HOW TO Train your dog for the Halo Dog Collar a GPS Wireless fence

This video shows you how I Introduce and train my dog, to be on the Halo Dog Collar. This is the second phase of our training introducing her to the GPS boundaries.
In this video you'll note that the GPS fences are set, this allows me to play with her in the yard, walk her virtual fence, and get sound corrections/warnings when we wander too far.
I was amazed at how far her training progressed in just 4 short days.
In addition, I show how easy it is to adjust the fence through the Halo App to make changes and a few recommendations.
During the video, you can even see an alert on my phone when she starts to move too far into the boundary zone and what she does.
Lastly, I want to be sure I'm clear - I have not been asked to do any videos, or even review this product. However I am a hopeless nerd, and when I find something that is actually a useful tool, that solves a problem, I want to dig in fully.
Update 6/2021 - Halo did approve me as an affiliate, so I do link to the Halo product.
I actually hope my feedback makes it back to the company (which it did!) ... maybe inform a conversation or help make a decision based on a real application.
This product is a market disruptor (sort of like when mattresses were suddenly being boxed up and shipped by Casper and Purple it turned the mattress industry on its ear!) .
So yes ... do I want to make this a successful tool - absolutely but if it were a waste of money (and so far it has not been) I would say so.
This is ultimately why I'm spending as much time as I can sharing my experience so other early adopters can decide if it's right for them.

Just got this collar last week - ordered when I thought I'd have undivided time for training...well some stuff came up that has delayed my ability but I'm still trying to catch up and do the training...I've just been frustrated with the app training...feel like I'm swiping and reading the same thing over and over and not making progress...so thought I'd supplement by searching here...THANK YOU! It's helpful to follow along visually and get these videos!

Yea ... happened to me too! Trust your instincts if the dog seems to get it - move forward !! Save the muscle in your thumb (I agree the app training is terrible - and at one point it’s not even complete - missing photos) really hope they swing back to it - that’s why I say if you aren’t an early adopter ... may not be the right product for you lol

@@KarmaDogSpeak thanks My gal is quite smart...she's just a bird and squirrel chaser without regard for anything...so the gps included was something that helped sway my purchase...we needed some kind of fence and enclosed all our deck areas but the yard is still tough for her. For now I have her getting used to the collar (she's got a super skinny but long neck) while I learn everything...I want to watch more video of boundary training and selecting settings etc...thank you again! I appreciate your comments!

I would love to do this - honestly it's a time issue. I think I would do better rewriting their instruction book LOL - but believe it or not a 3 minute video is a very long process (especially when it's not your wheel house - my day job is Art Teacher) maybe I'll make it a project for this spring. I like the idea.

Thanks for these videos! They have been very helpful in explaining the product. We do a lot of camping and sometimes don’t have cell service. Would we still be able to set a boundary within the app around our campsite? Thanks!

According to how they work and their product description - yes I’m hoping to test this (remote map with very little access to share my experience) very soon. I can tell you we have a camp in the Adirondacks and I have the map set up in my phone app which is supposed to downloaded to the collar for when we travel there. We haven’t gone to open it up but when we do ... I’ll be putting another video together.

Thanks so much for this video! Finding honest reviews has been super tough, so thank you! I am wondering how things are going now that you've had the collar for a year? Is it still functioning properly? Have you had problems with your dog breaking out of the boundaries...either because the collar quit working or because of the will of your dog? Also, are the physical features (buckle, etc.) of the collar itself still holding up? Thanks for any feedback you can provide!

Actually I still love it! A lot of updates to thier customer service (which is a different model than many traditional companies) has been very noted … also thier support in relation to training. I’ve also contacted other companies and have offered to review thier product to compare NONE have taken me up on it! I think thats very telling.

thanks for sharing this. would like to know the accuracy of the virtual fence. how often do you charge the collar. and do you have the GPS tracking subscription.

I would say it’s pretty solid and by having more fence posts (up to 20) you can adjust your map with more options - i did notice today I had one “false alert” by my metal grill - I believe the issue was the interference the metal caused but so far overall consistent. I do recommend walking the map (to familiarize yourself with the boundaries you set).

Oh and I charge it at night and try to take it off when she’s in the house (I just throw it on the charge so I know where I put it) the real test will be when we go to out camp in a few weeks. A bigger issue I have is managing the battery on my phone. The collar doesn’t drain it, but my day does- so I’m trying to be more cognizant of having. It ready for when I come home after work and want he’d to be out getting fresh air.

Thank you for this! We've Been looking at this for some time but can not get a devent review. One questioms if your phone is dead or if the phone is not at home (like ifyou leave the dog with a sitter) will the boundaries remain active?

Jorge - I have found it isn't quite a review ... it's more my "exploration" of the product thus far. So far I haven't hit any major issues that are deal breakers, if anything I've been pretty happy with it - but it does take work from both owner and dog. If you're phone is dead everything stays in place, you just don't have full access to the tool kit.

