How to tie feather rigs or saiki rigs for mackerel, pollock, saithe, cole fish and cod. Link to Photo-guide of the rig and knots homeluremaking.blogspot.co.uk/... Link to Blog: homeluremaking.blogspot.co.uk/
Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, ru-vid.comUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
Good video. No endless preamble, just straight into a straightforward explanation with precise measurements. A nice clean step by step instruction. Brilliant, thank you very much.
Thank you Paul.. I'm in California (Monterey Bay Area) and have caught TONS of Mackerel jigging off the piers and wharfs. I followed your tutorial, but used a red color size 6 hooks, cut the ribbon in half lengthwise to make it thinner (to account for the smaller hooks), added some red ribbon, put 5 hooks to a rig, and added a glow in the dark bead on the snood. These lures are AWESOME. I can catch Mackerel and White Croaker without bait and I out fish everybody else, even those using bait and fishing right next to me. There using store bought sabikis and adding small pieces of shrimp. Thank you for all your great tutorials and for enhancing my love and experience of fishing!
Cannery Row set in Monterey Bay is one of my favourite books. I remeber when i used to think that store bought rigs must be the best, but that was a long time ago. I think the advanatge of making my own tackle is that willingness to learn and spend that extra time thinking about how a knew peice of tackle works on the peir rather than just buying something and tying it on. Good luck, say hello to Doc
I am glad you found the vid easy to follow, I tested the rigs when I lived on the island of mull and fished amongst the rocky, kelpy shores and reefs. What makes the biggest difference to the rig is that slightly longer bottom section that often keeps the lowest hooks just out of the weed. As for Drummore all I can say is you lucky man, and if I am ever up that way you can be sure I will give you call.
I made these lures based on Mr. Adams' instructions, I tried them on gulf coast here in florida. The problem I had was how to stop, had 15 Spanish mackerels and cooked them in olive oil, my wife was very happy. Thanks Paul. More power to your videos an creativity.
Great video mate, once I got used to the knot tying I was well away, made a few now in different colours, so for anybody struggling to get the ribbon, the Card Factory have it various colours 10m for 39p and Tescos have the Silver Holographic 20m for £1.25, Tight lines everyone.
just wanted to thank you paul I made these for this last weekend and they worked great. I caught more fish on these lures than I did my jig also I caught more than one at a time totally worth trying. Mine didnt hold up to long I bought most of my stuff from the dollar tree the ribbon didnt last however it was so cheap and well worth the time. I super glued my ribbon together because only one side had the holographic image.
Beautifully explained, easy to follow steps- Am off fishing in Cape Verde in April, Norway in July and Mexico in September- should be able to use those in all 3 places. Many Thanks for a very informative video, your abilities more than compensate for your crap spelling! Lol. Best Fishes!
if you are happy using thread the great, i used tape because like me its cheap and it adds a bit of depth of colour plus it hold everything together for those days when i find my hands have been replaced by a couple bunches of bananas. cheers Paul Adams
I think on the newer videos they are a little easier to see as they have a blue background. Or if you follow the link to my blog there is a photographic illustration with text explaining the knots. I must point out that i still cannot tie my own shoe laces properly but i managed yesterday to catch 35 mackerel on rig i had tied myself Good luck
Now you are making me jealous with all that talk of boats and fishing, the last time i was in a boat doing a bit of fishing was on this Video.I think I need to make a boat and get back out to sea instead of chasing pike in ponds. Good luck from a current armchair sea angler it would be great to see some pictures. Cheers Paul Adams
Hi Paul, these are great lures. When I'm assembling mine I reverse the direction they're tied to the main line so that they are held away from the line by the stiffness of the snood. Gravity holds the hooks pointing down still. It just gives a more open display. Regards, Peter.
lol, very good Paul, I took a photo of a tied trace and the colours on the holographic ribbon is quite stunning. I shore fish too so nice to freeze some fresh mackerel down. I need a good spinning outfit as a 12' beachcaster was hard work. Thanks again Paul, its pizza time now.
the only trouble with humbrol model or enamel paint is it is a bit thin and would probably just soak in to the knot on the lure. Household paint like emulsion is acrylic but i have used thick gloss paint, liquid paper and permanent maker for the pupils before today and they all lasted. Normally i apply the eye spots with panel pins or tack heads instead of a brush. Good luck
I watched it last night an went straight on ebay bought what I need but I couldnt wait so I just been to shop an got holographic ribben and some ultra tape couldnt get hold of insulation tape but it seems to be working im just finishing my first one and have made lures for another cheers again for the vid bud
that is great to know someone else is tying their own. Was it easy enough to follow? i am so used to tying them i have forgot what it was like to learn.
