Learn how to train a fearful dog and what to do do help a dog with fears overcome them.
Training a fearful dog requires a very specific strategy and if you don't know what you are doing you can actually make your dogs fear worse!
The first step to training a dog to not be so fearful is identifying why the dog is fearful in the first place.
Once you know what triggers the fear in the dog you can begin to desensitize your dog to that fear.
Some dogs are afraid of people, other dogs, vacuums, cars, skateboards, they can really develop a phobia of anything.
In this video tutorial of how to train a fearful dog you will learn the steps to help your dog overcome their fear of what ever they might be scared of.

Hi..just adopted a 5 yr old Papillon. 1st 2 yrs of his life he lived in a puppy mill. Then went to rescue..then private home..given up again to rescue. Now I have him. He is very fearful especially of sudden hand movements. I have been working with him using your method and he is slowly improving. Thank you for this vid!!

I found you're channel when I was having a problem with my new chihuahua play bites all the time and that video helped me and he's not doing play bites any more and now that he's 17 months old I noticed that he's becoming skittish and get so afraid to things that he sees moves to the point that he would run and jump to get away from that object. It's affecting him more because he couldn't sleep right away and it's causing him to sleep all day and tired. I will definitely try this to my chihuahua. I wanted him to be confident and be brave even if he's that small of a dog. I know it's hard not to baby them but I would stop doing that because it's not helping him. Thank you for this video

It's the same with trauma therapy for people. If you force, you reinforce. It has to be voluntary. So with dogs we don't force, we just wait calmly. Then continue as [if] it's no big deal. I can confirm this from experience. My dog has a lot of fear and anxiety and this approach is the only one that's yielded progress. Thank you for the guidance 🙏

My dog was also scared of everything, even of me (and I am a sweet owner) ... she was not aggressive but she cramped, licked her lips, blinked her eyes and didn't dare look at me. She was so stressed! I learned this technique from Joke Monteny, a Belgian dog trainer (I am from Belgium) and now we are a few months later and she has become a completely different dog, she asks my attention, comes to lie next to me, she even enjoys a pat! I train every day with my dog and I am surprised at what she is all learning and how smart my dog is, I learned "dog language" and had to unlearn our "human language", not talk to her, not look at her, not touch her, it is against our nature but a dog will not hug another dog either, they do not do this, this is not the way a dog treats other dogs. So I speak her language, I am calm, have patience and train with tasty sweets!

You made some really good points. The only thing is you cannot reinforce fear. It's a feeling. Just like if someone were to comfort you or even give you somethings nice if you were scared you would not be more scared of that thing.

I have a GSD from a rescue and he is super fearful and shy. We think he was beaten by the previous owner and attacked by other dogs because if someone yelled at him on accident he would pee himself and let the other dogs dominate him (we have three including him) We have been socializing him and the other dogs have been teaching him to play, but I’m trying to find ways to get him to want to learn to train. He has a ton of energy and I’m trying to find ways to work that energy out and work his brain. Any tips?

My 17 week old Rottweiler puppy is really scared of traffic. He’ll start walking on the footpath and then after one car goes by he’ll sit and then the second car will go by and that’s when he just wants to go back and get back home. I take him for a walk to my local parks in my car all the time and it working amazing with socialisation and all but this traffic situation is so difficult and I don’t want him to keep this going and become a scared dog...would this work the same with traffic or would you say add a few different things when I’m getting him comfortable with this?

my dog is really scared of loud noises ever since he was a puppy. he's so strong, he'll walk really good with me but a loud noise like someone slamming a door etc he flips out and tries to run the other way and very strong he almost pulls me over..but i never know what he will act extreme with, its different all the time..walking with him at the park is very stressful..i have to stop constantly and wait for him to start walking with me again..i reward him when he starts moving forward again and he feels like he accomplished something..its hard when its every loud noise is a trigger.. i learned something here..about not shortening the leash and saying "its ok" when i see something that is going to scare him.

@@heidihgreen mine is the same - she was thrown off a bridge in Romania and starved for a week until rescued...no wonder the world is scary for her and for a lot of dogs. But it is sad that I can't walk her; she just freezes and pulls away when we get near the front door. She is scared of EVERYTHING - even the wind outside. Scared of everyone - But very sweet to me and my son...like yours she isn't aggressive just retreats and hides, shaking. I'm researching building dog confidence but am not too optomistic...

