I like to think Sisyphus' punishment was Persephone's idea specifically. "Tell you what, I'm a reasonable goddess. You roll this rock to the top of that hill, and you can live out the rest of your days free from death." Then every time the rock falls, Hades always seems to hear a dark chuckle coming from Persephone.

As far as creators from OSP go, Red and Blue are the primary ones; everyone else is more niche. Cyan is Blue's wife; Indigo is their producer and primary editor on their podcast; Magenta is Red's sister and a TTRPG enthusiast; Yellow refers to their friend LudoHistory, who specializes in Norse myth; and there are several Greens, which is the colour usually referring to one of Blue's numerous college roommates.

generally speaking, Hades is a pretty reasonable god. man's just chilling. of course, you wouldn't want to piss him off, because pissing off any god is a bad idea, but if you *have* to piss off a god... yeah, doing it to Hades will probably lead to a lesser punishment than doing it to *Persephone*

I find it fascinating that Sisyphus’ punishment became divorced from his crime. The nature of the punishment is linked to the nature of his crime: the futile effort to stave off death.
@nerdiboy5128
@nerdiboy5128 10 месяцев назад
"Divorced?" It sounds like the punishment was made to fit the crime: Being forced to do something pointless for all eternity, much like how trying to cheat death only results in a person making more enemies for themselves and merely waylaying the inevitable for a time. There is no 'win' scenario when squaring up against one's own mortality, and it would be better to get your affairs in order, say your goodbyes, and face death with some dignity, rather than go out blubbering and pleading like a spineless coward. I say that as though I wouldn't do that, but I know that I'd most likely do it if I still believed that it was 'avoidable.' 😅😮‍💨😓 In very obvious scenarios where there is absolutely NO way out (such as dying of a terminal illness that has no cure; being trapped in a closed-off environment in a hard to reach area, such as a caved-in portion of a mine that isn't on any map and has few people visit it, or a stranded sub at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the sea, where light doesn't even touch), I'd be more resigned to my fate and try to spend what little time I have praying to God to have mercy on my worthless soul, for giving me the strength to forgive those who did me wrong so I won't get sent to Hell, weighed down by hate and bitterness, and further praying that when death does come for me, it'll get me in my sleep, peacefully and quickly, rather than suffering of starvation, thirst, and slow, agonizing diseases resulting from that and other factors.
@nerdiboy5128

What's even more interesting is how recent philosophers propose that Sisyphus could be interpreted as the average human life. "One must imagine Sisyphus happy." - Albert Camus
@nerdiboy5128
@nerdiboy5128 10 месяцев назад
@@dansattah Neat!👍 Also, Camus... wasn't he an Absurdist or a Cynic? Because, to say that Sisyphus is happy with his fate strikes me as having just a hint of sarcastic irony (because Sisyphus strived so hard to escape death and now that it's claimed him, all he CAN do is endlessly strive for no reason other than to suffer for his foreseeable eternity; if he had accepted death and shown even the tiniest trace of atonement or remorse for his actions, he might have gotten off with a lighter sentence, but no, he just couldn't let up and ended up becoming the architect of his own damnation). I know he, Camus that is, wrote _le Étranger_ ("The Stranger") , but that's exactly the full extent of my knowledge of him, along with the knowledge that he was born of French parents living in Nigeria, as part of their colonization program.

6:57 Fun fact, a lot of scholars believe that Aphrodite was a goddess of war first, and became a goddess of love later, only really losing her war goddess status because the Greeks didn’t like strong violent women much and Ares whole thing was war so her being war as well would invalidate his existence.