We are in the same position ... got a quote for an invisible fence $2,500 ... looking for other options, and like the idea that this is adaptable and portable. Question: what happens if the phone/device with the Halo app is not at home (i.e. it's on my phone and I'm at work, but my kids are home with the dog)?

This is a great question. It works - from my understanding the map (gps coordinates) are downloaded on the collar (which is why if your phone is dead the collar still works). However I'm unclear if you would still connect to the device (remotely) or if you need to be closer via bluetooth. Honestly - I love the Halo - but if I were in your situation it would be a tough choice on what the best fit would be. I guess I would figure out what your objectives are and figure out what product fits your needs the best (particularly in reliability)

Did you use the training videos that was provided by Cesar? I have an enclosed fence, but I do travel allot. I want to be sure when I travel I want to take my dogs. Just wondering if we need to train them each time we travel so they know their limits.

Quick question, can you specify areas within areas? For example in this video you said “hey, get off of there” when she was on that plastic area in your yard. Can designate that location as a zone?

I think you mean sort of overlap space - I have not tested that - but I would say no - the virtual barrier can be 10-15 feet on either side - so I don't believe that's an option. If there were an area you wanted to keep them out of - one option might be to do that manually (through the app).

There is a subscription but it is really cheap, like 9 cents a day cheap. I am curious about the boundaries too. How accurate are the boundaries?

Pretty accurate.. and very adjustable. I recommend walking it with the collar in your hand and the map in your other hand - it’s pretty impressive. I think one thing I noticed tonight ... I did get a false alert when by my grill .. I think the metal impacted it.

@happycamper ... I found that trying to use the Halo Collar with beacons made things more complicated for me. Luckily, both of my dogs quickly grasped the concept of avoiding the areas with the beacon when I used the collar alone. When I reached out to the company for advice, they recommended moving on to the next steps without overthinking it, so that's what I did. Later on, I decided to give beacons a try, especially for my food-driven dog, Cosmo. He had a knack for getting into the garbage, even without a handle on the door! Surprisingly, he caught on to avoiding the beacon pretty fast. Then hilariously, we threw the beacon out by accident when we took the trash out... thankfully he got it and doesn't open the trash anymore.

Wondering what notifications you receive if your dog goes beyond the boundary. Does the GPS work and show you where the dog is, or does it just tell you that the dog is outside the area?

I don't have it in front of me, but essentially (from memory) I get an alert on my phone, and I can go to the map to check - but there is a slight delay. Also, It will show me where she got the alert on the fence so it gives me a good idea of what direction to go in. Overall though, she seems to respecting her boundaries and gets it. Sometimes the lure is too much for her (our neighbors across the street) so at least I can see in her history that's a problem spot for her - and we can work more attentively together.

@@KarmaDogSpeak I’ve got the same question, will it give you the location of the collar and not just where she penetrated the “fence” Perhaps you could take the collar for a ride down the street, leave it somewhere and then see if you can locate it from the phone you left at the house. Ps. I’ve been enjoying your videos, best of luck with the training

John Im sorry I missed this - but the training the dog to respond is modeled in that video ... I would be very interested in knowing how I can express it more clearly - (really my goal is to help) ... but essentially it's 1. first introduced on leash - approach the boundry - get a minor whistle/sound - return to safe space and positive reward. 2. off leash - same Training should be focused on that first initial boundary (sound / vibration) to really teach a dog their space, but don't hesitate to rely on your "instinct" as far as what will and will not work for your dog and your situation.

After months of working with costumer service because the 3 collars I have were no longer connecting or staying connected, they finally offered to exchange them. I sent the 3 collars in and only received 1 collar back. It came in 1 week, which impressed me and I thought the other 2 would follow soon there after. However it has now been a month and no collars. Their last email states they received no collars back, and that they wanted proof I sent them back. However they sent me 1 of the 3 back so, please tell me how you did not receive the other 2 in the same box! This company is out for the money not your precious dog! I have also written 2 review on their web page and they are not listed! That says a lot about a company if they will only show happy reviews and not the review of the people who are having difficulty and they don't stand behind their product!

Beverly - hoping you get some sort of resolution on your collars. To be honest, I've been very happy with the collar and their customer service - but there is no doubt that sometimes human error can take a toll and impact the end user for sure. I know they are coming out with a new version as well. Curious to know how you sent it ... seems that level of return (yes they are pricey) it would have been smart to send it via FED EX or UPS so that it can be signed for and verified on your end as being received. I will also share that from what I've read and in other discussions I've had with other owners that have tried different collars that HALO far out performs other collars in performance when compared to inexpensive models that are "competitors". I've invited many of these competitors to allow me to review and compare that two yet none will take me up - which is fine, but telling. Best of luck to you in resolving your issue.
