So that link u have wasn’t the exact page to where you order the gauge. I used this page on their site BUT they only offer Australia or New Zealand under where you select country when entering your shipping information. Is this the right one cause it’s the only one I can find on their site. Can I just put my address but select Austria or something? Or did it use to offer USA but not anymore? www.gatesaustralia.com.au/products/automotive/tools-and-sales-aids/sales-aids/belt-wear-gauge

As an ASE certified mechanic for 16yrs professionally I went to school for Toyota and hold a Toyota T10 program Associates Degree. I worked for Lexus almost 5 years before quitting to open an independent shop. I have to thank you for all the videos you make. they help explain what I'm doing to my customers car a lot easier by being able to show them on your videos. also keep up the weekend questions I like seeing if we got the same answers 99% of the time we do. you're a smart man and I have a lot of respect for you thank you

Scotty - on my 2014 Accord, Honda put a pointer on the belt tensioner arm that shows you when the belt is stretched and needs replacing. Once the pointer gets past the hash marks on the bracket - voila - you'll know. A pretty simple and ingenious way of being able to tell without removing the belt.

I kept having a problem with my 2005 Corolla and the belt making noise when it rained or was humid out. Had the tensioner and belt replaced once under warranty as their was a service bulletin. That shut it up for a few years. Then it was doing it again so I replaced the belt. Again it lasted a few years and started doing it again. I found out when I went to order a new belt there was a upgraded tensioner by Gates. It uses a spring unlike the old one. Replace the belt and tensioner. No more squeak. But I can see the downside to the upgraded one. When the engine is cold and RPM is up when it's in gear and your at a light it makes a vibration noise. I can live with that.

My mom's boyfriend is borrowing my car at the moment. It's a 2006 Mazda 6i with less than 57,000 miles and I bought it new. She just told me that he called and was upset because he had to replace the fan belt all of a sudden. That fan belt has never so much as squeaked, nor did the recent inspection find any issues at all with my car's engine at all. It had NONE of the signs that would have suggested the fan belt was about to go out. My mother had a 2007 Mazda 6i and it currently has over 150,000 miles on it and she sold it to my aunt who uses it every day and that fan belt has never had to be replaced. The power steering was never an issue with my car. She always handled like she was glued to the road, the A/C has never had issues as it blows cold AF, have never had the lights dim when I started it, but all of a sudden after he's had it to go from job to job up in and around the Dalls/Fort Worth area, the fan belt just suddenly "broke". If anything else suddenly starts "breaking down" on my car, (that again has never had any issues and still has better 'pick up' than my mom's new Ford Fusion) should I be suspicious and demand my car be returned to me?
@AsiAzzy
@AsiAzzy 8 лет назад
In some modern cars, the belt is tensioned by the belt itself. It's elastic belt and fixed pulleys. It's a pita to change this thing even with the tool (since you need to rotate the engine to slip in or out the belt.

I have one of those free tools, however, the one in Australia is designed differently. it has a handle that you put your thumb and your index finger, with a long skinny nose on it. Basically, you put it between the grooves, and if the tip of the nose doesn't point back out, then the belt is worn out. on good belts, the tip of the nose is supposed to point back out when the rest is inside the groove

Such a cheap item to replace but no one ever replaces it. Just changed out the 2 original belts in a 2010 Camry LE i4. Both cracked and even worst shape than the worn out one you shown. I was surprised it didn’t snap. Replaced with Gates brand. No noise runs smooth. Don’t want to get stranded in the winter or over heat the engine.

What about "stretch belts" that don't use a tensioner pulley they just adjust themselves? I was told that the old belt needs to be cut off and the new belt installed with a special tool. I have a 2006 Mazda 3 with a 2.3 liter engine that uses one of these belts.

Do I need to buy an AC belt? (3.0 3ZVE with three belts: power steering to fan, altenator to fan, and AC to idle pulley). When it comes to replacing my belts, and keeping a spare set, can i omit the AC belt and save some money? Or does it drive something else too? Thanks!

I might have a contender for #1 here, the one off my Mom's van was split in the middle for most of it and cracked all over the place. Scotty, A fellow San Antonian here. How in the heck to get a new serpentine belt on when it is slightly too tight ? New serpentine belts are way tighter than old because the new one has plenty of material and has not yet been stretched. This makes the installation process for the newer/tighter belt difficult to impossible, even with the tensioner cranked to maximum loosness. Can you please share some pro-tricks to get the belt on when faced with this difficulty. Thanks for a response.

I got a 2001 GMC Jimmy I put a brand new belt on it and a squeal went away for a few weeks but started chirping then started continuously squealing and is now squealing loud I'm currently at a loss but I do notice that the outside of the belt looks glossy, not the ribbed side could the water pump or idler pulley be getting stiff? I turned all the pulleys with the belt removed but maybe it's stiff when it's under tension.
