In this episode, I'm sharing about how to transfer orchid seeds from the mother flask to several daughter flasks. This is the next step after sowing seeds and watching for orchid seed germination. I'll give some reasons for doing this transfer (also known as replating). This is my first time doing an orchid seed transfer, so I was worried about contaminations. I'll share a few things about how to prevent and treat contaminations.

Excellent attitude to experimentation and, again, lots of great information.

Hey, to lesson the contamination rate you can work close to an open flam so that the spores in the air get caught in the up draft and float away from your media. This is something we use in the lab when growing stuff in petri dishes and in most cases they do work

Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to keep it in mind for the next time 😁

That being said you'll neet to work either next to a bunsen burner or a stove I don't know if a candle can work

My advise is to cover the top of the glass with plastic wrap. Due to the manufacturing process, the inner side of the foil is sterile. If you secure it with a rubber band, the seal is quite safe. The biggest advantage is that plastic wrap breathes and allows for air exchange and the seedlings grow better due to this. Another advantage is that more light enters the jar from the top which helps the protocorms to orient themselves.

Good to know! I’ll have to try it next time 😁

When you replate, do you also use the P723 media?

I'm wondering whether the "suffocating itself to death problem" could be resolved if a piece of dry ice is added to the flask during the initial flasking. Would be fun to know
@AttainableGreen
@AttainableGreen 2 года назад
That would be an interesting experiment. My main concern would be the huge temperature change of the dry ice in flask. Might flash freeze the seeds before it sublimates and when it does, the pressure may cause other issues.

@@AttainableGreen jars for pressure canning might work? And the flash freezing issues could be solved if the dry ice isn't in contact with the media? (E.g. dry ice placed in a plastic bottle cap)