My dog is 2yrs old we rescued her from a family when she was 8 months old. She wasn’t potty trained, she has food aggression, she wasn’t socialized at all. We got her potty trained, but her food aggression has been a struggle. Now we have a new puppy and she is not happy. She growls and snaps at the puppy....my 2yr old dog is a toy poodle mix, the puppy is a golden doodle, and I have an Australian Shepherd mix who he is fine with. The Australian Shepherd reacts to puppy like you explained with the puppy license....but the 2yr old toy poodle has lashed out and went after puppy. So I intervened. What would you recommend us to do?

Should I leash him close to me ? Is it necessary to not allow him to walk front of me at the street? What should I do with water, I know he really love water, he usually go to the river by himself, but when we are at the lake where are a lots of dogs and people, he doesn't want go came in..I really wanted him to came in by himself, how I should do it? He also barking when we are home, and he wanted to protect his place..its really weird, because if anyone try to come in he run away..I don't want to him barking, because of the neighbours. I have a question though, I am taking in a rescue that is fearful of ME. So how do I handle this? I am not using a baby voice or reinforcing their behavior, I’m just there. Now my dog is nice to me and 80% nice to my boyfriend. The issue is that 20% of the time for no reason my dog snaps at my boyfriend. How can I get my dog over that?. The 2nd issue is that when my dog eats she is cool with my touching her food but if another person touches the food she snaps at them, How can I fix that?.

My dog is terrified of storms, he shivers and pants and finally will go under the bed. Is it ok to leave him under the bed till he feels safe to come out? We check on him and tell him the storm is over he will come out on his own when he’s ready. Or I will put him on the bed and distract him by scratching his belly while I read. He is at a healthy weight and we don’t give too many treats he considers a few pieces of dog food a treat.

I hate how scared my dog is :( It's worse at night and it was WAY worse when I first got her. But it's still tough. When she has to go potty before bed, if people walk by, she's terrified! We go to the dog park most days of the week so she's a lot better with dogs. And she's better with loud noises, big machinery, random objects. One day we saw a bike. She got scared of it and ran away. Almost got hit by a box truck. I'm trying to socialize her but at the same time I don't want her to just go up to random people.

I'm in desperate need of someone's help! My 9 month old Rottweiler puppy needed his nails cutting so we paid for a groomer to come over and clip them, however the women never introduced herself to my dog and just walked up, grabbed his paw and started clipping them (bare in mind my mum who he is very dependent on was out at the time and I was watching him and this was his first ever time having a groomer clip his nails) he kept trying to pull away and started to growl. The women then tried to continue and he ran away into the living room and she went out into her van and brought a muzzle back and attempted to put it on his face which he disliked a lot and tried nipping at her and growling and running away. I calmed him down and attempted to put it on myself and he didn't let me so I gave up and told the groomer that it's probably best to wait for my mum to return as she would be able to put it on him but she didn't listen and tried to put it on his face (while he was in the corner) and he continued to growl however she didn't back off she carried on and therefore he bit her arm (not breaking skin but ripping her top) me and my mother are now afraid that because he has had a bad experience with groomers he's going to become aggressive towards them and therefore never being able to be groomed and not knowing whether or not a groomer will even attempt to groom him. If anyone has any ideas on how to help then it would be so so appreciated!! I don't think it would be right to euthanise him as it wasn't unprovoked, he was just afraid.
@sabrinamyneni8028
@sabrinamyneni8028 6 лет назад
It would be so wrong to even consider euthanasia for that lady’s poor behavior. Your dog tried to tell her multiple times that he was uncomfortable and she did not listen. Talk to a trainer in your area, show him nail clippers, handle his paws and nails while holding clippers, slowly desensitize him.

