hear more tips from you for people going into teaching as an undergrad. Do you know of any more programs? What would you do or change if you were graduating college right now?

Hi Nina, most states like Florida would hire you first if you are not certified, and then they will give you three years with a temporary certificate to teach and then take the necessary tests to obtain the permanent one. Is it the same case as NY? do they have programs that allows you teach while obtaining the courses? Lastly, can I apply to a school, once hired I would be working towards certification. I have been a teacher in FL for two years, and unfortunately I have to move to NY and I do not what to do. Any advice?

Ahhhh so glad your from NYC! I was majoring nursing but because of some personal big changes that have occurred in my life I’ve decided it’s best to go for teaching plus I kinda already have the experience for it ! I work in an after school program! But I decided to major in early childhood education but realized that’s for pre-k and I really don’t want to work with pre-K kids I want to work with kids from kindergarten- 3rd grade at least so now I decided it’s best to major in childhood education instead of early ! What do you think ???

Wow, education and nursing and both such noble professions. (My mom is a nurse!) I think Education is an amazing field to go into. I will say that in New York it can be hard unless you're willing to find roommates. (Just because New York is so expensive!) But the pay gets much better over time and you can't beat the schedule. It ultimately comes down to if you enjoy working with kids. I'm so glad I decided to become a teacher!

@@NinaThomas wow really that’s so cool that your mom is a nurse ! I admire all health workers ! But how was your experience studying to become a teacher ? What was your first job or first internship regarding your career?

@@melanicruz4116 you should look into iteach or teachers of tomorrow they online Alternative teacher cert program where you take online classes to be a teacher and also take a content exam in whatever subject you want to teach to get your intern teacher license so you can teach for 1 yr to get your full teacher license. No student teaching at all. They not in NYC.

I have an associate's in communications and really don't want to go back to school, so you are saying these programs are all you need to teach?

Hi Nina, I'm wondering if you have any advice for me. I'm currently looking into relocating to NYC, and I want to get a job as a teacher. I have a master's in history and have been working in the museum field. From what I've gathered online, I qualify for a Transitional C Certificate, but I cannot find any advice on how that is actually obtained. Every program seems to be geared for someone with their bachelor's and leads them to get a master's degree, but I really don't want to get a second master's if that can be avoided. Thanks so much!

Hi Meghan! I recommend you go to Teach.com and select the certificate you want. You can send Teach your transcripts and they will tell you what you're still missing to teach in your content area.

Please I need somebody to help me with my question. I did my associate degree in early childhood education. I did my bachelor’s degree in children and youth studies. Now I am pursuing my master’s degree in higher education administration. I work as a Pre-k teacher. I want to be a certified teacher and maintain my certification. I am just waiting until I finish my master’s degree then I will apply to be a certified teacher. I am not sure if I can be a certified teacher and maintain my certification because my Masters’ degree is in higher education administration. Can I be a certified teacher and maintain my certification as a teacher even though my master’s degree is in higher education administration? I work in a preschool setting. Please let me know!!

Hi, do you know of any around the GPA requirement for Bachelors degrees? I want to go into art teaching. I got my BFA in Fine Art in a major that was not my strongest subject, so I had below a 3.0, though most of the poor grades were due to harsh grading in a competitive art environment and not academically based. I was wondering if there are any ways to get a teaching certification with a Bachelors that does not require you to have had a certain GPA. Any help here would be appreciated, ty.

Also, I'm considering maybe attempting to get the Masters in Teaching degree online through a program that does not offer a teaching license, as the online programs tend to be less restrictive when it comes to minimum undergrad GPAs. Then, once I have a higher GPA via my masters degree, go back and try to get the teaching certification at that point. Does that make sense as a potential avenue? Any help would be great, thank you.

Dont go to these alternative certification routes. These routes are really only for Math, science and above all SPED. On top of that they will send you to the toughest and most out of control schools in the entire city. They are after all sending you to the schools that are finding diffculty in recruiting teachers in the normal process. Just go to school first in the teaching field you are actually interested in, then you have the freedom to apply to the sorts of schools you potentially want to work in for 25-30 years, which is a long ass time lol
