How To Test PVC Drain Pipes With Water

Why is water leaking from the roof all over the floor of this new building?
I’m getting my above ceiling rough-in inspections, and we’re required to use water to test PVC waste lines and vents.
Years ago, we filled these with 5 pounds of air, but that’s not allowed anymore because of the danger of the pipe exploding.
The plumbers put a boiler drain at the bottom of the vent pipe.
I connect one end of a washing machine hose to the valve and the other end to my cordless Milwaukee pump.
This pump actually has enough power to push water to the top of the pipe above the roof.
As soon as water starts to spill over, I shut the valve, then turn off the pump.
Now the pipe is filled right to the top.
When the inspector comes- they can shake the pipe- if water comes out they know it is full, and there are no leaks.
This way the only person that has to get on the roof is the roofer when he comes to install this boot to make everything watertight.
After I pass inspection, I attach a garden hose and drain the water out.
Earlier I was taking a test plug off at the other end of the warehouse and there was some water trapped that didn’t come out the drain - unfortunately I soaked the camera lady. ‪@hausplans‬

Most inspectors will allow 5psi of air for a test. Plumbing code book states "plastic pipe shall not be tested using air". Have had inspectors that will only allow water tests.
@hausplans
@hausplans Год назад
The county where I live still allows air testing. The city were this building is being built does not. The first plumbing inspection I had 5 pounds of air on it the drain lines and it failed. I just did a Google search. This is what I found in the 2018 international plumbing code. 312.3 Drainage and vent air test. Plastic piping shall not be tested using air. Also, found this For safety reasons, the PVC Pipe Association is adamant that PVC pressure pipe be tested with water only and that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD AIR TESTING BE PERFORMED ON PRESSURE PIPE I’m not saying I agree with any of this! Testing with water is a huge pain. The only thing I can figure out is that people accidentally put 100 psi or more on PVC drain lines thinking it’s the same as waterlines and causing them to blow up in rare cases. The inspector that failed mine said he had watched safety training videos where they showed PVC pipe blowing up like a grenade.
@ke6gwf

@@hausplansit's the same reason why air tanks and welding tanks and gas pipelines are hydrotested with water, water doesn't compress and store energy, so if a water filled pipe bursts, it just sprays a little bit of water out and then the pressure is gone, but with air you have an incredible amount of stored energy, and so when there is a failure it's a catastrophic failure.

5lbs of air definitely won't bust the pipe. I think water is better though because it's easier to detect a leak rather than watching for a pressure drop. You can't detect air leaks without bubblesoap or a pressure gauge, but you can detect water leaks nearly instantly.
@RankSevenYasuo
@RankSevenYasuo Год назад
You should be testing your vent and drain lines with 10ft of vertical head anyway. The reason you don't test with air and plastic is because of compression, you're basically making a bomb. Water is essentially incompressible and doesnt store nearly as much energy. Theres 100% very good reason we test with water. I'd rather have a 125lb test on with water than just 5lb with air.

@randycallow3736 Год назад
Your code is silly. Having the pipe dry and slightly pressurized is the way majority of outdoor fire sprinklers work and it's actually more safe not less. The air pressure ensures the integrity of the pipe and has the advantage of being 3 seasons, so in bitter winter conditions, unlike water the air pressure ensures the integrity and won't freeze. Best way to get pipe and system failures is to pretend that the pipe and pumps will act the same at low temperature.. below freezing and the system is going to fail, many plumbers and pipe fitters will leave a valve slightly open in winter so expanding water has somewhere to go

It wouldn't be exploding pipe you would have to deal with, it would be flying fittings on a failed fitting(lack of cement) randomly flying apart and at 5psi it would not have tooo much energy in most situations. Most low pressure plumbing inspections where we are are still air tests. HP testing is done with water, you do not want anything to come apart at 250 psi if there is a 3000 ft run of 8'' pipe charged with air..... that might be a bad time.
