John Gibbons is a registered Osteopath, Lecturer and Author and is demonstrating how to treat for an ankle sprain using Kinesiology Tape and in particular for the ATFL and CFL ligament sprains.
John also hosts Certified & accredited online courses and these are accessible from your own home.
1. Shoulder Complex - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
2. Vital Nerves - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
3. Cervical Spine - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
4. Pelvis, SIJ & Lumbar - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
5. K-Taping Techniques - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
6. Muscle Energy Techniques - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
7. Glutes & Psoas - bodymaster-method.mykajabi.co...
In another video John shows you how to tape for posture as this technique will help control the position of the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle and also the upper crossed syndrome (UCS) defined by Janda. Great to control forward head posture, thoracic outlet syndrome, cervical pain and even headaches because of the control position. The patient can leave the tape on for 3-5 days and make sure patient is not allergic to any of the products prior to application.
John also has many other videos, e.g. during his hip joint videos he discusses an acetabular labral tear and also a femoroacetabular impingement called an FAI - these are cam and pincer type of impingement. He also mentions perthes disease and osteoarthritis of the hip joint. John also discusses how the hip flexors (psoas) are involved and the iliofemoral ligaments and how they cause an inhibition to the gluteus maximus (Gmax) through the hip extension firing pattern test. Janda and the lower crossed syndrome is also mentioned and how this can cause lower back, facet or disc pathology of L5 or L5 and involve the nerve roots.
John also shows you in his other videos to assess the nerve root level of the adductors (obturator nerve through L3 reflex), patella tendon (femoral nerve through L4 reflex), semitendinosus (tibial / sciatic nerve of L5 reflex) and Achilles / plantar (tibial nerve of sciatic through S1 reflex) and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with Clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury.
In terms of his courses he offers, you can attend one at a time if you prefer or book all ten and receive a discount. Once you have completed all the courses you will be able to call yourself a Bodymaster Method ® Practitioner and be registered on his website with the letters 'BmP' after your name.

Hi, i am a marathon runner and have been suffering for more than 3 months from a torn ligament. I was given an ankle binder but that is quite painful to wear. This looks so much better. My friend told me that she got rid of the same injury in two months. She saw your video too. Thank you Mr.Gibbons.

Hi Dusty, thanks for the comments, you can apply the Kinesiology tape and leave on for 5 days so perfect for ultra distance events, if you use zinc oxide type of taping then once it is wet it looses the effect. John

Thank you for posting this. It has been instrumental in getting back out to run as I transition out of a brace from torn ligaments. The support reduced the pain that had me scared to run/worried I'd re-tear. Can't wait to run ultras again! If you have time, would love to know if this would be helpful for me to do before I run ultras on unstable surfaces or if I should go old school with athletic tape. I don't plan to do off road ultras for at least 5 months.

Hello John, thanks for this very helpful video. I have one question though - if you want to stabilze the lateral malleolous, i.e the ankle was sprained in inversion; wouldn't it be more reasonable to start the first tape from the lateral side of the leg and stretch to the medial size? for me it makes sense that in this direrction the tape would "force" the ligaments to get "shorter" and more stabilized. thanks!
@JohnGibbons
@JohnGibbons 11 лет назад
It causes a lift to the skin and allows the space in-between the tissues to increase, this will allow the passage of the blood and the return of the lymph as well as off loading the pain receptor.

This is the best tutorial i have seen for the ankle sprain so many pull from the outside in instead of inside to out on the first strip for the inversion sprain. which is key to get the best support for it.

I would agree with both of you if we were using standard non-stretch tape for treating the ankle sprain with stirrups, however the nature of kinesio taping is the recoil effect of the tape thereby creating a relative inversion tension moment on the tape when taping medial to lateral - Kory, PT

Remarkable to place the first tape on the medial side of the ankle and tape towards the lateral side with an inversion. Kinesiotape always pulls towards the first anker, so now the tape is pulling the ankle towards inversion. I was tought (sportsmasseur and training kinesio) in case of an inversion to place any tape, kinesio or sporttape, from lateral to medial, hope for a substantiated answer.

