The video is wrong you cross a white line during the turn you are meant to wait behind the white line. Its also wrong to turn while another car is turning that can cash a crash you have to wait for all the cars to turn.
@DrivingSchoolWA that's what I saw happen today at the intersection of Berwick Street and Canning Highway a car was in the middle waiting to turn without the arrow, 2 cars also went in the middle to wait with the first car to go all at once 3rd car nearly got stranded in the middle
keep an eye on the lights, wait for 1 person to go if he is in the middle, don't over shoot the white lines, once you are in the middle give way for oncoming vehicles once the red light is show the vars will stop, go???
@DrivingSchoolWA - What should be done when you are waiting in front of the white line at the intersection giving way to traffic from opposite direction till it is safe to cross, but then there is a pile-up on the other side with lots of opposite oncoming vehicles turning left and there is no space left for you to turn and fit in that lane anymore when it is safe for you turn or the light has jsut turned amber/red. If you commit and turn when the green light turned amber/red, then you will be literally blocking the intersection as well as the pedestrian crossing. also you are stranded ahead of you white solid line and can't reverse back? What should be done in similar situations?
I learned something really valuable at 4:28. I wasn’t expecting any car in that opposite right turn lane to be going straight ahead, but the black car did. I guess it’s important to anticipate some cars heading straight were waiting behind the cars going right, so even if there are no other cars going straight that you have to give way to, there might be some sneaky ones that appear! Hope that makes sense!
I strongly believe that all licensed drivers pass a theory exam every 5 years. A practical exam every 10. Consistent TV and media Ads in WA showing a road rule/road use in practice. I feel that would have a far more profound affect on road Saftey than scare campaigns.
So many drivers in Perth need to watch this video, incredibly anoying when you're stuck behind someone who doesn't understand the rule. Drivers in the UK are considerably better than Aussies
Today I was moving right lane, while it was yellow I crossed the lane but my back tyres still on the line. Unfortunately there is signal jumping camara. I AM SCARED NOW
Great explanation on turning right. I was especially keen to see the last minute of your video where you turn in major traffic having to wait and the lights turning red. I’m teaching my daughter to drive and am finishing it very hard to explain this!!! I will show her this video 😀👍🏻
Great explanation however this is the stupidest rule and the cause of so many accidents. Mainly when in the middle of the road and the light turns amber and the approaching car speeds up and the turning car assumes they are slowing down. Being from nz they have no traffic lights that operate like this , green arrow turn, red arrow stop, no confusion, no accidents
Hey, I'm from a small town and I'm not familiar with traffic lights. If you proceed to the middle where the square is and the light turns orange, if the traffic coming from the other direction doesn't stop are you safe to just wait for the flow to stop? Or does the traffic from the other side get a red light for 3 seconds?
Sorry dumb question! What if you get caught by the red light while waiting for the traffic to clear in the middle of the intersection? Do you still proceed with the turn? Thank you!
When the light changes, focus on the traffic from the opposite direction and see if they are stopping or speeding through. It's very easy to judge. Once the traffic from the oipposite direction stops, you must clear the intersetion. Drive safely!
0:58 For this reason, the rule at an intersection is not just to give way to oncoming traffic but also to vehicles still in the intersection that may be completing their turn. The mistake drivers make while waiting for a safe oncoming gap is thinking that now that their light is red, they cannot finish the turn. When in fact, they MUST finish the turn if they are in the intersection. Back in the 80s, I was waiting to leave an intersection and was T-boned when the other driver's light turned green. As he was already on the move when it changed, he went through at speed and hit me. As a young driver, I learned the hard way about the above rule. The road rules are designed so that NO DRIVER SHOULD BE LEFT STRANDED IN AN INTERSECTION if followed correctly.
Although the rules state: "If a traffic-control signal facing a driver displays a circular green signal, the driver must, in accordance with these regulations and if it is safe to do so - (a) proceed straight ahead; or (b) turn left; or (c) turn right (including making a U turn if permitted)." The important thing here is, "if it is safe to do so", the Green light car should have slowed and allowed the other vehicle to complete their turn.