Hi Paul Adams!!! that's a nice tutorial, i'll try them next week on vacation! You're doing a incredible job! Have fun! Best regards, from Guadalajara, Jalisco, México!
it can get a bit mad when you hit a shoal, or a place where fish are holding up, i think the strangest i had was three species on at one time. I am glad they worked for you. Thanks
Another Cracking Video From The "Homemade Fisherman" I Gave It A Go! I Only Made 2 But It Was Great Fun, Although I Have To Say "Not As Easy As You Made It Look Paul", "Great Work, Well Done" 10/10
Hi Paul, An excellent tutorial.Thank you. Iam going to use your rig to fish the Cape Cod Canal...Massachusetts ,USA..when the Stripers are chasing the mackerel !!!
Thanks Paul or Carmen or what ever you like to be called on the web, i don't judge we are all just fisher persons, it is great to here that they worked for you, i will have to be getting myself back to sea soon it has been far too long since i have had Pollock and chips or pollock in Provencal bread crumbs with Aioli, smoked pollock, battered, fried, thia glazed with jasmine rice, or fish curry, i used live on pollock and coleys, those were the days, better get back to my pot noodle, cheers
I went on Amazon US and typed in, silver holographic ribbon it came up with 100yds for $1.75, but if you have a greeting card shop, ballon, or florist local they may have it, in the UK you can by it from Asda which is the british part of Wall-mart. Cheers and good luck
Hi Paul, tnxs for a really easy to follow video on mackerel tying. I have been tying lures for a while, sometimes they work and sometimes fall apart, but your method is so good and you make it so easy to assemble If ever you find yourself i Drummore S.W Scotland look me up for some boat fishing Regards Harry
Thank you for instructional video. I’d like to say that these really work well. The only thing I would change is the color of the ribbon. I used these for the first time out in cape Cod bay in April earlier this year and I made them with 2 different color ribbons. I gave my friend the one that had the gold colored ribbon and he definitely outfished me with it. I was fishing with the silver holographic ribbon sabiki and doing really well but the fish really wanted the gold color
what a great video thanks for making this and sharing with us... and of course this makes fishing affordable. especially for young boys with not a lot of money. As a lad my pals and I would fish for Mackerel (spinning rods not floats) off the rocks of East Anglesey at White Beach. we would use seagull feathers. and sometimes use the silver paper from cigarette packs. with up to 6 hooks... nothing like the thrill of 3 or 4 mackerel taking the lure at the same time. around dinner time I would go around the houses and offer my catch for sale... I charged 1/- a fish or 3 for half a crown... I would keep the fish alive to show my customers that they were fresh... as an aside shop bought spinners cost 10 pence (old money) so you can see the attraction of being able to make your own feather lures again, thanks for sharing. I like that you ended your vid by a your guys in the boat teaching your grandson? how to do it. wonderful
i was planning to get down to white beach this summer, on those rocks into deep water, i have never been but someone in the tackle shop recommended it, thanks
so you should know that out about 50 yards on the east side of the bay (white beach is a small bay about 300 yards across) is sand.. I know this because you can catch flat fish.. we used sea worms for them.. or mussel meat.. there are also plenty of dog fish and occasionally bass.. on the other side of the bay (walk through the old quarry works) there are large rocks which at low tide snag you up... so we would spin high up to avoid the snags then on particular low tides we would venture down into amongst the rocks and retrieve all the spinners etc that had been snagged on the rocks. finally keep a sharp look out for gold coins from the Royal Charter wreck of 1859.. which still turn up... if you go to white beach please film... I live in St Louis USA and would love to see some fishing from the ricks... thanks :-)
I make rigs sort of the same way for Bluegills,Crappie, etc. here in the states. But I don't use a loop knot to attach it to the swivel or swivel to main, they're both clinch knots as I don't care much for those loop knots and I don't add the swivel to the rig,it's always attached to my main and I just pull out the rig and clinch it to the swivel.Less that needs to go into the ziploc as I don't usually lose the swivel either as my main is #10 and the rig is either #4-6-8 for those fish. There is another way it could probably done but I haven't tried it.Tie 1.5-2" (38-50mm) long dropper loops along the length of your line, cinch tight then cut the one end of loop and it'll give you a tag length 2x the loop length.Snell that to your lure.
if you watch the end of the video you will see a tray of fish that we caught using these rigs and two rods in the space of ten minutes. If the fish are there then yes they work.
