I have a friend who's a HUGE How to Train Your Dragon fan, and when he told me about this, I thought it was pretty interesting that DreamWorks is now starting to make live action versions of their films. Anyways, this isn't Disney, this is DreamWorks. 2 totally different animation companies. I think a live-action HTTYD could actually work, as long as they make Toothless look good.

Live-Action Remakes are not just cashing in on nostalgia but also directly spitting on the medium of Animation.

I think it would be really cool if they based it on the books ( yes, the HTTYD is based on a book series) because the books are actually very different from the movies but still really good, and definitely worth filming.

Just when DreamWorks was entering it's Renaissance, this happens. It's bad enough that Disney won't knock it off with the live-action remakes, I don't want DreamWorks sabotaging themselves by doing this too. Even if it does turn out good, it's just not necessary.

Instead of remaking the movie in life action-shot for shot- I think it would be neat if there was an adaptation or a tv show about the Httyd books; like have Berk already be at peace with the dragons, make toothless an annoying small green dragon, introduce Camicazi, Valhallarama, the Witch and the King's Lost Things. Even though Httyd is inspired by the books, it is vastly different, and I think it would be neat to see the books in a movie or tv format

We don't need a remake. The originals were fantastic and a treasure to watch over and over and over

I never thought Universal would ever want to go the remake route disney is going. Makes me wonder if Paramount, Warner Bros, and other studios will do it at some point. EDIT: Actually, Paramount is already on board, and Warner Bros soon enough will I'm sure.

The closest we got to a live-action How to Train Your Dragon was a live touring arena show from 2012, the year of the dragon and the debut year of the DreamWorks Dragons TV series!

The intro was the best way to describe, Disney and their remakes.

This being DreamWorks first live-action remake, and also having the same writer return, I say we give them a chance. It's Disney remakes I'm more worried about

These live action remakes start coming and they don’t stop coming. DreamWorks followed suit, and the fans went running.

I feel like this could be a very good thing especially if they are based more on the books to differentiate between the animated films and it. Also I feel like the visuals could be great with the right effects.

If it was closer to the original books, and not just a live-action remake of the film, I'd be excited for this. But it looks like they're not going in that direction.

It might not be bad because there was this one short teaser from the hidden world movie where they had the voice actors in real life interact with toothless and it looks amazing

I’m kind of interested if they will put animated Toothless into the real world like the video with Kit Harrington and Toothless. If Toothless isn’t nearly as adorable, I’m exiting the cinema. I don’t have a problem with the cast, especially with Nico, but I hope the cast will deliver the characters we all love and know very well. However there’s just something of the blond hair and blue eyes that just ties it all together in Astrid.

As much as I want another dive into the How To Train Your Dragon world (Nine Realms doesn't exist). I'd prefer it to be animated, not disturbingly realistic looking, with a repeat of the same story, so soon, at least give us something new that doesn't retread ground and doesn't disrespect the original.

Honestly, a live-action remake has been always my childhood dream so I am kinda excited, especially if it's dreamworks that's in hold of this.

It’s important to note that whilst they want to stay as true as possible to the animation there will be elements of the film that focus on areas of the books that Cressida Cowell wrote that wasn’t necessarily in the animations meaning yes it will be a remake but with new content that wasn’t in the animations.

Wonderful now DreamWorks is gonna start remaking all of their movies in live action.

I really enjoyed the trilogy of films and just to see it replaced with a remake is sad.

considering dreamworks has made some artistically gorgeous films recently (the last wish/bad guys) I honestly would have loved to see a hyttd reanimated. the original isn't terrible by any means but imagine seeing it again with the technology we have now or even just with the vibrance of the 3rd movie. rather that than a live action.

When I heard they were making a live action Httyd, I thought they were taking inspiration from the books, not the trilogy as the books honestly deserve more credit. Imagine in the first scene: You have a group of young teen boys stuck in a cave filled with wild dragons to then be chased to the edge of a cliff and they take the chance to survive the fall. Then the climax where two "gobsmackingly vast" dragons have a fight. That'd be DOPE!

I know alot of people are not looking forward to the live action remake, but i personally am! And not only for nostalgia for a franchise that literally became a big part of my life but also for the experirence im sure alot of people never got due to some reason for not being able to do the 2012 tour arena. Dreamworks may be following what disney did in remaking one of their most popular movies, but considering how the original movies/shows turned out, and the original director is on board, this one may turn out better than we all expect!

