Are you driving around with your headliner on your head? You don't have to, replacing it is not crazy-difficult. We show you how to replace and repair your headliner. Specifically, we're replacing the headliner in our 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500HD. This is the truck that's in our Shop Truck Build videos. Once the headliner is removed, then it only takes a wire brush to remove all the old deteriorated foam. A cordless drill and a grinder can help speed up the process as well. An old and/or cheap paint gun will work well for spraying the contact cement. Take your time and this is not a very difficult task. We even give you some Pro Tips as well.

Another idea for a video would be on how to keep them from getting destroyed in the first place. For instance, I had thought it was from a roof leak somewhere but actually I think on my vehicles the humidity is because the drains in the firewall get clogged with road dust and leaves and then when it rains it causes moisture to back into the front passenger foot well. After a few years of that the headliner sags.

Additional water/condensation will speed up the process, but they ALL fail at some point. The foam just deteriorates and separates the headliner from the board. Thanks for watching.

28:35 "we will return the drywall screw until we get the correct screw for it" LOL let's not lie to ourselves here, if it's worked this long and you aren't replacing it today that screw is in there for forever. In reality a drywall screw isn't so bad since the original fastener was probably course thread as well as long as the shank size of the drywall screw is the same as the original one. Great video BTW, I need to replace the headliner in my 04 Tahoe so most of the things you showed in the video are relevant to me. However I'm thinking of taking the cleaned headliner board to a professional to finish. Any idea on what that might cost?

I'm pretty sure that on the Crown Vics and Grand Marquis, they glued the headliner board to the top of the car. It's not permanent, but you need to get a long yard-stick (or something else long and skinny. Once you get the headliner ready to drop, pull down one side and slide the ruler in there to sort of cut through the foam/glue. Yours may not be done this way, but I do remember that some years they did this. Go for it! Thanks for watching.

@@Shoptoolreviews I have a 2000 Town Car with no headliner board for this exact reason - it was taken out (by someone else) and was destroyed in the process. I'm not finding a way to replace it with OEM parts and an aftermarket headliner simply doesn't exist. It seems I have to either settle for no headliner, or make one myself.

Very thorough instructions. Do have one question. I watched the first 8 minutes and I didn't hear any instruction for disconnecting battery for the airbags. Is this really not nessisarry?

Man I did my 05 avalanche and it looks awesome but that is one nasty job and is a total pain in the butt to get back in place

How much time do you have to work the fabric in place before the glue start to set?

Are canned spray glued like 3m and permatex sufficient or should you only use contact stuff?

With all due respect I'd think about changeling the title a bit, "You can do it..." I'll agree with that if you have some proficiency with tools, fabric, patience and an eye for detail but, "It's so easy..." I'll have to disagree on that one. Sure working with the material isn't that hard once you do ten or twenty of them the rub comes with getting the shell out of some vehicles. Do a lot of research on how to get the shell out before you even consider doing this yourself. The worse I've come across requires that the rear window be removed plus keep in mind that some cars have side curtain air-bags up in that headliner that can ruin your day. Good instructions and technique shown working with the material which can be a bitch. Keep it rolled up never fold it, creases will not come out.

I'm looking for a how to on replacing a headliner when the headliner board is ruined. I can't find a replacement board and I'm seriously about to just make one out of sintra and EVA.

what if my headliner fabric is in great shape? Can I clean it up and reattach it? I dont need it to be perfect and I don't want to spend more than I have to keeping this old junker looking presentable, but also don't want to go through the process and have it fail right away.
@Shoptoolreviews

No, never reuse the fabric, it won't work. The glue will bleed through the fabric, and it needs to be replaced anyway. Thanks for watching.
