Spring is one of my favorite times of year, but with spring comes time to break out the mower or bush hog. To most the thought of mowing is dreadful. With the knowledge and proper equipment it can make that dreaded chore much more enjoyable.
For fields and pastures a typical mowers will not do the job. These areas are better suited for a bush hog. They are designed for thick brush and grass even small trees.
If you have not had someone show you how to properly attach a bush hog. This task can be daunting. When I was younger and first starting out this was a great challenge. Thankfully I had family members who were or had been farmers to turn to for advice and help. Now that I am older and more experienced. I am so thankful that I had others to lean on for these challenges. My hope is to show others how I was taught to properly attach and use a bush hog.
My tractor is a 1949 Ford 8n. Handed down to me from my Great Grandfather. It may be just close to my heart, but I love these tractors. They are inexpensive to purchase as well as run. If you are a little bit mechanically inclined. You can fix just about anything on these tractors. Mainly due to the vast resources on the internet.
With all machines they do have there own weaknesses. The 8n’s is over heating, but if it is ran properly this is no obstacle. Through proper maintenance and handling these tractors can do about anything.

Thank you for posting this video. I bought a 1952 8n and I wanted to bush hog and snow plow with a back blade with it. I do own a LS 40hsp diesel but I just love the older tractors.

Great video. If you don’t use the over running clutch, the pushing of the mower will twist and break the pto output shaft. Trust me, I learned the hard way.
@FishHuntCookTinker

I can imagine that it puts a lot of stress on it. I used it without the clutch a few times in the beginning. I almost went in the pond and that was it. Never used it without one since. Thanks for watching!

That over running clutch is a lifesaver. The county used to buy the 8Ns without the clutch, for mowing the roadsides, but would return quickly once they found out they could not stop the tractor without it. I worked at a Ford dealer in the late 60s. We were selling them back then for two grand, sight unseen.

It really is. I mowed for a few months without one because my PTO shaft was to long. I will never do that again. That is amazing, I wish I could buy a new tractor for $2k now! You would be lucky to get a lawnmower for that now. Thank you for watching!

Thank you for watching and subscribing! You may already know this, but I wanted to tell you just in case you didn’t. Put some weight on the lift and make sure it has proper lifting power and doesn’t knock. This will tell you if the hydraulic pump is good. Also put it in high gear and take off down the road. If the front tires wobble violently the steering box is bad. Make sure oil is not in the radiator fluid. Or coolant in the oil. That would mean a blown head gasket or cracked block or head. Those are the more difficult and costly things to fix on a 8n. Most everything else isn’t to bad. Hope this helped somewhat and thanks again for watching! Good luck.

what happens if you turn the pto off before you turn the tractor without the clutch?
@thadwichlacz6409
@thadwichlacz6409 4 года назад
With running the tractor at higher throttle, how do you keep it from jumping off the start? With my 8N, if I start out in 1st or 2nd gear at half throttle or more, it bounces the front end. I'm not engaging the clutch fast at all and it still jumps aggressively. Could it be a sticky clutch or am I doing something completely wrong? I've driven tractors all my life and the only two that have jumped as bad as they do are both my 8N and 9N. Any advice would be great. Nice video btw!
@FishHuntCookTinker
@FishHuntCookTinker 4 года назад
That’s the way my grandparents 8n is. I start off at lower throttle and push it back up as soon as it engages. Seems like the newer the clutch the worse it is. My clutch is old as dirt and I don’t have that issue. Thank you for watching!

You have a chain hook up system on that bush hog. I could see it when you hooked up to the lift arms that you called "Draw bars". Why are you not using it and take the top link off??
@FishHuntCookTinker
@FishHuntCookTinker 2 года назад
The chains were added my someone before I got it. They are just to keep the bush hog from leaking down while running. I have used them a time or two, but they are worn badly. To take the place of the top link they would have to be repositioned. They connect just below the drawbar on the bush hog. Thanks for watching!
@smokeybailey3080

I saw the chains also I would start using them some day you will run in a hole and the tractor wheels will be off the ground and you are stuck
@colten1d
@colten1d 10 месяцев назад
Chain limiters. Sets the cutting height of the brush hog. Also gives the brush hog upward travel on hilly land, which the fixed top link will not. I've bent bars on the bush hog.

I was able to find a 1956 Ferguson TO30 freshly painted for $2500. Great Tractor That will work hard and do most anything a new tractor will do. I got a bit of backlash for buying and clean tractor to get dirty . Perception here is buy a dirty tractor to have to clean. Not sure this concept.
@FishHuntCookTinker
@FishHuntCookTinker 3 года назад
Those old Ferguson’s are good tractors. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on it. Best thing is you got it for what a few monthly payments would be on a new tractor. A tractor is made to get dirty no matter how shiny it is. That is one reason I have never restored mine. Along with wanting to leave it like it was when my Great Grandfather had it. I hope it does well for you. Thank you for watching!

@@FishHuntCookTinker After checking it out better. It's a TO - 35 So it has the Splint Trans 3 and R lower end more torque. I really like this feature. Looks like it will be handy when in comes to running a tiller and box blade. More aggressive and efficient without the high end. I'll have this for the rest of my life. I am also looking for the Ferguson emblem for the hood missing that. Not sure where I would find one. Perhaps there is a swap online to find things like that

My Ferguson is about the same thing. I think it's around a 1950 model. I've been using it 10 years. It has the over running clutch. A man told me not to bush hog without one, they can kill you. Said the steering wheel can break your fingers if you hit a rock and are holding it wrong. I guess he found out the hard way.
@FishHuntCookTinker

Those were the best suggestions you can get for about all the 50’s tractors with out power steering. I have had the steering wheel hit my thumb so hard I thought it was broke. It didn’t take long to learn to keep your thumbs out side the wheel. Thank you for watching!

@FishHuntCookTinker
@FishHuntCookTinker 2 года назад
If it overheats a little probably nothing. A lot can cause major issues. You can blow a head gasket or crack a block. This can cause all sorts of issues. Coolant in your oil is one of them. Over time if not caught it can ruin the bearings in your motor. Then you have to rebuild your motor. Thanks for watching!

Really shouldn't use a grade 8 bolt. A grade 5 at the most. You want the bolt to shear if you hit anything. You do not want to twist your pto or cause internal damage. You could also by a slip clutch and that would take care of it also.
@FishHuntCookTinker
@FishHuntCookTinker 2 года назад
I think you are talking about the bolt I use to attach the PTO to the overrun clutch? This is a splined connection. The only force applied to the bolt is holding the PTO shaft from sliding off the splined clutch shaft. Personally I’d rather break something than have the PTO shaft come flying off. Now the connection from the PTO shaft to the gearbox is not splined. There I can definitely see the importance of a grade 5 bolt. A slip clutch probably would be a lot easier on the tractor. I thought about one years ago, but didn’t expect the bush hog to last this long! Thank you for commenting and watching!
