A overrun clutch for a Ford 8n is like a emergency break on a car. Without you can just keep rolling! Even if there is a ditch or pond in the way. This $70 piece of equipment can save your life! I highly recommend always using one when bush hogging with a Ford 8n.
A overrun clutch allows the force of your tractors PTO shaft to be applied to your implement. While stopping the centrifugal force from the rotation of your bush hog being applied to the tractor. Without this the rotation of you mower will continue to push your tractor. Depending on the amount of brake applied and integrity of the brakes it can be five to twenty feet! Even with the best brakes you can not stop the tractor. It will continue to roll. Even if you stand on the brakes. Which in my early days I did once to keep from going into a pond.
Every one knows Ford 8n’s are not known for their breaks. Especially the 49’s. One of the main issues are hydraulic/transmission fluid leaking through the axle seals into the brakes.
A overrun clutch can accomplish 2 things. One is helping stop your tractor. The other is a size adapter. 8n’s originally came with a 1 1/8” PTO shaft. Almost all midsize equipment uses 1 3/8 size PTO shafts.
You can find overrun clutches at a reasonable price. I got the one I use from Tractor Supply. Agri Supply also sells them. Along with multiple online sellers I will link a few. Just make sure your PTO size on your tractor. It can be 1 1/8 or 1 3/8. Originally 8n’s came with 1 1/8, but your’s may have been changed out over the years. They make them for 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 or 1 3/8 to 1 3/8.