you are both right and wrong while what you said is true Athena was also a war associated deity however Ares and Athena represented different parts of war Athena was glory, victory, strategy and all the good parts of war Ares was bloodshed, defeat, trauma and all the messy parts of war basically Athena was all the good parts of war and Ares was the non-negotiable parts of war. If you want a slightly more historical aspect to these myths, then i recommend Red's longer videos on the individual Greek Gods... like "Miscellaneous Myths: Artemis and Apollo", "Miscellaneous Myths: Hades and Persephone", "Miscellaneous Myths: Dionysus", and "Miscellaneous Myths: Hermes". In the same vein id also recommend "Miscellaneous Myths: The Wild Hunt" and "Miscellaneous Myths: Loki". Those videos do go deep into the mythology of these myths, but they also touch on their cultural and historical backgrounds. The story of Sekhmet is one of my favorite stories in mythology because; "Rampaging Lion Goddess of Vengeance is stopped in her murderous rampage by getting her too sloshed to continue fighting and then taking some of the horny out of her and creating a goddess or two from it so when she wakes up she's not as murder-y." And one of those goddesses later on literally dances naked to stop the ecclipse by getting the sun god to come out of a cave after being made fun of by Sobek. No, I'm not joking. 38:40: I may not know much about this, and I haven't really looked much into Greco-Roman Myths in a long time (instead focusing more on Norse Mythology, Germanic Mythology, Celtic Mythology, Iberian Mythology, and so on), but I think the key reason that Sisyphus' trickery was despised, whereas other Greek heroes trickery was approved of is because of _what_ they used that trickery _for_ . In the heroes' cases, they used it to try and do something that was good or ordained by the gods (whether or not the gods did anything "good" is kind of a moot point, especially since directly questioning the gods would often be punished by death or a fate worse than death). It not done on their behalf for themselves, but to save others or at the very least do something to make other peoples' existences more bearable, like offering relief to a cursed individual so they're not depressed about their wretched condition. In Sisyphus' case, he does it solely for his own gain, which helps no one, and is a majorly arrogant dick about it, bragging about how he was much smarter or much cleverer than everybody else around him, taking the opportunity to gloat about it, and shows zero restraint or consideration for who he's mouthing off to. Not to mention, he killed a lot of people and managed to escape his initial punishment by rules lawyering his way out of it, forcing them to wait until he died of old age, growing more done with his shit all the while. Why they didn't immediately resume their attempt to kill him is beyond me, though I think that when he took advantage of Persephone's kindness, he or she may have sworn on the river Styx to not pursue him, to let him go in peace. That's only a guess on my end though, as there is no explanation given on why (when he didn't immediately return to the Underworld after saying that he had to go convince his wife to prepare the funerary rites for him) they didn't realize he wasn't willingly coming back; Red suggests here it's because Thanatos is wary of Sisyphus and suffering from an injured pride, not wanting to deal with the bastard anymore or be made a fool of again.

Delphi was dedicated to Apollo. Or more accurately, the Oracle of Deplhi was. AFAIK, not all of the gods had specific cities- Athena and Athens are kind of a rare case, and most like Athena was invented by Athens entirely. Gods did have regional popularity, however. First, urban and rural divides see a lot of different gods covering the same rolls, though the rural ones are typically less well-recorded. But in addition, Hercules basically became a god in his own right among the Spartans and most of Magna Graecia, the colonies in Italy and whatnot. You also see Aphrodite fall out of favor as a love goddess in those same regions iirc, largely replaced by...it was either Hera or Persephone, I forget.

They collectively all decide Noah - for background he's Kaiba's stepbrother from the season 3 filler arc who cheated death at least once by be virtualized after he got into a car accident as a child - is the best person to do it, because he cheated death too. Noah is 110% done with this but he complies, since he hast the body of a ten year old it takes a stupid long time, and by the end of it he's even more done and when Sysiphus begs him to do it again he yells at Sysiphus to move his own rock and lets the rock roll back down the hill (optionally crushing sysiphus's ghost on the way down)

I see that you are very interested in mythology and such.... because of that i want to take the opportunity to recommend a series of videos called "Destripando la Historia"... They are songs with either drawn or animated music videos that shows the most important stories of some of the most iconic characters in several mythologies. The songs are very well produced and have a ton of Pop Culture references and comedic gags, the only catch to them is that they're in Spanish...... but don't worry there are channels in youtube which give those videos accurate subtitles.

43:25 - in Greek mythology in general, Persephone was seen as way scarier than Hades. Her name literally means "bringer of death," FFS.

39:52 The way I gasped when he said Delphi 😭 Apollo would be offended and disappointed Also, I think Aphrodite is the patron goddess of the island Kypros ( Cyprus ) ? Edit : Apparently there’s also myths where she share the position of patron of Korinthos ( Corinth ) with Poseidon ???

