One of your best videos I've seen. Really liked the theme. Great combination of entertainment (very funny intro), along with education - clearly and accessibly explained while still including the specifics and scientific details (HR/lactate). Fantastic balance of very serious training while having fun and not taking yourself too seriously!

Thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate that. It’s a hard balance but that’s what I was trying to do. Be useful but with some entertainment value too. It means a lot that your feedback is so positive. Thank you for taking the time to comment. It’s one of my favourite videos too so I’m glad it’s going down well.

Twice per day running has been proven to increase mitochondrial efficiency. This is true even when compared to training in a glycogen depleted state once per day. So there is something special about twice a day training. Thanks for this video.

Hi Matt - very nice video. I use the lactate pro 2 and have taken (it seems like) hundreds of samples and technique is key. Ear lobe sampling is much better (a small mirror is needed if doing it yourself). If sampling from finger, use index, middle or ring finger, over the mid to outer aspect. Key issue is skin/hand temperature - in cold weather circulation is relatively poor and readings will be high. Unless it’s a fairly warm day, as a minimum you need to wear gloves. Indoors, if you have a fan/door open to the garage, skin surface can be surprisingly cool and again sampling not very reliable. Also - when you stab yourself, wipe away the first bleed with tissue, allow further small bleed then apply the monitor stick. I also tend to avoid arm/hand with watch/heart rate monitor attached just in case it is slightly tight and slows venous return. Main advice - Ear lobe works best. Hope that helps.
@TheWelshRunner

Thank you so much for this amazing and detailed reply. I will take all of that great advice on board. Kelly said someone might comment and help with the lactate reading issue but I wasn’t expecting such a useful reply so I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video and I’ll keep you updated with any success with the lactate meter in future vlogs. Cheers.

Enjoyed the video and insight into how and what the experts do. So thanks for taking the time to create and publish. One thing I would add, perhaps for consideration for future subject matter, is the subject of rest and recovery. As runners we tend to seek out that killer workout which is going to take us to the next level but neglect what we should be doing on easy/recovery days. There are plenty of vlogs out there indicating how fast to do this or how many reps at x pace. In this video clearly there is total focus on how they should perform when undertaking the intense sessions, so I’m guessing equal discipline is applied to rest and recovery/easy runs. I think it would helpful therefore, to understand this aspect more, particularly how do their easy runs relate, in terms of pace/hr/distance to the faster activities. Indeed gaining an insight into how you perform these sessions would also be of interest.

i’ve got a lactate pro 2 and also did sports science at uni so have had a bit of experince with it and i think its surprising how slow you have to go to keep the lactate under threshold. I think looking at how the heart rate was creeping up in your reps you were probably over lacate threshold. Also i would suggst doing a ramp test to really define your lactate turn point as this could be higher than 4, for example mine is aroud 5mmol.
@TheWelshRunner
@TheWelshRunner 3 года назад
Thanks Joe. I do agree that you have to go slower than you expect but this was very comfortable running for me. I have had testing under lab conditions and my turnpoint is 181bpm and around 4. These were all considerably lower HR than that. My HR came down in the final rep. I’m confident that this was under threshold especially if you take a look at my other recent activities. Of course I’m talking turnpoint as I’m aware that in academia lactate threshold can refer to what I would commonly refer to as aerobic threshold. I’d love to get retested in a lab when lockdown ends. Thanks for your comment. I love discussing this stuff.
@joeskipper91
@joeskipper91 3 года назад
@@TheWelshRunner was the lab done on a treadmill? Not sure if you used disinfectant wipes but when I do it I wipe my finger, prick my finger and then wipe it again, squeeze the blood and get the sample. This seems to work really well. also try a ramp rest around the lake, would make for a good video if nothing else. maybe start at 7mpm and run a lap 15 seconds a mile faster and take lactate after each loop. Ideally 2-4 minutes of running between each sample.

I got the impression that Kelly rather liked it!! The rest of the video was really informative and enjoyable. I can't imagine doing doubles yet let alone double workouts, but it's good to know the levels of training you can aim for as long as it's built up to gradually and planned carefully and strategically. The Anger Briston's (how they'll henceforth be known) training is very reminiscent of Chris Boardman's, clever & very methodical. I remember seeing a doc about the hour record where he talks about finger pricking after intervals being the best way to measure lactate but too much of a pain! It's worth remembering they are all middle distance runners and while they're very good at cross country, not that unusual at 8 to 10km XC for good milers, I think they'd have to strip back those recoveries and bump up the long runs to excel at 10km and above. You can bet your bottom dollar Joshua cheptegei ain't stopping after 80mins of a long run.

@TheWelshRunner
@TheWelshRunner 3 года назад
Thanks Moneil. Good that you enjoyed the video. Yes I think sub-threshold and anaerobic threshold work is excellent for progressing athletes without the extra stress of VO2max work. It certainly gets results when used at the right times. The hills ensure they are still working at faster paces, but without the stress of running very fast on the flat. It will make them powerful and help with their economy. It will provide many benefits, making them fitter, and prepared to run fast when the track season comes round.

Good effort... one thing. I think you are doing the recovery of those 6' reps too short. They are more resting 2' between reps. Check Goran Wimblad's video (swedish guy living in Norway). I have also read their second sesh of the day can also be 20x400 (30" off) at around their 8k effort.

Yes they have a few sessions they rotate. The 20x400 off 30s short recoveries is one I also want to try. I love Goran’s video and linked to it in my description. However, I believe the recoveries to be 1 minute and not 2 minutes but I have seen no definitive answers in the research papers. Are you familiar with Kalle Berglund the Swedish 1500m runner? He also follows this training schedule now and he did a presentation stating the recoveries should be 1 minute for the 6 minute efforts. Google the presentation as it’s really interesting.

Matt can you have a look at some of the links you added. They aren't working.

Thanks for the heads up. They are all working my end. Are you based in the UK? It may be that they are not working internationally. I am not sure. Try searching Leif Inge Tjelta on Researchgate.net. Hope that helps. 👍

@@TheWelshRunner Matt, very much UK based, not withstanding the irridentist tendencies in parts of London and the South East. Interestingly some of the links that went nowhere are now working, but the links to your excellent you tube series are not working out at my end- one says can't open link and the other says link unavailable. Also the link to your page says page not abvailable although I found the coaching pages through other routes. I must sound like a real pedant, but I'm not. Devoted watcher of your channel. I've filled in details in the hope that you might be able to coach. Fingers crossed at this end.

How long are you supposed to be able to hold threshold for?? Is it like half marathon pacing or shorter??

What watch you are wearing

pretty nutty that they "monitor" you close enough to know if you've gone out for two workouts in a day... i would wear a disguise lol

Maybe my moustache was my disguise. They don't monitor it all that stringently but they are trusting us to follow the guidelines as a collective effort to help bring down the covid cases.

Talk about bamboozling your audience. Most of your subs don’t even own a HR monitor. Remember most people follow you because you helped a guy finish a race not because they want to know what your lactate level . Keep it simple .

If you don’t like the videos you are free to not watch them. I’m making a video on how the Ingebrigtsens train. So why would I omit HR when they use that religiously. If it’s too confusing or complicated for you then that’s fine. There’s plenty of other videos or books you can start with.
