So you made the swap or are currently burn testing with the new ultimate wick. Here are some tips on troubleshooting the ultimate wick and what to do if you're candle is burning too hot or not burning hot enough with the ultimate wick you're testing.
Hot Troubleshooting Tips:
1. ultimate wicks tend to burn hotter than booster wicks
2. try sizing down in width first, then thickness
3. full wax pool should be in 2-3 hours with 1/2 in 4 hours

So I shouldn’t go with your recommendations on wick size on your site? I’ve ordered 200+ wicks using the 12 oz Aura vessels and I’m having issues with black smoke. I ordered based on your recommendations. And I can’t return the wicks and now I’m stuck. I’ve trimmed the wicks down to the size you recommended, and I’m still having the same issues. I’m using the Virgin Coconut Soy wax, .75” 5” crackling booster wick .03 with the 12 oz Aura vessels. I’m so lost and I feel like I’ve waisted money. Yes, I could have ordered the sample wooden wicks, but I trusted your recommendations. I have an appointment scheduled with a MakerPro (member) this Friday.

Hi, I would recommend using the booster .02 wick for any coconut wax blend. And for the aura vessels, .625” BUT maybe purchase the small wick kit to test it out first. Maybe contact customer service regarding the wicks or try to resell them on “the stash”. All the best.

Hi there! We are very sorry to hear of your frustration. The Wick Selection Guide is meant to a guide but is not substitute for conducting burn tests. That is why we recommend purchasing wick sample kits in order to narrow down the right wick for your wax type, fragrance, and vessel size. If your candle is smoking, that means there is too much wick material and you either need to try wicking down in width first, then thickness if the issue persists. Instead of a .03 x .75 try the .03 x .625. Hope that helps!

I’m using 12 oz aura vessels, coconut apricot wax and I’ve tried .02 x .05, .02x.05 booster, .03x.05 and they ALL have black smoke at some point. I don’t get what’s wrong because I’ve sized up AND sized down and nothing helps. I even went down to 8 percent fragrance load.

What if your wicks are doing both? Or rather inconsistently doing so? I have been testing for over a year with different wooden wicks and have not found the perfect wick size. At some point, I believed I had found the correct size, and was excited, but then soon found out that the results were inconsistent. Sometimes the wick would burn a full melt pool at a normal rate, other times the same wick would burn too hot before the 4 hour mark and STILL not reach a full melt pool...and would just start tunneling due to the over-consumption. I soon figured out this could have been related to scents with citrus, so limited myself to non-citrus fragrances, yet still ran into burning issues. I JUST test-burned a candle with my most recently-well-working wick choice, with a non citrus fragrance based candle, only 8%, and it burned fine & slow the first round, then I trimmed it (LOW-below 1/8th) and within about 40 minutes the flame was now big and sooting.. I've wicked up & down, .2's boosters work for my beeswax/coco mix in terms of they burn at a nice calm rate, yet they do not provide quality scent throw, and they also do not reach a full melt pool. So I moved up in size for the .2 and same thing - no hot throw, slightly better melt pool. I've been using .3's and have sized up AND down with those as well. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. It seems like chance and luck at this point unfortunately.

hey there! you've discovered this, but yes, we find fragrance is the most significant factor in difference of wick performance. typically there is roughly an 80/20 rule in our experience. 80% of your fragrances are going to play nice and use the same type of wick in one vessel - but around 20% will likely cause problems and you will need to wick up or down in width OR change thickness entirely in order to properly wick that fragrance choice. wood is also a natural material and like a fingerprint, each piece of wood has it's own unique grain structure. this is one of the reasons we launched the ultimate wick however! the engraved channel down the center of the wick helps to consistently channel the flow of fuel (wax) up the wick. In our testing, this wick burns more consistently compared to both the single ply and booster wooden wicks. If you're using the beeswax coco creme, I would recommend the Ultimate Wick .03. You can also reach us on chat on our website if you would like more detailed help with finding the right wick!