On how weird Sekhmet's creation is: TRUST ME, THAT IS ON THE TAMER SIDE ON HOW EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY DOES THINGS. Like, say, a certain contest between gods based around male bodily fluids on Egyptian proto-salads. Yeah, shit gets wild in ways you'll regret knowing. Also, while I'd love to learn more about African myths with you (seeing as my own knowledge on the overall general subject is akin to a bee larvae in a stump-sized hive), the sucky thing about African tribal mythoses and why we don't have a lot of it is that most - if not, all tribes in Africa have maintained and upheld an oral tradition and have passed on all these stories by mouth. Y'know, the old fashioned way, before we carved stories into walls. The reason being thus: They believe that written history or religious beliefs are Dead due to their unchanging form, and that such things can only really live as they are carried by word; changing and growing with the generations. While this is interesting and reflects on a very interesting philosophy of having Traditions grow with the coming new generations, this is frustrating because we don't have the Master myth and what we have is just memories of memories of memories. Hell, what's worse to realize is that we may have lost more stories than what we can learn now due to epidemics, millennia of tribal conflicts, and that hige debacle of Europe taking African land. Plus, whike tribespeople can be based as Hell, there is a slight chance they will disown whatever work you make in trying to make some written form of the myth because it's Dead by their standards, like the first time Anansi was Categorized by an anthropologist in the 1900's. But most times, they either won't care that you just scribbled their stories down, or of you're really lucky, be legit happy somebody from far away wants to hear their story and share it with others. Side note about the bride-wealth payments: they are basically just dowries; especially since dowries in Africa could likely be similar to dowries in places like, say, Denmark. Good clothing or tools, livestock, precious materials, slaves; what's traded is really more based on what's most preciousky coveted where. Like, a barge of silken clothings can get you a middle noble's daughter in Japan, five young Yews and two cows can get you a Jarl's daughter in Scandinavia, and salt tablets, gold and quality slaves can get you any high-ranking wife in Northwestern Africa back in the days of yore. Hell, pretty sure a cart load of narwhal tusks can get you every daughter of a fairly greedy Sultan (yeah, medicine was weird back then) Final note: The funny thing about Sisyphus is that he really didn't learn his lesson. Wanna know how he spent his second chance at life? He kept doing the same shit he was doing until he pissed off the wrong guy and went on the run with his wife to avoid dying; where he died of old age, in his sleep, in the middle of a desert. And what was he rewarded with: the God of Silent Death, the Stoic Lord of the Underworld, and the Dread Persephone directly in front of him with malicious intent. And to add lemon juice to the fresh cut: that path he pushes the bouler up on is greased.

10:48: Heh, people say the same about me. Which is why I heavily empathize with Airier when he, for whatever reason, feels that he needs to apologize or put up a disclaimer so he doesn't piss off the perpetually angry, drama-and-negativity-fueled commentators who'll spit fire at you for saying something they don't agree with, or because they interpreted your words as having a much different, more serious/ harmful intent then what you really meant. It's why I don't enjoy being on Discord or social media all that much. It's like punt-kicking a hornets nest into a lions den and then proceeding to be chased by both the hornets _and_ the lions! And I'm not even trying to be 'smug' or 'abrasive' on purpose! It's just that folks interpret my comments that way because of their length and general verbosity, because I try to make a comment that's more than a just simple one worded 'First!' or 'Wassup' or that is a heavily-garbled, near-indecipherable string of letters like what you'd see during those error loading bluescreens (that's literally what cell-phone and internet text lingo looks like to me, making it hard to tell what's an abbreviation or an acronym or what have you; I may have been born in the 90's, but when it comes to reading or speaking on social media, I'm practically a boomer). I especially really hate it when folks tell me 'Too Long; Didn't Read' (even greater offense is felt when they abbreviate it to 'Tl;Dr,' because to me, it shows that they couldn't even be bothered to spell out what they wanted to say, they probably just lazily clicked it on their iPhones or tablets, without even looking up, with the same callous, jaded, apathetic indifference of bored teenagers and young adults, causing me to pinch the bridge of my nose in frustration like some long-suffering parent or high-school teacher who isn't getting paid enough to put up with this shit) Also, people think I'm more snobbish than I actually am, because you can't really tell the tone of the writer's comment as there are no sounds or stressors to indicate where emphasis is being placed (helpful hint; for those who want to use italics in your comments, you basically press shift key, and press the hyphen button next to the zero on your keyboard, changing it to an underscore symbol; then, you make sure that there's space between the words, otherwise it gets italicized too, which I find annoying because I have to put spaces behind the punctuation marks and the damned spellchecker makes that stupid red squiggly line like it's passing moral judgement on you for trying to edit your text into a more nuanced, easily-readable form), resulting in Poe's Law, as people try to interpret their own meaning by placing the emphasis where they feel it ought to be, leading to miscommunication of intent. What the author likely didn't _intend_ to come across as snobbish, sounds that way to somebody else on the internet, due to expectations fostered by Reddit or 4-Chan or other messageboard sites where folks regularly get into flame wars. In my case, I'm just a very nerdy, socially-awkward thirty-something who enjoys sharing trivia and offering advice. Not forcing it on folks, being like 'My way is the only way, and if you diverge whatsoever, then the wrath of God will be felt, so help me!' or some other cringe edgelord holier-than-thou tirade. If you want to believe or disregard what I tell you, that's _YOUR_ decision, no one else's, so you are free to do as you please. Just don't bite my head off or start fights over something that didn't need to be a fight in the first place, making a mountain out of a molehill. The internet is a frightening, frightening place I fear and despise, yet can't keep myself away from.