Adventures with turtle spy Animals and Lps I totally agree with everything Sabrina said. Until I had my children, I was by nature a very timid person (I'm not saying you are). I'm now a grandmother with a 22yr old granddaughter & thru the years I became very outspoken when it comes to children (and animals). When you see that your puppy/dog/cat is treated without care & consideration for the puppy's feelings/fear/well-being, firmly tell the groomer, "that's enough for today". Even if you have to pay her, your puppy's well-being and future interaction with groomers, vets, etc. and her trust in your protection is worth it. Also, I wouldn't leave the dog with a groomer, I would stay & keep an eye on the situation until both you & the dog feel comfortable with the groomer. And by the way, when we would take our German Shepherd for her shots, our vet would trim the nails for free (she's a laid-back country vet & she's got that special loving-care touch).
@jessica6967
@jessica6967 6 лет назад
There are fear/force-free groomers (if you google it, you can search for one in your area). It may mean initially paying for sessions and not having any grooming done, but it will really help your dog and his fear. Biting is serious and that ignorant woman could have reported your dog and got him put to sleep, depsite it obviously being 100% her fault. You can get sandpaper on a board and teach your dog to scratch at the board using postitive reinforcement (treats), to help keep his nails maintained in the mean time. Go as slowly as your dog requires. You want to touch his paw with the clippers at the end of the session? Well, you dog was only comfortable being in the same room as the visible clippers, so long as you aren't handling them. That's fine and you will still make progress. If you go super slowly, but respect your dog's limits, they will feel safer and will naturally speed up the pace at which they're making progress. Good luck. (also, a dremmel might be better, as if you quick his nails, you risk losing a lot of progress and trust. Still desensitise to the clippers, to help him overcome his fear, just avoid using them.)

It always surprises me how people that work in an area where they will see a lot of dogs don’t introduce themselves. It’s so basic, and necessary with shy and timid dogs. And then they get, in my case, annoyed and upset that the dog won’t let them give a pat. Then I can feel their judgment that my dog is timid, like I’ve done something wrong. I wrk incredibly hard with to get them to the stage that they know that if someone introduces themself it’s okay. All they had to do is introduce themselves and the dog would warm up to them, they’re timid they need to approach in their own time. Also if you slowly introduce him to walking on pavement (concrete), if you can and it’s in your area I would recommend that, the nails with become ground down and they will build up callouses as well this has worked for all my dogs.

I adopted a 2 year old dog. He used to live with his mother, 2 brothers and 2 other dogs. The owner put them in adoption because they were too many dogs for them. When we got home, he started to acknowledge the house and after that, he has been really fearful. He just wants to be on a corner and when I try to approach he starts growling and has tried to bite me and my husband. What can I do? How many times should I try to approach him?
@Lantronixxx
@Lantronixxx 4 года назад
Hi Claudia, I am by no means a dog trainer or even close. But I did adopt two litter mates (puppies that have been together since birth) and it sounds like your fur ball is experiencing litter mates syndrome. It means he’s not confident/normal self when he’s not around his brothers/parents. I think: you should give him time to adjust to the change (no hugs, kisses, cuddle sessions yet but do throw either kibble or small treats close to him to defuse him/reward when he gets close to you). Also, take him on walks (get him used to hearing the leash clicking and knowing what it means), the first walks I wouldn’t work on leash pulling or any commands, just follow him around and let him sniff sniff sniff. Let him know you are on his side and want him to be happy :) Good Luck!
@Lantronixxx
@Lantronixxx 4 года назад
Those are the first steps to get him comfortable at home, a big big big part of litter mate syndrome is socializing beyond his own home. Once he trusts you and acts relaxed around you, you must let him interact with other dogs. Take him to doggie classes, doggie parks (if he’s not aggressive towards other dogs), people parks with dogs, etc. You want him to build confidence in himself when around other dogs/people. Depending on how he acts around other dogs (fear or aggression) I would apply techniques from these type of videos. As with anything new, lots of treats and lots of praise for every wanted action; I would ignore/redirect unwanted behaviors with simple whistles or clicks and walk a little to distract them. Do not corner your doggie or try to touch him for now since he has done air snaps (air snaps are not bite bites just threats), simply toss treats at him so he knows you’re a food source
@Lantronixxx
@Lantronixxx 4 года назад
Oh one more thing, have him sleep on a sweaty shirt from you or husband (whoever is going to spend more time with him) that way he becomes familiar with your scent and can feel more at ease around you, if you have any other questions you can ask me (I’m not a trainer but I’ve been doing a lot of research)

As a dog trainer myself, this guy lost me when he said you should never comfort a fearful dog. He is 100% wrong!!! Fear is an emotion and you can not reinforce an emotion. Comfort your dog all you want! You will not make the dog more fearful! This guy needs to go back to school and keep his education up to date.

@supernova6864
@supernova6864 6 лет назад
I would say the same way. Start far away from the sound so it's not loud at all. Or turn the volume down if possible. Reward when the dog stays calm with the sound. If he still reacts in a fearful way to the sound it's probably too loud. Remember, dogs can hear way better than us, so if you can't hear it, your dog probably can. Your final goal is the same as mentioned in the video: as soon as he hears the sound, he should look at you for a reward. Also mentioned in the video: take it slow!
