Make sure that all of your connections are clean and have no corrosion on them. Corroded connectors will really throw off your readings.
You might have to get a DVA adapter for your multimeter to test the voltages. Some voltages can be tested without this adapter. However, these readings are not always accurate.
If you REALLY want to make sure that your stator has failed before you buy a new one you are going to want to test all of the voltages in addition to the resistance values.
Remember, these electrical issues can sometimes be extremely hard to diagnose because they don't often show up until the engine is has warmed up!

Awesome video!! I bought a boat that I'm having troubles starting it's a 1965 Johnson 40hp 2stroke I checked the spark with an inline spark tester and the light is very dim... The wires looked like Micky mouse club house they were going everywhere so I got a wiring diagram for it and hooked everything up. Would a very dim light cause a no start on one of these? It seems my spark plug wires come right from under the flywheel would my coil packs be under there as well? Didn't want to have to take it off if a dim light isn't a problem because it doesn't start on starting fluid.. (90psi on on both cylinders on pressure test)

Thanks Matt, for a very good video. The stator out of my 91 Force 50 looks very similar to the one in the video, 2 spark coils plus a charging coil. Is yours out of a fore motor? The prior owner tells me that the motor died in the lake and I found a burned out regulator and one of the two spark coils had a small burn in one of the 5 poles. I tried rewinding the bad spark coil and now it shows just 180 ohms while the other one shows 750 ohms.

I need help! I’ve got a 1990 mercury 40hp 4cyl 2 stroke outboard. After running great all day, and a 2 hour float break it wouldn’t start. I learned it had no spark getting to the coils. I’ve done all of the tests and have found that the 2 blue/bluewhite wires read 11,000 ohms with spec being 5,000-7,000ohms. Also, when checking each wire to ground, the yellow wires that attach to the rectifier read 5-9ohms, where as the others read open. Could this be a bad stator? With it just being the charging coil, would it still get spark if the others were still good? Thanks!!
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 26 дней назад
5000 to 7000 ohms seems very high to me, but if that's the spec... The rectifier is used for charging it just converts AC to DC in order to charge the battery. The stator generates an AC voltage. When it runs good and hot all day Is typically when they fail. I'm more familiar with Evinrudes. It's sounds like it might be bad, but I'd rule out everything else. Not fun to replace sometimes.
@cmiller4733
@cmiller4733 7 лет назад
If the stator is bad, could that cause me to not get spark to just 2 out of 4 cylinders? Or would that be powerpack? all coils replaced and plugs and wires.
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 7 лет назад
What outboard are you working on? Maybe, a bad stator can cause a lot of problems. Does your outboard have two power packs? If so swap them from side to side. So port to starboard and starboard to port. Then see if the problem follows the power pack. If it does then you know that's the problem. If it doesn't then you have to dig deeper.
@russg1801
@russg1801 7 лет назад
If the stator energizes the capacitor for two cylinders it's not bad. It would be the trigger assembly or the powerpack.

we have an 85 Force 125 that lost all spark today on the lake... I got it back home and tested the spark by sticking a Phillips screwdriver in the spark plug wire ends and holding it close to a ground. no spark in less I get it within a 16th of an inch or less from the ground. extremely weak spark not enough to jump the spark plug gap. since the weak spark is on all the cylinders at the same time it makes more sense that it's a stator then modules or coils correct?
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 7 лет назад
+gurn blanstein You are right, if the spark is extremely weak on all cylinders I'd go straight to the stator. It's obviously not generating enough electricity to create a good spark. If it was just one cylinder than it might be a coil or somthing, but since you have a weak spark on every cylinder it's probably the stator. Make sure you rule out any broken wires. The spade terminal connectors on Force electronics can break right where the wire connects to the connector and you would never even know unless you tug on them to see. Check every single one before you pull the flywheel!

I know it can be a PAIN! Sometimes you just have to take a break and then come back to it and test the stator one part at a time. Here is a link to a chart with the wire colors for your 1999 FICHT 200Hp stator: www.outboardignition.com/page40.asp Here is another chart: www.cdielectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/CDI-Electronics-DVA-Charts.pdf Be careful testing a stator on a newer motor like yours. Make sure the motor is not running if you are checking resistance values. You don't want to accidentally fry something. FICHT motors are not known for their reliability, but it's still an Evinrude! If you still cant isolate the problem you can buy a DVA adapter for your multimeter online and test the voltages. Here is a link to one: amzn.to/2loE5Fi Again, be careful and double check stuff before you hook up your multimeter if you test the voltages. IT CAN/WILL SHOCK YOU BADLY if the motor is running!!