I think this scenario should be in all tests if possible becaue the number of drivers who either don't know or just don't do this correctly is quite common.
I Would have kept my wheels straight while waiting also because you never know if someone’s going to hit you from behind then you won’t get pushed into oncoming traffic and when you do turn, don’t dilly dally and just go !.
Great video! The only thing I want to add is, watch out for pedestrians who are going to cross the road you're turning into. It happens often enough that people see a gap, think they are fast enough to turn right, but then overlook a pedestrian crossing the road and have to wait in the middle of the road.
I was in a similar situation today in Sydney as given in the video under "Time of crises" and had to move quickly when the red light fell. I was a bit anxious if I broke the law and if a camera caught me, and I lose my license. I'm new to driving in Australia. But this video really clarified my doubts.
0:50 when stopped you should not have you car pointing in that direction. It should be facing up the road. If a driver hits you from behind that will throw you into oncoming traffic potential life threatening. Facing up the road eliminates that.
This is why Perth Intersections sre dumb.. should implement a Michigan Style turning manueavor, where right turns can only be made by going forward, into a little U turn pocket lane to turn back and turn left.. Otherwise just have a turning lane and a turning arrow.
I wanted to turn right over a tram track to do a uturn. Usually there is a green arrow. Tonight, there was no arrow - only a green circle. I waited a full cycle - green, red and then green again and still no arrow. So I proceeded when there was a break in the oncoming traffic. I'm not sure if that was correct, but I was holding the line up behind me.. felt very unsure about it. Maybe the arrow was not working?
Hi Steve, with intersections like this especially the ones you need to move forward past the solid line to turn right, can we still proceed turning even if the light turns red? As its a busy road? I failed my driving test yesterday because I didn’t turn and stucked in the middle cos I thought can’t turn when lights changed to amber and then red. My first test and its so frustrating. I didn’t know this rule 😔
So what if you’ve been waiting in the middle and it’s very busy and it goes red for you? You say you have 3 seconds but isn’t it illegal to go through red light or does it not count because you’re already over the white line?
thank you so much! by the way, do you have any idea or is it 100% that you will receive a fine if you didn’t stopped in a red light or if you proceeded despite the red light?
The guy shows he turns most of the time when the light is still green. If you goes half way out of the traffic lights, it won't matter the traffic light behind you turns red as you have passed the line when it was green. There is times when it's red and you still behind the line, obviously you have to wait till it turns green.
I’ve been driving since I was 19. 33 now. Never crashed. I live in England, however I’m spending a month in australia and hiring a car. I’m an experienced driver but I’m nervous about driving there. Is it exactly the same as England?
@@DriftNick yeah, just the irony isn’t lost on me that a video explaining how to follow proper road rules, hasn’t noticed someone running a red light. Maybe my irony level is set too low. 🤔
@SrivingSchoolWA that's what happened to me the other day at the intersection of Hill View Terrace and Berwick Street the light when green I was turning right the red arrow dropped I had to move up into the middle and wait it was that busy I had to wait for the lights to change orange/red to complete my turn 😅
Let’s add some situation to it: when you are half way crossing, suddenly there are two ladies run and trying to cross the road (the directions you are turning). One lady pulled the other one back but she decided to run and crossed. The other one stood there waiting, what would you do? Stop or go? That’s where I failed. 🥺
Once you've entered the intersection, you can take as long as you need to exit it, the point was that once your light goes red, you've got about 3 seconds before it lets the cross traffic go, so you probably want to get out of the intersection before that. However, there are situation like when the intersection is blocked and you can't make it through, or a bunch of cars run the red light and you might need to wait longer - however these are extreme rare. Most of the time you'll be fine once you can be sure the cars across from you are going to stop at the light.
