Thank you for sharing this video, i’m going to use it to rule out where my small evap leak is coming from. Code P0442 on my a 2009 F150 5.4 3v. If you don’t mind me asking a few questions before I began testing I would welcome any feedback. Can I use a 9v battery or does it have to be 12v? Also my code reader stated the evap code was “permanent”. Will this disappear on its own once I locate and repair and install new part? Thanks again
I prefer using the car battery to test vs a 9volt battery. Even if it does work it’s not simulating a realistic operation where the 12v keep the coil engaged as the computer runs their test. As for your permanent code, the vehicle will retest for you as you put the car thru multiple drive cycles. Cycle meaning car on, drive certain conditions, car off. If your car runs the test and it passes back to back then it will self clear the code. Most prefer the clearing of the code for instant gratification and hope it doesn’t come back. Hope you find your solution.
@@waynesgarage8579 Thanks for replying so soon Wayne. Appreciate the advice and will keep that in mind. Have a 12v battery charging right now from my lawn tractor. I’ll use that. Testing is giving me a sense of control as well as a better understanding of how emissions operate. Hopefully I can have the entire system smoke tested after Christmas.
Very good video. Would this be the same procedure for the vent valve on top of the gas tank? And is there a way to decipher which wire is power and ground?
Thank you very much, if you’re bench testing the valve it doesn’t matter which wire is power or ground. As for the vent valve it should be normally free flowing and fully closed when activated. So concept of testing is exactly the same just reverse
@@waynesgarage8579 I’m going to attempt to test the vent valve while still on the truck I’m just not sure exactly where to put the jumper wires to make it happen.