Hello John, thank you for this video. I understand the routes of the first two lengths of tape, but not the third one. You seem to start it on the medial side, below the malleolus, pass it under the heel to the lateral side, and then somehow it returns to the medial side and wraps partly across the top of the foot. What happens on the lateral side? It can't be seen on the video. Thank you.

Hi Jay, Kinesiology taping is excellent for most musculoskeletal pain so you can try the taping I demonstrate for the ankle. If you use normal athletic taping like zinc oxide then it is better to get a trained therapist to apply as it can cause a problem if not applied correctly. Hope that helps, John

I would tape most of ankle injuries in a neutral position as if you place the ankle into inversion to help for an eversion sprain then you place the lateral ligaments into a potentially weakened position, then you risk another injury. 85% of all ankle injuries are an Inversion sprain so an eversion sprain is quite rare, good luck

Hi John. Really like your videos. One question. I have a just sprained my ankle last week and are beginning to get a full range of motion in my ankle. In a couple of weeks I have a rather important match, which I would like to participate in. So my question is. Is this taping for recovery or can it be used as stabiliser/precaution in a game situation? Or should I instead apply a more "stiff" taping where I go for a more limited range of motion in my ankle? Hope you are able to answer. Regards Rasmus

2 weeks ago I discovered that I'm missing the Ligament that controls the inward rotation of my ankle. 2 days ago I twisted that ankle, and there is persistent pain even today. I'm unsure if I should strap it and if so how, my doctor told me, when I found out about the long standing issue, that I should rest it for a while, to let inflamation in the other ligament and tendons to subside, but did not tell me how to support it in case of injury. Advice would be welcome thank you

Yesterday I had rolled my ankle, lateral inversion. I stepped backwards off a curb and when my foot landed on the ground it rolled. I weight 175lbs and with the downward force plus my weight I'm assuming that the downward force was even heavier. Immediately I felt pain like anyone would and my foot started to swell near the ATL area. I've gone to the hospital, got an xray which I had no broken bones. The doctor said to use the RICE method for a few days and if the pain and swelling do not subside they will do an MRI. I iced it as soon as I got home, took Ibuprofen, and have kept it elevated. When I woke up this morning I was able to somewhat flex my foot upwards which I could absolutely not do yesterday. I still cannot put my weight on it without extreme discomfort. If I put my foot down on the ground with little weight and try to flex my foot or toes it's immediate sharp pain. I do feel like it's gotten better in just 24 hours but I'm trying to get a good idea of when I will be able to return to work. I know you cannot really judge without an examination or even an mri but in your professional opinion with all the info I gave how long do you think it will be before I can work a full 8 hour day with the majority standing? As of right now I can stand without my crutches but with only about 20% of my weight without feeling extreme discomfort. I can somewhat flex my foot upwards but when I try to flex my toes upwards that's when the sharp pain begins. I'm sure I stretched or possibly slightly tore some tendons or ligaments. Your professional opinion would be greatly appreciated of how long you think I'll be out based on what I've told you and from your previous encounters with this injury, patient wise. Thank you.

Can you injure an ankle by standing? I stand for long periods and I cycle everyday. I initially thought I had achilles tendonitis. I literally hopped and hobbled for 2 to 3 months. Doctor told me to rest 3 months, take pain killers. My rest was to not cycle, because my work involved standing everyday. Now the severity of pain has subsided after about 7 to 8 months of not doing any running or cycling and trying to keep off my feet as much as possible. I still feel light to mild pain on ankle after a shift that requires me to stand and shift about quickly for about 3 to 4 hours. But nowhere near the pain initially where touching the ground would make me hop on my left foot. I can now just about walk and jog lightly without it hurting me but am aware that i would need to give my ankles a rub to relieve pain. Ive now located the pain to the Calcaneo fibular ligament, thats where ive always traced the pain to, just underneath the bony part of ankle. I initially thought it was achilles tendonitis because cycling requires that stretching rotating motion but most of the pain was coming from the bony part of ankle and i couldnt stand on tiptoes and i had limited rotation compared to my left foot. Any chance of diagnosis or symptoms? At the moment it is more or less much better than before but last the time i had no pain i got back to riding straight away and the pain came back after a week or 2? This is the first time ive encountered this severity of pain thats kept me off my bike for almost a whole year

