How To Get Respect Without Being A Bully - Jordan Peterson
goo.gl/DLouoh
Jordan Peterson recently expertly handled a debate during an interview with BBC's Channel 4 news (The video was called: Jordan Peterson debate on the gender pay gap, campus protests and postmodernism). And JBP did it without being a bull or being aggressive. So how do we get respect without being a bully? Well, we often think that getting respect and being aggressive go hand in hand. Because unfortunately, it’s often the bully that gets the most respect in the schoolyard and even in the workplace. But Jordan Peterson is an exemplar of a different way to generate massive amount of respect. So in this video we’re going to explore 3 main things he does that force people to respect you WITHOUT being a bully.
Now, we focused a lot on respect in this video but that's actually just one out of four emotions that are going to create an amazing first impression on anyone cross-culturally. Now, if you're curious with the other three emotions that you want to create in that person are to make an amazing first impression, I made a video on that that breaks down what those four emotions are so that you can start using them today to consistently make killer first impressions.
0:30 Jordan Peterson calls it "pacing your reality"
4:50 Jordan Peterson tells stories effectively
6:54 Jordan Peterson uses archetypal stories

@KaiserSoze679
@KaiserSoze679 7 месяцев назад
Except he's really not. Charisma is literally defined as a compelling attractiveness or charm that inspires devotion in others. When more than half of the people who are aware of your existence hate your guts, and the only people who seem to see that charm or attractiveness in you are the ones that already agreed with your obvious prejudices, clearly there's nothing "compelling" there. You wanna see real charisma? Look to guys like The Rock, Terry Crews, Keanu Reeves, Chris Hemsworth - the kind of guys that next to nobody has a bad word to say about, no matter what walk of life they come from. That's charisma. I guess I'd give you speech in that he has a good vocabularly and speaks with confidence and conviction.... but I mean, so do dictators. So do sociopaths. So do cult leaders (which frankly I'd argue he's verging on himself.) That's not only not always a good thing, but in the wrong person it's a very dangerous quality.

I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. Don't mistake respect with fear. Fear can only keep people in line as long as it persists. Respect does not need constant show of force if even at all. That is why those who fear you, will betray you the moment there is nothing more to deter them. Those who respect you, will stay loyal or at least neutral.
@AnAcousticCow
@AnAcousticCow Год назад
Fear and respect do go hand in hand, however it's not as simple as it sounds. Fear(itself) is not respect as it invokes pressure and an uncomfortable, defensive yet cautious mindset into people. When feared, people listen to you indefinitely to avoid confrontation and truthfully lack affection and *Respect* towards you. Respect is when someone projects your worth and has affection for you because they feel you are affectionate towards them yet they *Fear* the absence of your affection for them. I respect God so I hold fear towards him. Fear is the absence of respect. Respect is the absence of hatred.

One key point is the fact that Jordan Peterson is a highly educated doctor in academia. A lot of people who try to argue their point are not 'that' well educated. Their egos are not controlled by their intellect. Dr. Peterson is in control of his ego. That's power.

Then, you won't need others to show love or respect to you anymore. Another key point: respectable individuals will respect you. Assholes will disrespect you, no matter what. Peace.

I always wondered 'how do these simple people become gurus to the masses?'. After watching Dr. Peterson for so long, I must admit he shows the answer again and again. He must've found the jewel in the heart, the source of all knowledge. If so, it wasn't easy, it took hard work to get to the top of his field, and then boom! Illumination. Just to be clear, not everyone has something important to teach you. But act that way. People try to pin JP down on that one all the time. It's just a concession that you don't know everything.

Well, everyone has something, positive, negative, as examples that one can learn from. Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. Hard to remember that sometimes for me as I let other things become more important than people sometimes. I need to be cognizant of that always. Have a good one, friends.

One title says it all, "How to talk so your child will listen, and how to listen so your child will talk." Changed my life. Three tools I learned there were 1. Realize that you want to understand how the other person is feeling and thinking. 2. Speak softly so that the person has to engage with you to hear you. 3. As a non-native English speaker, I have difficulty understanding JP sometimes but when I do understand him, he makes a lot of sense with what he's saying. I love the way he explains philosophical ideas from psychologist perspective.

I think there is some prerequisite information needed for some of the things he says to understand him. He uses a lot of metaphors, too, but they are explained elsewhere, or in his books.

