makal or soapstone is a porous stobe . Therefore its amazing to make fermented food lije curd / yoghurt / kefir at hone as the porous nature of the stine aids in better air circulation and microvial multiplication
Note - Dont use dish soap to clean as it can absorb the smell and you will end up with curd smelling like dish soap
Pros
1.easy to clean and naintain
2. clean with just salt and water no dish soap needed . you xan also use soapnut powder or wood ash
3. environmentally sustainable
4. saves money no need to buy dish soap
5.healthy for your gut . no ingesting harmful chemical residues
#Makal #soapstonepot #curdpot #kalchatti
cons
1 a little heavier than stainless steel or plastic
2 if not handled with a littke carw it can break

Hi Gargi , I know this video is of 2 years back but having a doubt that usually if we do curd fermentation process in steel vessel then we leave that for overnight and morning we will place the completed curd vessel in refrigerator so is that the same process with sopstone vessels also? do we need to place the vessel in the fridge after curd has made?

Hi manasa . I have been using makal curd pot for more than 1 year . I have never experienced any oily residue after washing with water . I always wash my vessels with hot water as a normal practice so at night I just fill the makal pot with hot water or normal water and close lid and next morning I will throw the water away and rinse and add salt and scrub with a soft side of a scrubber like scotch brite ( the softer yellow side ) I keep 2 scrubbers one for traditional vessels abd one for conventional steel vessels . So I will never use the scrubber for soap stone with soap.as it can absorb the soap residues .

Hello Gargi,if curd not available at home ,how to set curd using soapstone, please make video on this.

Hi shital . I haven't had this experience but I do understand that if we don't have curd at home a starter culture can be made by just placing a red chilly with its stalk intact overnight which will look like curd next morning Typically if I look at it scientifically the stalk of chilly would have yeast and other necessary microbes which would initiate the process of lacto fermentation. Next morning once you get the curd starter culture you can use that to set your usual curd in makal pot. The street culture can be made in any steel Bowl ad you wil only need 50 ml milk and 1-2 dried red chilly .

You can try with the upper stalk of the green chilly or dried chilly. You just have to immerse it in the warm milk.
