In this video I show you how to throw a hook bareknuckle for street fighting.
Many fighters assume that the way to throw a hook is by either turning the fist in a vertical or horizontal position, but the truth is both can cause you to injure or break your hand.
You see most learn how to punch wearing boxing gloves and never learn the proper angle to turn their fists to strike with.
While most boxers will wear wraps when they shadow box all will still mimic the way they will punch while wearing gloves, so it does them no good and it trains them to strike at the wrong angle.
In a fist fight you must punch with a solid hand structure to avoid fractures and injuries, so understanding the angle with which to strike an opponent is very crucial.
So watch the video and learn how it should be done and protect your hands from injury.

I have not hurt my hands once since striking with the 3 knuckle diagonal landing ! . It is definately the strongest and most stable position for the hand and wrist to punch with ! I'm gratefull for your information thank you. I't would be good to see an overhand right clip just an idea .

I throw that overhand oldschool hook like a beast! So easy to whip it really fast when the hip is used. I always aim for just behind the ear. I got a huge smile on my face when you showed that technique. Thank you!

This was very interesting. I had no idea the diagonal punch was used in other arts besides Okinawan karate. Thank you for posting this. It was quite informative.

Daniel, thank you very much for sharing this information with the world. It's a pleasure to see this video and the others and discover so many things. Would you consider doing a tutorial on slipping? It's such a basic concept yet so neglected. I would love to hear your take on the subject.

thx for all those gold videos! i have a little question, can you land your diagonal hook with the first two knuckles ?
@BareFisted
@BareFisted 10 лет назад
Hey Olivier753, yes you can but you will need to corkscrew the fist as you strike with the two knuckles.

Awesome tutorial like always! Should i keep my fist diagonal in any other type of punch when fighting bareknuckle? In straights and uppercuts tc? thx:)
@BareFisted
@BareFisted 9 лет назад
Yes on straights, overhands, hooks, shovels, but not on uppercuts due to the fact that they come up straight. On the overhands just turn the fist over and strike with the two or all four knuckles.

I am a begginer. I tried bareknucke punching on the bag. I tried straight punches at the head height level, the way i did it was with horizontal fist, and i bruised a bit the skin at the middle knuckle of the index finger because my middle knuckle was hitting the bag before my back knuckle just as you showed on your video. Should i also use diagonal fist for straight punches to the head?
@BareFisted
@BareFisted 9 лет назад
If you are punching bareknuckled then yes use a diagonal fist to strike with. Also do knuckle push ups and finger tip push ups to help strengthen the fist and hand. Take your time, allow your fist and knuckles to get conditioned.

I avoided sport fighting as it never interested me and always studied and trained fighting arts in a combat-martial context with the purpose that it would be a real fight even with the possibility of having to maim or even kill an attacker. Sport fighting can and does teach someone a lot about fighting, even over training martially in many ways. I would never put it down in any way. But participating in sport fighting, like boxing, tends to be fighting battles of attrition and one in which I would also receive many blows to my head and body. But I don't like, nor do I ever want to be hit...ever. So boxing was out. I never liked boxing gloves on my hands anyway. And my goal is to take someone out without me getting a scratch whenever possible. But it is not possible to fully train and spar in a martial manner, so you cannot fully realize this approach to its end execution. Some assumptions are made in this regard. And we all hope we never have to face a situation where such a thing is necessary. Just look at the complete list of banned moves for MMA and you will see a few of my favorite things. How could I ever box or fight MMA when my instinct is for an eye, throat or groin strike? Just can't do it, doesn't register. Training for fighting as a sport stimulates no interest in me. This happened when my uncle who was in the military trained me starting at age 10 in some military fighting techniques coupled with a simple combat stand-up Silat and Kun Tao system he formulated when he spent many years in southeast Asia. Interest in sport fighting became irrelevant to me from this point on. I also was overwhelmingly successful at fighting off a few bullies during my school years and completely demoralized anyone with the simple system uncle had taught to me which made sport fighting and the prospect of my getting hit by exchanging blows with someone for status, trophies or prize money even more irrelevant. Part of this philosophy and practice was to not damage my hands in a street fight. Because that could end it for you. So I had minimized, even eliminated, punching to the head because of the tendency to break fingers or hands even when toughened or conditioned and instead used other techniques to strike the face and head. There is a backhand fist strike that I use when standing sideways to my opponent and it comes from my waist height. Amazing how, while trying not to telegraph your moves, how quickly you can strike a target with your hands in a low position versus up high in a defensive stance. Were there any boxers who felt that throwing punches from a low-waist position was quicker to the target than having their hands held up high? Because it is not a straight line technique, perhaps the hook is the more telegraphed of the boxing punches and it takes more time to arrive at the target than a straight line technique. But it would seem that it would deliver power and could contact the jaw joint, the side of the neck and the very thin temple bone area quite effectively. With that in mind, is it better to set up the hook with another punch first? Anyway, I can see from your videos part of the problem was that transferring gloved boxing techniques to the combat context was not practical. The gloves truly make a difference as to what you can get away with. But you have invigorated my interest in striking the head with the fist or knuckles. I made my own 15 pound maize ball yesterday and it is hanging outside to practice jab, cross, hook, uppercut, panther strikes to throat level, short arc whipping ridge hand, hammer fist and backfist strike, etc. I am using a pair of leather work gloves turned inside out to protect the skin in the beginning and they work well. I am still not quite sure that in a heated exchange with two attackers and a lot of movement that I would instinctively allow myself to use the fist or knuckles strikes to the head. Now there are some very affordable leather maize balls that can be bought for cheap online, but my ball is hanging outside under the overhang of my deck. But that can catch a little rain under there when the wind blows hard and could get a nice leather maize ball wet. So the rubber therapy ball stuffed with sand idea of yours is great because it is more durable to stand up to getting wet from time to time and not drying out and cracking. Thanks again. Will take some time to watch your other videos.

I'm glad you were able to make and use the maize bag, and thank you for your insights. As to getting comfortable striking bareknuckle to the head, try using a semi-soft leather medicine ball and have a partner hold it with two hands like a focus mitt and have him move around you and position the ball in different angles as you strike it. This will help to teach you at what angles to hold your fists as you strike, also it will build your confidence at striking something solid. Remember you can always strike the body, neck, arms, liver, kidneys, groin etc...
