How to Understand Pickleball Ball Spins so that You can take Action Before the Bounce of the Ball?
As you advance in the sport, you need to understand how to read ball spins so that you can move properly to the ball without having to wait for the ball to bounce. Often if you wait for the ball to bounce it is too late to get ready in the proper position.
This video will show you: 1- how to recognize the type of spin that a shot will impact on the ball and 2- what the different spin (under or top) will do to the ball once it bounces.
You can use this information to make sure you are in a better position from where to hit the ball.

Underspins don't react the same on every surface. With a slick surface, backspin can skid like it's on ice. At our gym with a wood floor, I stay back further for backspin shots than I do for top spin.

We really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. It does help to see the different set ups on the shots.

Wow! What a great explanation verbally and visually of the different spins. The comparisons that you made with hitting and receiving are so helpful. I have never seen a video on the "spins" that is so useful! Thanks!

@@BestPickleballCoach This is definitely one of the best videos I've seen on a given topic (and I watch a lot of PB videos!). Looking forward to applying it on the court and moving up at least half a level!

Tony really enjoy the videos. I see you film in a lot of different locations I’m an RV’r and want to incorporate pickle ball into my trip planning would appreciate you identifying the locations. I’ve got a couple of the apps but nothing like actually seeing facilities on your videos. Thanks

Tony, I find that when someone is putting a lot of spin on the ball, if I don't tighten my grip pressure (from say 3 to 5 or 6), and the ball hits my paddle a little off center I loose a lot of energy in my return because of the paddle torque or "twisting" caused by the spinning ball. Gripping a little tighter better mitigates the twisting action. Do you agree?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 3 месяца назад
That is an option. You can also try using lead tape as a ballast on your paddle. Be on the lookout - we have just the video for you dropping later this week.

On any sort of smoother surface, a driven backspin shot will skid, not check up. Might be good to talk about that possibility as many folks are playing on gym floors indoors this time of the year. My slice/underspin service return skids much faster as it doesn't check up at all...flat trajectory with underspin equals skid/slide. Must consider surface and trajectory when talking about the bounce of a spin shot, particularly a slice.

I have a problem with side spins. I can recognize that they have hit with a slice but i don’t know which way it is going so I yell slice and get myself or my partner extra ready to move, but we still don’t know which way. Could you do a video on that?

Whichever side of the body that the person spinning the ball hit it from (from your perspective looking at them), this is the direction that the ball is going to spin towards.

When somone puts spin on a ball I am finding it almost impossible to hit a spin shot return and control my shot. Do you recommend not hitting spin on spin, so to speak?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach Год назад
You can counter the spin but it is a learned skill for sure.

What about sidespins O.o..
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach Год назад
Hi Candi - those are not as common, except on the serve. But same concept generally. The ball will carry in the way it is spinning.

Spins and slices are for newbies, they think they have the magic bullet to outwitt the other player. It's novel for a very very short time. Anyone just below or above intermediate will easily see the spin, and compensate for it in their return. It is a very small component of the game once one has some experience at control and direction of returns. Mainly for comedic effect on a windy day..

I am 50/50 with you. More advanced players can certainly read the spins easier. But the spins themselves do have objectives that they accomplish for those more advanced shots. Something to be added - but only when ready for it. Appreciate the comment.

"Anyone just below or above intermediate will easily see the spin, and compensate for it in their return" - The same with tennis. I'd say it's more comedic from the other perspective. When playing a beginner and you impart spin, it's like you've just performed a magic trick.

Donna Vercautrenpottery barn Tony does go a bit fast, but has such good info! It may help to hit the three dots above the video and choose a slower playback speed. Give it a try!

I would have liked to see the opponents returns closer up. It's hard to make out the difference from so far away. Next time you do this film closer to the opponent. We don't need to your serve close up. Otherwise good video.

So i thought you were always supposed to watch the ball...what you are saying is watch the opponent's paddle..am i correct ?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach Год назад
You watch the ball when you are hitting it. It’s ok to watch opponent paddle and body to get clues as to the shot coming your way.