I saw something from Peterson in one of those final clips that I don’t think I’ll ever see his contemporaries, specifically people who specialize in “owning” their opponents (biggest example in my mind being Ben Shapiro), he’s just standing with his hand on his chin, calmly listening to the opinions of the person who’s talking to him. It conveys a deep respect for not just the person, but for their intelligence and right to have an opinion, and I think that’s what gains him respect during and after debates. Unlike people who indulge in shouting matches to feed their ego or widen their echo chamber, he appears to have a deep respect for the other person, which makes it easier for them to respect him in turn. Tl;dr: An easy way to gain respect is by first showing someone else that respect, people are more likely to show you respect if they themselves feel respected.

In a world where most people are trying to "one up" the other person, JP is trying to educate AND better the world around him; he's doing that by making each person to be responsible about their own lives and with time they will improve their families, friends, communities. That by itself could change the world but unfortunately the world is against that type of mentality

The best 3 things you can do to make people respect you is to 1) listen actively, 2) apologize when you’re wrong, and 3) lead by example, especially during difficult situations.

Or what you can do is repeat what you thought you heard back to them and say so what I hear is you are telling me this is what you see or what you feel if he say yes now you have a basis to respond in which they’ve agreed to your thoughts on what you heard and are more likely to understanding hear you out

@@thinktankcritic5267 Pt 1 depends on the other person. Some are silent ,others are talkative. The majority is inbetween. Within both these groups there are bullies, actors but also gentles. The majority is usually inbetween these. If someone is talkative one has to listen for a while. If the person when done talking suddenly wants to do something else, he or she is either a narcissist or has ADHD disorder. In that case you won't be able to talk rationally to them. If needing to teach them something you must use other approaches.

It wasn't necessary so you really have watch what you say, and have levels of passive aggressiveness, which you said that already. My brother does that or used to and it's really easily spotted. It made feel confused and anxious. As you said, consider who your concerning with.....I just learned something that will really help me. Thank you so much!!

It's also very common to notice nastiness on the other side but at the same conveniently fail to notice it on one's own side or otherwise make excuses for it. In-Group/Out-Groupd Bias I think it's called.

Your comment is unfortunate as it exemplifies what this video pointed out as being unpersuasive to those who don't agree with your point (and the whole intention of making a point is to persuade, no? Unless you just like beating people over the head with your unaddressed self-righteousness which is unhealthy to you and annoying to others). You are not considering the other side and have automatically crowned yourself the moral and intellectual superior with zero to learn. Clean your house first. Your side is not without blame WHATSOEVER. No one is.

It may have something to do with people identify too much with their opinions. With the demise of many social institutions in many people’s lives. - religion, the local community, ethnic identification even their family - people form their sense of self around their opinions and become very emotional in defending them. Little realising that they’re going to at least modify their opinions throughout their lives through experience and learning if they are a person open to change. There is nothing sadder than someone in their 50s and 60s with the same opinions as they had in their 20s.

Sean Henry Newman wtf? You clearly don't understand Marxism. Peterson is a wonderful speaker and sounds so smart and reasonable he appears to make sense, just think it over a bit, go a little deeper and you'll start to question his subtext. He's really very simple and not all that helpful for most people
@sabretooth9136

sylvieis agreed. Peterson also often sounds very bitter and angry at colleges - he doesn't come across well at all imo. He has a very rabid cult though who seem to believe he's God and can do or say no wrong.

Came across this video and I must say, I am impressed at how thorough the information is. This is a niche area of study that embodies skills of perception, emotional health, interpersonal communication, and body language. Its a vital skill and essentially what a "spokesperson" or a representative/mascot does. I learned something today and appreciate the hard work it must take in providing this needed info to the public.

When arguing don't assume that you are always right, always be open on the possibility that you might be wrong, and constantly criticize or question your own beliefs so that if you enter an argument or a discussion, you'll be more likely to answer any questions against your beliefs as you probably already asked those questions to yourself before.

"Clean up your room" means also to start getting your live in order in little steps. It's the idea that if your life is a mess, surely there is always one little part that you can do to make your life a little better. This in the end spirals you upwards. You don't just go out fight the dragon, you first get your armour fixed and think about what exactly you will do, which ultimately raises your chances of killing the dragon.
