I always knew porcelain was delicate when being handled but I never actually knew just how gentle you have to be with it to be able to make the form you wanted it to be, it’s always amazing seeing you work on stuff you haven’t worked on yet, I have so much respect for you

Your pieces are, in a very delicate way, straightforward and honest. Because of your great content, I started to watch other potters here on RU-vid, but I still like your style the most. It has an elegance and style that is easy on the eye, like a fine classic suit or a beautiful red evening dress.
@ragnkja
@ragnkja 2 года назад
I agree, and your comparison with a perfectly fitted suit or dress (a comparison I wouldn't have thought of myself) is very apt. The pottery, like those outfits, might look deceptively simple, but the thought and effort that is put into making everything fit together just right is what sets it apart from other pieces.

I’m so curious as to what you will do with the porcelain and how they’ll ultimately fire. There must be a reason you chose to return to the medium, can’t wait to see what you make!

Since today I am ill while watching this, I am only now wondering, how do you deal with illnesses/injuries and the timed nature of your job? Do you have anyone that can, for example, come in and spray water or put plastic on the stuff you have thrown, in case you get ill?

500k subs (congrats btw). 8k views after 14 hours. Florian, you release your video late on Sunday but lots of people go to bed early on Sundays for obvious reasons. Might it be better to schedule them for Sunday morning? You deserve more views than this.

Ooh nice more porcelain, this will be nice to watch. I'm curious about the thermal properties of porcelain vs stoneware with how long a mug retains heat

ive just gotten some old bone dry porcelain from the clay studio (currently drying after rehydrating it); lucky timing w this upload ! funnily enough, the potter who runs the clay department brought your channel up just last week :) could you trim using a bisque fired chuck ? or would it cause issues with the chuck drawing too much moisture from the piece ? and as always, thank you for another thorough, informative video !!

I would love it if you could give an approximation of thickness in millimeters. Also, please continue your content...it brings me much joy!
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 года назад
The final cups are about 4-5 m thick? Perhaps? It’s hard to gauge exactly but the glaze that goes on afterwards always adds some thickness back to the clay work. Thanks for watching!

I was trained with porcelain stoneware... so it's the best of both worlds. However, I now struggle with coarse clay with grog, and porcelain. I mean, stoneware is easy to throw... but I feel like finishing brings out th grog, and scratches the piece. I know I'm probably the only one to notice tho, but as potters, we are perfectionists. I accidentally bought 100 lbs of porcelain recently... and I never realized that trimming was such a major part of the process. Great video! I noticed that you use a lot of plastic. Do you not have a damp room/box?

Can you see yourself ever loving to work with porcelain as much as you clearly love working with stoneware? If so, can you foresee a time when you would only work exclusively with porcelain? Thanks so much! I always learn a great deal from your videos and recommend them to my fellow students in my pottery courses!

at 3:59, you mention blasting the porcelain with “paint stripper” to dry it out. can you elaborate on this a bit more? or recommend further reading? thanks :)
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 года назад
Essentially I mean just using a heat gun, (paint stripper) to heat the piece up briefly, firming up the pot so it has more strength, that way there's less deforming that can potentially occur.
