Great video. Years ago I used to run a wire coat hanger through the heating element tube. What manufacturers do now is put a metal screen inside so you can't do that. I take a drill bit and drill out that screen careful not to drill through the side. Then you can run a hanger wire all the way through. The coffee manufacturers do this on purpose so you have to buy a new maker. Everything is a scam these days. Sometimes I get around it sometimes I don't :)

I knew that after 5 seconds you identified the problem with my snazzy red & black Mr. Coffee that my dearest son bought for his Mom as a Christmas present. So here's another project for me that goes on the list. I'll just use my percolator on the stove again. You're terrific and I've subscribed to your page. Thank you!!

Fantastic! Inspired me. Gave me confidence to tackle on my own! Love the "security screw" issue and your total disdain for the manufactured obsolescence. Did almost same procedure on a similar Mr. Coffee model. Immediate results! Folks those little rubber feet will pop out and pop back in...don't be too gentle. Keep track of which hose you take off. My model has a red rubber tube with a back-flow valve in it, I believe. Don't mix it with the other. Otherwise, have at it. What is the worst that can happen? You trash it, concede and spend the bucks for a new model. So, not high risk. BUT high reward to fix it yourself. I feel like Magnum PI now. Thanks! Love the can-do, all-American, fix-it ethos.

First of all thanks for posting this video. I had the same problem with my Mr Coffee. I tried running some CLR through it but it still was brewing really slow. So after watching your video I decided to crack it open and sure enough it was exactly the same inside as your coffee pot. I pulled the hoses and checked the heating element but everything looked spotless. The problem I had was with the ball valve inside the inlet tube. If you shake it, you should be able to here the little ball inside. I was able to extract it and give it a good cleaning and insert it back into the hose. Works great now!

An old video I know, but the message is paramount, the last part about the Why. Seems as though people don't understand that part much these days, far easier to go to Walmart and get a 'cheap replacement'. Rather, in my opinion, they know full well why one should be repairing their own devices, it is just easier to go get a new one. They are comfortable. In any case, thank you, this is great, I appreciate it.

Had the same problem - took 45 minutes to make six cups of coffee! Did the vinegar but to no avail! I watched the video and it was exactly the same thing. I had to drill through the blockage (I made sure not to drill through the metal tube) and soak it with vinegar for a few minutes. Put it back together after washing out the vinegar and now it works! Thanks for the video - nicely done!

I admire the idea that you fix something before you throw it. At least this is the way we where brought up at our house, my brothers were fixing stuff all the times and there was no need to call a handyman. I was having the same problem with my machine, did the vinegar solution and automatic cleaning. So far it works, but still makes that bubbly noise. I might fix it your way. Thank you for your help :)

Thank you for posting that video. Coffee pot came apart just like in video, and I think my problem was coffee grounds in the check valve. Design flaw in pot allows coffee grounds to overflow back into water supply tank if basket or pot is misplaced(as happened to this pot). There is no filter to keep them out of water intake line. Red hoses are made of soft rubber and easy to remove. Check valve is inserted into cold water supply line, and can be removed by applying compressed air to heater end of hose. Cup your hand over end of hose so you don't loose valve when it shoots out. Toss out those "tamper proof" screws and replace them with phillips. Corporations have flooded our marketplace with shoddy imported crap, and have no regard for the American worker or consumer! Better to fix it than give them more of your hard earned money.

+Hammerthumb1 You're welcome and I thank you for posting the detailed and helpful comment. I replaced the coffee maker in this video when the heating element opened up (a fatal problem). I found an eighties, US made machine at a garage sale and have been using it ever since. If it ever fails I'll fix, it but I doubt if it will.

I've saved some other coffee makers, but this video helped me actually get to my slow Mr. Coffee. Any particular amount of vinegar has a limited capacity to dissolve the calcium (usually) clogging the tubes. So renewing the vinegar every few hours makes sense. An easy way to put the vinegar into the tube is using a couple of feet of plastic tubing (available in a hardware store). Just suck up some vinegar and put it in the cold end of the heating tube (held to make a U), until it comes out the the hot end. I found drill bits to be useful in clearing a lot of the calcium from the hot end. Not in a drill...just in the fingers.There are probably better chemicals than vinegar, but we have vinegar at home, when the urge to take the coffee maker apart strikes.

This method also works to get larger debris out of the intake tubing. Somehow I got a bit of paper towel into the reservoir, and it got sucked through the intake and was preventing most of the water from entering the heating element. It was sitting right in front of the little plastic one-way valve inside one of the rubber tubes. Works like a charm now once I got that cleaned out.