This is probably the most common scenario at these types of intersections as your view is blocked to the oncoming traffic going straight by the other cars turning right. To answer your question...you do NOT stay in the middle of the road until it goes green again as you will be then blocking all the traffic on the crossroad. As shown later in the video, it is ok to turn right on a red signal if you are already in the middle as you have around 3secs until the crossroad lights turn green. Both oncoming lanes more often than not will be stopped (as the lights turned red for them as well) in front of you allowing you safe passage to turn right. This is the same if there is another car from the oncoming direction who has 'half completed' their right turn
@@vantong9102 No, red light cameras only take photos of cars crossing the stop line after the light turns red. The stop line isnt where you are in the middle
Practice your clutch control, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I will shoot the video on that topic soon. Thanks a million for your support
@DrivingSchoolWA I was at a similar type of intersection near where I live where I was turning left at traffic lights with a red arrow that disappeared when light turned green, in that case you can just go can't you?
At 5:01, should the white/silver car in front of you have waited a little longer to give way to the oncoming black car? As a learner I probably wouldn’t have cut in front of it.
@DrivingSchoolWA I'm getting better and more confident how to do this! Your videos and your lessons definitely have helped me! I love your work Steve keep up the awesome work!
You wait until it's clear then make the turn, make sure traffic on the other side is actually stopping before turning, doesn't matter if you have to wait until after it's red to turn, he explains it at 6:50.
@@DrivingSchoolWA That was a very helpful video. But I was wondering about the details of turning right at the traffic lights with the pedestrian light flashing. How does a driver proceeds with that scenario? Cheers
I don't have experience in driving in complicate traffic lights, turning right n left some do have arrow that's mean I can wait for a green arrow, some do not have arrow and have solid green light will wait for a free space. Please correct me if am wrong.
I faced the last situation during my test, it was about getting red and no cars was coming through intersection, and then I proceed. The assessor took me back to the centre and said it was not allowed to proceed into the middle of intersection and wait there while the cars are still coming from the opposite direction. Weird😢I really got confused, go in the middle or stop before the line. Jesus.
I'm into the comment section just to check if anyone told this. I'm glad that the instructor told this. Processing to the middle of the intersection and hoping the traffic would clear is risky. Even though the lights change at the time time for the cars coming in the opposite directions, sometimes the cars in the opposite direction may not slow down and utilise all the time until the lights turn red. You have crossed the white line when it was green and the lights where red before you crossed the intersection, technically this shouldn't lead to a ticket as you didn't cross the red line but practically you would end up in middle of the intersection and cross it when it's red.
hi friend i have a confusion is that my overseas drive license name is one letter is different from my passport just like this my name on passport is Amber and name on overseas license is Ambar its mean A and E is difference and i want to use my passport name is Australia that is Amber so my question is that Vicroad is accept my overseas license as minor different spell and all other things is same as my passport name, Thanks
Question: when at traffic lights with no arrow, I'm wanting to right and car coming opposite direction indicating he is turn left but turning into a double lane road. Is the person turning left meant to turn into the closest lane to them so the person turning right and also turn and driving in to the further most lane? Or must you wait until that vehicle has turned left?
If your light goes red, the one controlling that opposite traffic must turn red as well, so you just wait until you know they are going to stop then you can go. However, if the traffic blocks the intersection or they run the red light, you wait until there is space then you can go.
Hi, if you are in an intersection and the light changes while you are waiting, wait for the oncoming traffic to stop and finish your turn as soon and safely as possible. The rule is that YOU MUST complete your turn. Consider the potential disaster if you don't. For your protection, there is also a rule that says that you must not enter a blocked intersection. This includes by cars waiting to turn and by cars completing their turn. No matter what colour your traffic light is and which direction they are going. Also, NEVER enter an intersection where there is no clear exit, ie banked up traffic waiting at a railway crossing. In this case you must wait behind the line until there is a space for you on the other side. DO NOT be intimidated by the a55hole honking his horn behind you because it's your safety you are responsible for. Cheers
