You are advocating using what i call the Ping Pong game, that is getting the dog to run between two people. What I do is actually don't give the dog a break, as soon as one person has given him the reward, the other person calls. I find the faster you do it, the better it is for the dog and more exciting. In tonight's class I am going to be teaching the recall!!! Good advice about not trying to challenge the dog for a recall when something interesting is happening. However, I tell my students that if the dog comes near them while off leash of it's own volition, to reward the dog and send them away. Likewise call them, reward and send them away to "go play". The problem most people have is they only call their dog at the park when they are going to put the leash on! The dog learns that fun stops if they come back when asked. Surprising how may dog owners don't really catch on to that and have an "aha" moment when we point it out :-)

You’ve hit the nail right on the head! I have a very excitable and focused GSD of about 18 months. He’s an entire male. His recall is acceptable until a distraction is there. Mainly but not always, another dog. I’ve been trying to make myself more interesting than the other dog without success. I am experienced with GSDs and have kept and trained them myself for more than forty years. This is the first time I have failed to get a perfect recall in all circumstances. HELP!! Lol.

Awesome videos. Have looked at heaps of dog training videos and definitely prefer you technique to all the others I’ve seen. If I could offer a suggestion OR request it would be to see more of people you actually demonstrating your techniques with the dogs. i.e. explain the technique then actually demonstrate it with an animal. Seeing thing done the correct way by a professional trainer has FAR more impact than merely hearing it in a video.

Can you do a video on how to properly train your 8 weeks old puppy to kennel potty train? I don't want him to be locked up all day.. I have been doing 30 to 40 minutes play time and then 40 minutes kennel time. I have been using meal times for training. But I feel bad he is in his kennel so long. Please help! I live in an apartment 3 floors up

Thank you for this! How would one train dog for obedience, however? Our 8 month old cross collie is just hyper excited around dogs and in the park there are always other dogs, not something one can avoid every day :)

So, I have recall perfected for low distracted areas. Now, when the puppy is off leash in a high distracted area and is totally having fun, how do I get the puppy back to me?

In the recall game, does the other person reward as well or is it only when you recall them to you?

My collie is 100% obsessed with a ball. Should I use the ball as a reward for recall, or use food? Thanks

Our dog (18 months) isn't terrible at recally, but she can disappear from view, e.g. into woods, and then take too long (5-10 mins) to come back. She's always returned (so far!) but I'd like it a little quicker. Do you still reward this "bad" behaviour?

This may have already been answered but what treats do you recommend for a Goldador pup names Rosa. She’s learning quick thanks to your videos but I feel the treats I’m using are to hard, and distract from learning. Plus I don’t want to be feeding her unhealthy treats Thanks

Thank you for all the tips. If i may ask you. I ve got a female rottie, 5 years old, which is very obedient in everything, except when she is off leash and there are cats around. Unfortunately it was taught when it was younger to chase them and play. Is there any way i could fix it at this age?? (I wasnt the owner, got her from my brother at the age of 4, but she knows i am the leader and obeys.

My dog got attacked really bad when he was a pup and ever since he runs off and chases dogs to fight he just won't listen to me and I can't catch him because he's a whippet/staffy

Can you do a video on teaching your dog to fetch? Mine chases after the toy and then puts it in her bed and comes back with nothing.... 🤷🏻‍♀️

It would be useful to have a bit more focus and demonstration of the recall with distractions (but I need to go check out your other videos).

My dog goes and starts sniffing into dustbin, how can I teach her some boundaries, I don't want to challenge my recall when this is happening.

These are great tips and I agree with them. However, I have trained police K9’s and we use food reward for a lot of the training. He is the thing good works until you start taking the food out of the equation. Even if you slowly take the food out most dogs will disobey. These is why I’m firm on light compulsion work with a prong collar or a choker. Compulsion work builds a solid obedience dog. However, compulsion work has to be done correctly or you will shut a dog down.

He didn’t explain what to do when your dog is excited and doesn’t want to listen. He just says don’t pull your dog away from things he’s excited about.