One basic, learned from the days when you banged on the tube tv to fix the picture... I almost tried unscrewing and checking the tubes, but decided to turn the coffee maker upside down and smacked it - figuring the (bearing ball?) inside the valve might be stuck: that got the light to shut off and the coffee maker was quiet as it had been while percolating! I appreciate the mechanical explanation of the construction of the machine- thanks!

…and what’s funny is getting a reply the same day I had to use the technique again, after my white vinegar descale process failed to make the light go out on both my coffee makers (the other is a Keurig). On the other, I also unplugged for a moment, then it was happy again.

My coffee was not coming out at all so I tried the easiest thing first and banged the empty potless coffeemaker twice on the counter and now it works. Must have been the check valve. Thanks for the hint. I don’t have a hard water problem because I use filtered water so I thought the check valve was probably stuck.

thanks. Nice step by step in depth fix video. I fixed mine by not taking it apart at all..There's a hole at the bottom of the water intake reservoir where you pour the water in, I used some wire and stuck it in there, and cleaned out the gunk. The inlet hole was clogged with coffee gunk. Then it worked again fine. I then just ran water thru the coffee maker several times till the water ran clear. Good luck.

Thanks for this video! I was looking for instructions on an ancient JR4 model but this looked pretty close. The water was pouring straight through so I opened it and sure enough, a hose was loose. But there was a mysterious spring I didn't know where to put back. Mine didn't have a valve but you made me go look at the hot hose and viola! It had a spring inside. It was also very clogged up so I did like you show and soaked the heating element in vinegar overnight. I also used a small screwdriver and paper clip to dig out more calcium. When I put it back together and tried it with vinegar, it made all the right noises and got hot where it should but nothing came out. I put in more vinegar but it seems to have quit brewing. You stated your heating element went out shortly after. Could there be something inside the heating tube that we messed up? I'm letting this one sit and cool down right now and will turn it back on later. Sheryl
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 9 лет назад
ssgiddyup Sounds like you did some good work here. If it is heating up, then your heating element is good. I would suspect there is still something stuck in there keeping the heated water from moving along. I can't see how cleaning the line this way could open the heater, which is isolated from the water chamber by the chamber wall. Good luck and don't give up...yet!

The Original Mechanic I forgot to tell you! I took it apart again and even got the top off. After cleaning everything, the culprit was still build up at the hot water exit. You could have cleaned those valves out without taking apart- you just run 4 cups of straight vinegar and shut off machine after 3 cups of the vinegar gets flushed through- leave last cup inside machine and let set for a day or two - than rub last cup through - then run a full pot of clean water through machine to flush out particles - works like a charm

A pipe cleaner, now found in craft department; those fuzzy flexible wires might help before accumulated so heavy.

I have that exact coffee maker and now it completely stopped pumping after I put CLR diluted in water. Do you think this will help? Iv'e only had it 6 months and have used the auto clean once

If it isn't pushing through any water at all, I would wonder if the heating element is bad, or a thermal fuse blew or the check valve is plugged. The heating element in the one shown in this video eventually failed. It looks like you will need to pop it open and have a look...

I am really confused by how you removed the security screws, could you please go into more detail?
@aaahandy
@aaahandy 9 лет назад
There is a little nipple looking thing in the middle of the head to prevent the torx tool from fitting in. Now you can find the proper tool to remove them. But he is using a small screw driver that will fit in between the above mention nipple and the side of the head of screw just well enough to remove. Once removed just replace with a screw with a regular head.

My model is the cuisinart cbc-00 coffee maker….same thing with mine. How does that back flow go back inside the hose? -> #* or
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 2 года назад
I ran water through it when it was out to confirm direction for reassembly and just seated the hoses over it.

@@TheOriginalMechanic yes sir I figured out this am. I had installed it backwards but easy fix. Now I’m soaking the system in vinegar and will do it for 3 days as well. Mine is so caked on but made some progress today.

@@TheOriginalMechanic mine is still clogged up after 3 days of soaking I guess I will put more vinegar in it. On one side it’s like halfway very cleared but the other side only can get like 1/4 of the wire in.

Glad you got it fixed. Have to wonder, if you would have just run some vinegar through it and let it sit for a couple of days without disassembling, it would have done the trick and saved the extra work.

I bought a cheap backup but it does the same thing gurgles and collects in the basket doesn't even drip none of them work. So I bought a French press.

Wouldn't CLR work on that? The same way basically that some multi surface calcium build up that would clear that out
