Yes as long as you pay the yearly SMA fee. You buy memoQ once for about 600EUR and then you pay a yearly SMA fee of about 100 something euro if you want the service and maintenance (which also includes updating to newer versions). You find all that on the memoQ FAQ page
@@Freelanceverse I've just checked and they say users have to pay 20% of the list price for SMA in other words new users qualify for 1year free updates after that they will have to pay €120 if they want to keep the software updated.
Thank you for the explanation! I am a translation student (Spanish, German, French) and was given a memoQ license for a few months from my university so I am trying to learn and get experience with these tools :)
Hi Juan, wow that's a great initiative by your university. Make sure to make full use of it, there is so much to explore in the tool. My video only scratches the surface :)
Danke Adrian!! Your videos help a lot to understand the basics of a freelance translator, your advice and recommendations on everything are much appreciated! Your videos are very enjoyable to watch and easy to understand. We would love to see part 2 about MemoQ or other progs.
Hi Olya, thanks so much for the feedback, I appreciate it a lot :) great to hear how the content is perceived. There is a lot more coming, stay tuned :)
"It is exactly thanks to people like you that we have been able to be in business for such a long time." "Dank Menschen wie Ihnen konnten wir so lange im Geschäft bleiben wie wir." Just another example ^^
@@Freelanceverse, you are too kind! I can say the same about yours. That's the way to do it 🙌🏻 to many more games and fun time with friends and family.
@@Freelanceverse, from those that are still in print I quite enjoy The Castles of Burgundy, Scythe and Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, one that you might like as well, given that you own Terraforming Mars. BTW, this is my English channel: www.youtube.com/@aliplaysaloten I want to film my current top 10 soon.
Thanks for the video. I like MemoQ but I am a Mac user, so my only option is working with MemoQ online. Maybe you can talk about that in the part 2 ;) I would love a Studio Trados tutorial too. Thanks for all your hard work!
Thanks Adrian (in Aussie English you’d be immediately re-christened as Ads 😅) i would looove to se a part 2 or even a mini series. May I suggest you put in part 2 or 3: if you can import TMs created on other CATs or not and how to import termbases fromxls files, or update current termbases, etc. Alternatively, if all these info are available somewhere else just mention the sources. Also, could you do a vid on your experience with Trados VS Memo Q , if applicable, or with other CAT tools? Thank you as ever for your precious content.
Thanks so much for the ongoing support, Sonia! Really appreciate it :) sure, I will make a part 2 or 3 then. Your suggestions sound very good actually. There is lots more to talk about on CAT tools. Btw, I like Ads 😄👍
I’m looking for a CAT tool that offers a single user plan that includes rate profile and a rate card feature. Apparently the rate card feature is only available for agency plans.
I currently use memoQ (Translator pro v 9.10) for Eng to Korean translation projects. momoQ is easier and more intuitive as compared to its major competitor. The only complaint I have is the shifty mouse cursor. As you move the mouse cursor up to the ribbon menu the MOUSE CURSOR TURNS TO A DOUBLE-HEADED ARROW and it comes back to the normal cursor as you move it down. It does not happen all the time: The cursor may behave normally if you close the project and open the project again. I addressed this issue to memoQ support more than once but they simply did not recognize the issue.
Thanks for this informative video. Question: I have set Eng > Som language pair for one project, and want to create another for Somali > English TM, but can't set it up. Can you do a video for such an example?
Thank you for this great introduction, very nicely done! I have a question which I did not see answered here. Is it possible to select and copy all the segments (for example, to paste in an MS Word file)? I know this is possible in Trados but not in Phrase (Memsource). To me, this is an important feature that I would prefer to have, but not having used MEMOQ, I would appreciate if someone could let me know.
Hi Mango, yes it is possible. However, what I usually do is "export bilingual", then you get a nicely exported bilingual file in Word with different columns. It's nice to proofread it like that sometimes or to send it to a colleague to continue working on it.
Adrian, I'm new to using CAT tools, this video is very helpful! I know you said MemoQ is your top choice but SDL works fine too, not sure if they make any difference in handling Chinese characters, both Simplified and Traditional? You probably don't know the answer directly, but people you know may do or have experience, will appreciate if you can share a way or two to find out! I am thinking about getting one of those two so trying to compare. Thank you!
Do you export data from memoQ to make your invoice ? Or do you just take the data you need (exemple with words number) and enter this data on your invoice ? In resume, do we need "proof" from CAT TOOLS regarding data ? If the agency disagree with a repetitive sentence and do not want it invoiced. Don't know if I am clear enough 😅
No, I don't export data for my invoice. If the client wants to work with a pricing structure, then it's their job to send you a proper PO. Based on that PO, you then create your invoice.
Hey Adrian, just subscribed!! Although not related to this video, how much time does it take you to get a translating job? Personally i just got told i took to long, and now I've been feeling bad about that. It was a 6 page document that i was able to get done in 4 and a half hours, was it too long?
Hi Nugget, thanks for the comment. Make sure to always agree on a deadline with the client upfront. For me it takes about 1 hour for 500 words to translate. Thats a rough estimate of course but I hope it helps.
Hi Nugget - the usual benchmark that agencies talk about is 2500 - 3000 words per day. If each page has 300 words (as a rough estimate), then you've translated 1800 words in 4.5 hours. That doesn't sound slow to me at all, that sounds like a normal pace. As Adrian says, be sure to agree a reasonable deadline with your client. Some clients don't understand how long it takes to translate, research and check our work.
Love it. I use the Version 7.8 and I was wondering how to add old document already translated into an actual TM. Or in other word, how to feed my TM with old translated terms?
Hi Douglas, try googling "alignment post translation memoq", there are plently of how-to's. You essentially need to import the text post translation, align it with the source and then save it into the TM
Why are we forced to be machine translators, 50years ago they didn't even know about softwares besides data base perhaps. I find it so strongly commercialized branch that the creativity gets killed