I've been hesitant about live action remakes since the Avatar The last Airbender live action movie. It'd be cool to see how toothless would look as realistic cgi but it's definitely not necessary when the movies already ended so well.

We already have a live action version of this. It was a stage show from the same people behind Walking With Dinosaurs.

The Disney live-action remakes started off on an okay note. But this is more so a reboot, and a new thing than a remake.

What's even more disappointing about this is that the original director who's gonna be involved with these remakes has always complained about Hollywood's cookie cutter mentality but is contributing to it now.

I agree with all of this except that i actually really like the remake of Cinderella, it told the story in a different way with more background and depth to the characters, and the slippers/dresses in it were GORGEOUS

you know what would be cool not a retelling of the same story but a live action film set in the HTYD setting taking advantage of the mediums benefits to tell a grittier and darker story perhaps MA with full blood and violence and tell lets say the story of Diamoar an accomplished Viking dragon hunter getting stranded on an island with a dragon after her fleet was attacked by the dragons escaping the big mountain in the first movie, she's a hardened warrior but with an inquisitive mind and has seen toothless and hiccup and is somewhat open to the idea of dragon training. though still apprehensive as she's dedicated her life to hunting dragons and isn't ready to face the realization of all she's killed yet (like violet evergarden realizing all the people she's killed) the film would start from her perspective on the arena fight where toothless is captured thus sparking her initial interest in dragon training that would only be fostered by the battle on big scary mountain I think that fight would be awesome to see in realistic mediums. anyway on the way back a group of the dragons that fled the island attack her boat and the others perhaps falling out of a storm causing her and one of the dragons to be stranded on an uninhabited island both are injured and are forced to survive with each others help (maybe they can have a cool fight but later she becomes curious if there is another way to deal with the dragon and get off the island) she knows that she cant build a shack let alone a boat with her injuries resulting in her and the dragon having to parley and work together building shelter hunting food and being the necessary support to each others wounds maybe she's lost the use of her arm and the dragon is semi blind (could have a cute scene where she straps her shield to her chest and uses the bold red to signal to the dragon that it's her) with her pulling ropes to help it navigate. until their connection is strong enough for the to navigate back out to sea for a climactic final scene of triumph over an ocean storm or something that would require all of their bond and training to be used to it's fullest and when they just barely make it close to berk she can be helped the rest of the way by some fishermen or by hiccup coming to help her not sure. what do you think?

What is not being made live-action these days?

If this was a live action series with a story closer to the original books I just might enjoy it.

frankly, having the original director from the original films is a huge plus, and considering it's from dreamworks there might be a chance this might be really cool and turn out amazing. the only thing that will keep this okay is if there will only be ONE remake of this franchise. no matter how successful it gets only one will keep it okay unless its more decades later on the road for a re-remake i suppose. only time will tell.

Literally 4 years later: Hey guys we're making a live action httyd because we want to exploit all the fans for their money. Oh and we'll make it a shit movie too so we don't have to spend so much on VFX.

I knew this trope would happen to other companies like Dreamworks eventually. 😒 I mean, sure, we’ve had live action remakes of Disney films, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and many other classic cartoons based on TV shows like Fat Albert and Alvin and the Chipmunks, but SOMEHOW I knew this would affect Dreamworks eventually.

Given the release date of early 2025, I can see this being a request by higher-ups to create synergy and remain relevant for the HTTYD land at Epic Universe in Orlando

They should base this movie more on the *books* imo... The story in the httyd books is drastically different from the movies. It would better fit the tone of a live action movie.

If they make sure all the visual effects are good (outstanding even) and they make the film it bit more like Game of Thrones (if they were going the adult audience route that is), then maybe I'll go and judge it immensely, but we'll have to wait and see what happens

Yes I hate Live A ruin Remakes, but come one you have to admit this one works. How to Train Your Dragon is one of those animated movies where it’s magic lies in its writing and character design something CGI and actors can pull off. Hopefully it’ll give a more serious tone like they did with Milan except this time the serious tone will benefit it rather than take from it. And you can’t tell me you aren’t excited to see dragon fights in CG.