Inadvertently you have show me and amazing knot floor to braid carp angler I have shown love it lure angler will to it so strong it so easy your feather figer of 8 follow the holes uni in the braid lighter the braid more turns star man keep on
great video, as for the hollow ribbon for the guy in the us. micheals, hobby lobby, walmart, party city, pick a place...lol thanks again paul for this video.
Im gonna try this in a week they look delicious, do u think adding a stripe of bait to the hook like calamari or cuttlefish would make them even tastier or it would affect the way they move in the water too much?
oh yes many years ago my oldest son introduced me to the marvelous bread fish sometimes i find myself singing the tune for no reason. Thanks for reminding me i will be singing all of tomorrow.
you could do. you would just have to use a standard whipping or snell knot, it can be a bit harder but once you've got through a few thousand of your hooks you will be an expert.
great video Paul ive been tying mine in 60lb line as I do most of my fishing from beaches and cast them out a long way so I needed the extra security with stronger mono.
I don't tend to cast anything past three ounces and two is the norm, but i was suprised on Chesil Beach how many people were casting feathers with big 6ounce leads and 13ft plus beach casters. It made me realise i am a very lazy fisherman, but some times i wish i had reach of those heavier weights.. Origionally i used these rigs for boat fishing, and about 35lb was idea for retrieving them from kelp. Hope you are having some good luck with your rigs, i feel like i need another trip to the beach soon. Thanks
Black, I use dubble black salmon hooks for mackrell. No shiny stuff. i have tried alot of things for mackrell but a tackle of 3-8 black regular fly hooks for salmon is amazing, tie them up with 15-25 cm between them and you will be amazed! :D
Tied a few last night, went out mackerel fishing this morning at 6am and had a bucket of mackerel plus 4 Pollock, would I recommened them oh yeah, I came home and tied another 4 rigs. Im paul, wife does not fish lol. Superb rig, 5 other anglers fishing 1 Pollock between them. Many thanks Paul (wink).
love your work i have a question when you actually use this rig do add terminal bait on the rig or just drop it down as it is? also any specific action?
just a weight on the end, and then jig it up and down if you on a boat or for shore fishing see Fishing and Cooking Mackerel on Chesil Beach this is how i use them, thanks
great video, very detailed explanation, I'm a newbie to the whole fishing scene, at the risk of sounding a bit daft, could you tell me what size fishing rod to use with those rigs you are making when fishing for mackerel?
thanks lots Paul. uni knot it is. at least a couple of times I was told its a fishermans knot. I just got back into landbased fishing, and so I am relearning.
Just discovered - your vids Paul - they look very good. Off to loch Sunart for Easter - as a beginner - I was looking just for tips on what sort of simple configurations spinners, feathers etc are applied - never considered making my own. Thanks
***** Ha! no thats why we're going to Strontium. Just shore fishing Paul - I've read some depressing things about what's available in Easter - but we'll (wife+I) give it a go!
I lived on al ittle island off Mull for about five years a spent a lot time fishing from a small boat and the shore. Just going through my old log i was still catching around easter but any quantity or large fish, mainly coleys and pollock on feather from a boat. Shore wise where i lived there was no real depth of water to cast into you are talking 5mtrs at the most, so on the top of high tides i fishes one spot with feather rig the same as in the chesil beach video this was a reef and i could pull a few collies off it. The other method i used when i wanted to just go enjoy myself was lrf fishing, i made my lures from bit rubbish, ealstic bands and stuff, but just before eveing a lot small fish come into shelter and i would often great laugh picking off tiny fish. I think to feather fish at that time of year from shore the most important thing i would look for is depth of water close in (6m-10m plus) and some kind of reef. If you can't find that then maybe a bit of lrf fishing in amongst the kelp of a jetty of pier. I would buy one of those Ecogear lrf kits and getting the lightest rod out. I am really sorry that when i lived up there i did not spend more time on the old lrf. Or make up some tiny size 8 hook sabiki rigs and use a very small drop shot weight. If you are going over to Tobemorry ask in the tackle shop. Good luck
***** Thanks for that Paul! Going to print that off. We usually spin (we're beginners) - would this be any use do you think? Off to research LRF Cheers
there is no reason why this could not be used as a Patterson rig without the hook dressing. I wonder if it might be better with a different hook knot to make it easy to slide bait onto the hook such as worms.