Hey Matt, could you tell me can a stator keep your engine from reaching top speed? Thanks watched the video's just need to know if this is what I need to replace.
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 5 лет назад
Hey, a bad stator can cause you all kinds of trouble. If your stator is bad it can cause your spark to drop out at high speeds. When these things heat up they tend to fail when they are hot. I'd start with checking to see if your carb butterflies are opening all the way so that they are completely flat when you push the throttle all the way down. Most of the time the the throttle cable and linkages can be out of adjustment physically preventing you from reaching wide open throttle. Make sure that your trigger/timer base is moving freely too and fully advancing all the way against its stop. Whatever you do though, don't adjust anything until you read through a service manual for your motor. If you go adjusting stuff without knowing what you are doing, you can really mess up your controls or damage your motor.
@maxwebster7572
@maxwebster7572 5 лет назад
I think to answer that the amount of hours on the engine and rust on the stator would be an indicator. If I was keeping the motor and $250 keeps it running fine I would do the stator when it's benched, you can do rectifiers and modules easily when it's in the water at the lake. Cheap stuff gets changed first though. Not saying thorough diagnostics aren't in order like Matt said but I run 35-45 year old motors. $200 a year in parts is cheaper than a new motor to me.

It's unlikely, I'd replace the voltage regulator/rectifier first. It's what controls the voltage coming from the stator.
@DankFights
@DankFights 4 года назад
Matt's Shop thanks. I changed out the voltage regulator with a new one and still no change. Battery will charge to 15+ volts while full throttle. I disconnected the power wire from the voltage regulator for now so the battery won’t be charging while engine is running.
@MattsShop

If I remember correctly some outboards charge at a higher voltage like that. You should do some searching. It might be normal. Stators typically loose the charging voltage when they are bad. IDK if the voltage can increase if the charge winding is bad.

I have a 75 hp suzuki outboard motor but my stator is color differently 2 black 2 red and 1 yellow . 1 red wire is not connected to anything , how do i test it i think it is a 1987 suzuki . thanks advance for your help
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 3 года назад
You are going to have to look up wiring diagrams for that specific model. Basically, you have to test the Ohms of the similar colored wires.

@@MattsShop found out the problem , my main battery cables ground and positive shorted out in the middle since i saw smoke coming from battery terminal when cranking , disconnect both cable and separate them out , found insulation burnt in middle causing shorted and cause no spark , fix the cable and now fires up !

Hey Matt when we went out to the water the outboard still didn't seem like it was running right we had to leave bcuz it kept a starting then stalling so we managed to get it on the trailor and left when we got it home we ran seafoam through it and that didn't help I grabbed a pair of channel locks and pulled of each boot 1 cylinder: firing 2 cylinder: not firing 3 cylinder was firing what's causing the middle cylinder not to fire I cleaned the spark plug before we went out an the middle spark plug looks the same as when I cleaned it so I pulled the carb off and cleaned it threw it back on still don't here a difference removing that boot while its running so after that time pulled the plug and seen water droplets on just that plug

I have a 98 Force 120. Idle and up to 3/4 throttle it works fine. Charging output to battery is 14.2 V. At 3/4 and WOT, it starts kicking and sputtering, then shuts down. Starts right back up. Timing is fine, rebuilt carbs, new CCMS reeds, rebuilt fuel pump and getting spark..... I'm thinking about replacing stator and trigger. Will post back what I find. Info on these Force engines are rare.

@@toanle-md6yn Yes, it fixed my issue. These outboards were made by two different companies, depending on year. The later models were made by Mercury. They are simple units, but whoever designed the carbs should be strung up by their toes! Weak link on the Force outboards. Leak a lot.....

@@user-ym9wb2mk5e thanks for answered. What changed on the motor that make it run good or easy start? I replaced fuel filter, rebuilt fuel bump, installed fuel water separation. See that a little better than before.. But want to know exactly what change will make the best to get it easy start.
@user-ym9wb2mk5e
@user-ym9wb2mk5e 2 года назад
@@toanle-md6yn YW. I think the biggest issue is using genuine parts for the carbs and fuel pump. I learned my lesson using cheap amazon or Ebay kits. I do believe adding aftermarket Reeds and this trigger assembly helped a lot. Check your timing also, these models are a bit finicky. There's a good vid on YT about checking timing without it running full throttle. I'll see if I can find the link. If I had kept it, I would have checked into bypassing the fuel pump with a separate pump that you can find on Ebay. Mine was starving for fuel pressure at 3/4 throttle. Once I stopped boat, shut off, then started back up after priming it would run great.

If the stator is bad, I wish you were able to prove it with a meter. Just saying it is bad does not help us trying to figure out if we have the same problem. Did I miss something in the video?
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 6 лет назад
+Scot Caraway Yes, you missed the part where you check the Stator's resistance with the Ohm setting, and check it against a chart online. If it's within the range it's good. If it's not within the range or shows it's an open circuit. The thing's bad.
