In this video I will show you how to upgrade the 64GB EMMC to 512GB SSD on your Steam Deck.

You will need pry tools (ideally metal) and a USB C flash drive or USB A flash drive as long as you have a USB C hub or USB C to USB A dongle.
Make sure no MicroSD card is inserted as it can get damaged or broken when disassembling the Steam Deck.

For anyone that might run into a few issues I had? After you reimage and the deck reboots you might not be able to use any buttons. Don't panic, use the touch screen to navigate the menus; once it installs all the updates everything will get back to normal. Also when it tries to install and update it might get stuck on "starting deck update download" There should be a progress bar at the bottom of the screen, if there is not touch the B button back prompt on the screen to go back and then click your wifi router again and it should start the update process.

Fantastic tutorial, thank you. I've experienced a minor issue however. After I've swapped my 64GB for SK Hynix BC711 512GB I was stuck in the install loop. Luckily on Reddit I've found this trick: long press on power button turned the steam deck off. Then a combination of volume up + power brought up boot manager. There I had 2 entries for my SSD: 1. Steam OS SK Hynix 2. SK Hynix Based on the advice above, I've selected the second option (without Steam OS) and it finished the installation after a while. Hopefully this helps somebody that'll have the same issue...

Thanks for sharing this. This the most detailed upgrade tutorial for steam deck that I have watched so far. Every step was covered including the rufus tool and prying the cover. For those upgrading the SSD it'll take around 15 to 20 minutes to boot to the 4 selection main screen.

And I checked the other menu, and it does show the storage there in MB(20000mb). And did your logo ever go away on the screen to just a dark screen? After clicking the USB for the boot up device?

Maybe try a small flat head? If it doesn't turn then maybe not worth trying as it can strip the head and won't open at all.

courts banned that by law, also, its intendd to be user upgradeable, bit if you damage it while doing the upgrade they will likely not honor damage done that way, such as damaging the battery ribbon cable

@@EricCarter12 yep, did not see it but was still able to continue, also most of my controls didn't work during installation giving me another small heart attack that maybe I shorted out the board... After installing all was fine tho. Glad I had to do this once 😅

This was so useful. Thank you. I will also add my personal experience onto this. BUY A REPAIR KIT, THIS WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER AND ITS LIKE $5 Newer models do not have the "Metal aluminium sticker" (Thank you Valve) The battery can be unplugged easier if you pull it from one side and then the other, kind of "wiggling it" The aliminium foil will be tighter on your new ssd, be careful and gentle. If in the Boot Manager the SSD is not shown, don't worry, proceed as normal. After the reimage everything should be fine. When connecting to WiFi, use 2.4 Ghz instead of 5Ghz, by some reason the 5 Ghz causes a loop of updates that never ends.

My SSD didnt show up in that menu so I launched desktop mode and reimaged through there. I didnt know if it would show but it shows up in the storage menu just fine so hopefully I did everything correctly.

Since it is clearly a m.2. ssd, why does Valve call it an emmc module? those look completely different, rather like micro sd cards.

I'm assuming there is an eMMC module on the board that fits into the m.2 slot. It would be the most economical, you don;'t want to waste PCB space with an eMMC spot that won't be used on the other models. The other option is to make separate PCBs for the lower model, which again is wasted engineer time. It's probably cheaper to pay an extra few dollars for an m.2 slot fitted eMMC.

So I want to try something crazy next. An USB C dongle with power passthrough and an external old school 3.5 inch HDD directly paired with the deck for swapping files in and out quickly. The idea is to basically just write once to the HDD and only copy to Steam Deck when I want a game on there. When I get bored of the game, delete it from the deck but keep it on HDD in case I want to swap it back in. The time saved vs downloading from the internet will be huge. I guess this can be taken one step further with a portable external SSD. Might even make sense if tethered to a wall outlet to just play directly from external SSD

@@TechThusiast would be awesome, I hope they come down in price a little more. I only bought the deck because Nvidia GPUs are still too expensive so I said just forget PC gaming, but with these steam deck mods it's starting to creep up in price to a decent GPU territory.