Hi, I just found your video. I love using tape for pain. I sprained my right ankle on the 5th of May and they put it in a walking boot for 6 weeks. On the 15th of this month they took me out of the boot and told me to buy some hightop shoes and just walk on it. Sure.....That's sounds all good and stuff because you think. Well, you still have your left foot to compensate. But I don't. The day I sprained my right foot after stepping down unto uneven ground I quickly stepped down with my left foot because my right foot hurt so bad, I needed to get my body weight off it, and broke my left ankle in 3 places plus dislocated it. So needless to say my now unguarded right foot is having to do all the work while my aircasted foot sits on a knee scooter. So when I need to get into the car from my scooter or use the toilet my right foot that's still hurts is twisting causing more pain. I'm also using my right leg do much for support to get down and up from a standing and sitting position that it's causing shin pain. 😱 I'm scared to death I will break my ankle or end up back in a walking cast again. Not to mention the shin pain worries me tremendously. The sprain was an inverted sprain with partial tear and a very small fracture. I've tried 2 braces but I still get uncomfortable pain. I get pain on both sides of my ankle and that's annoying. It hurts to even lay my foot on a pillow or mattress at night.. Should I see a PT for this? I'm not sure how to turn my foot without adding more pain. It's hard to pivot in tennis shoes. Would KT tape bennifit this issue? And how can I make the tape stick to last longer? I've used tape on my thumb and side of hand for strained pain but it wears off fast but of course I'm washing my hand.

I would see a therapist if you can and use the H20 version from Rocktape as will stay on for longer, regards JG

i heard the outter tendon of my ankle snap at work today because i twisted my foot inward and it hurt alot at the time but it went away doesnt hurt its not swollen or bruised yet, its been about 12 hours, its a little bit sore if i twist it again in that dirrection it hurts ..think its torn ? there's no way I'd be able to walk if it was right? does a spranied ankle snap like that ? it sounded like a wooden stick being broken

I'm always spraining my ankle by inversion I've taped it for rugby with zinc oxide tape, seeing a physio to try and get some exercises to strengthen itvup as it won't correct or pull back if I go over on it, is there anyway of taping your own ankle or will you not get the same tension on the tape?
@JohnGibbons
@JohnGibbons 9 лет назад
Hi John, you can tape your own ankle and its worth trying as at least then you don't need to rely on anybody but yourself. You can with time get the correct tension on the tape, good luck

Hey, just a question. I tore a ligament in my ankle about a year ago and I play basketball actively (4-5 times a week). Anyways, swelling never really went away completely, and I sprained it again a few days ago. Would you recommend this method since I have a little hematoma, or the method for the swollen ankle? Keep in mind that I seek for stability while playing, I really want to prevent any more sprains. Or maybe I should just use regular tape? Would really appreciate an answer, thanks.

There are many ways to stabilise an ankle and KTape has between 140-180% stretch so might not be suitable to give true stability to an ankle that has recurrent ankle inversion sprains. The standard athletic tape is probably better if you want that effect, I was also taught another taping system by an Athletic trainer for the Super Bowl teams and his name is Ron O'Neil and he has a 'power flex & power taping method', which is brilliant, so check that out. However for swelling then try the Ktape as might help and swelling causes pressure and pressure causes pain. Hope that helps, regards JG

Savagella we have the same problem and you will have a chance to have chronic ankle sprain when you repeatedly sprain your ankle and a chance to become artritis.

Its worth trying but hard to comment as the tape will only reduce some of your pain symptoms. Good luck, regards JG

I would try and see a therapist like me if I am honest, you can try and reduce the swelling by using the taping technique for oedema that i have on youtube as that will help, take some anti inflammatory medication and ice 3/4 x daily for next 3 days. that should reduce the pain to start with then you need to star some gentle rehab exercises as long as there is nothing else going on with the ankle joint. good luck
