In this video I Test and Replace the Transmission Output Speed Sensor on a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup, Code P0720. Check Transmission Fluid after Replacing Sensor.
Symptoms may include: Check Engine Light, ABS Light, or Brake Warning Light might be on in the dash. Speedometer not working. Not shifting correctly.

Do you know if this sensor part the same for 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Manual Shift Transmission and Automatic Shift Transmission? Most all of the videos are for automatics and the sensors say for automatics not manual. How do you find the sensor for the manual shift? Thank you

My 96 doesnt show any codes but the speedo bounces around and the transmission shifts funny sometime

anyone know what the pigtail for the transmission output speed sensor. I bought the sensor its self but it didn't come with a pig tail and i was assuming mine had one already but the entire pigtail is not hooked into the lume under the truck and I can seem to find the specific one for my pickup any help would be appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like u could test the sensor between pulling the plug and unscrewing the sensor. You wouldn't have to unscrew it first.

Does your surge when you have the cruise control on? Also mine has the ABS / brake light come on sometimes. If I shut off the truck and restart it the lights reset.

Jay Gould Sweet thank you. Doing this on my 00 dodge Dakota. Popped up with a P0731 code, incorrect gear ratio 1, and the sensors could be what’s causing this.

Actron CP9575 AutoScanner, Approx: $100.00, I bought it at Advance Auto. Walmart has cheaper ones for around $35, just depends on what options you want

He has dial set to Ohms; 20k, with black cable plugged in to COM.

Just switch the key to the on position back and forth 3 times. Then leave in the front position. It should display the code where the mileage is supposed to be. That's how I figured my injectors were bad. I still have the 0720 code, need to replace this sensor and I should be good. I have a 2001 ram 1500 5.2

Hey I don't have one of them scanners. Is there a way I can install a new sensor and erase the code without the scanner??

it "might" be possible by disconnecting the battery or pulling the ABS Fuse. If not, some auto parts stores will let you use a scanner to scan or reset codes.

To erase codes, remove both battery terminals and make them touch for about 20 minutes. Then reinstall and codes should be erased.

I replaced that & the abs sensor & cleared the codes. Once I try to drive it the check engine light comes back on. Do you have an idea why?

you might try cleaning the connectors on both sensors and reseating them to make sure there is a good connection. Make sure transmission fluid level is correct. Possibly Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (this was from another forum not sure how it affects the speed sensors)

I was chasing a check engine light on ‘99 1500 5.2L for a couple of years. Kept telling me O2 sensors but turned out the return hose from the pcv valve was blocked and gummed up not letting the blow by recirculate.

Have you checked the transmission output sensor? (See my other video), I had to replace it also.

Check Engine Light was ON, ABS Light was ON. Speedometer did not start moving until I was going about 10 MPH, after that it started to move (it would catch up to speed) and was accurate

At 1:35 I show it is bad with the ohm meter because there is no continuity
