When a person is non-weight bearing, using a walker is easier than using crutches. This is because the walker is more stable than crutches.
When walking non-weight bearing it's easiest to use the sequencing of push the walker first, then step with the weightbearing leg.
Step, but do not hop.

Ty for this video I'm praying I can learn as I have been non weight bearing for close to 7 weeks . All the other channels show the hopping and I do not want to hop at age 60 . God bless you and appreciate this video so much 👍 I

Thank you so much for this video. I had surgery on my right foot and have to be non weight bearing for six weeks. Getting in and out of a wheelchair is hard for me because I have limited upper body strength. Using the walker at least keeps me from getting up and down so often. Your video showed the easiest and safest way to use the walker! Thanks again!!

I sprained my left ankle and fractured my right one. I was using crutches and it was difficult for me. I was hopping with my left foot injuring it more. I got me a walker and I was doing the same thing. This video showed me the proper way to use the walker. Thank you!

Thank you. This was awesome. I broke my pelvis last week. If that wasn't bad enough, the PT didn't adjust the walker for me and had it 6 inches too high. I started off with toe touch but she told me that was cheating and I tried very hard to comply with weight bearing but was in more pain the next day. I've been using a wheelchair for the 3 days since. I just couldn't get used to the walker because I was hopping. I figured out how to use it but my upper body is EXHAUSTED and my hands and shoulders hurt. Any other suggestions?

I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I have had many patients with a fractured pelvis and it's not fun. I usually tell my patients to "follow the doctor's orders". In some cases your doctor may not want you to do much, especially if there is a weight bearing precaution caregiverguides.net/weight-bearing-definition Also, its going to take several weeks for your bones to knit together, I usually tell people to limit their attempts at walking to the bear necessities such as going to the bathroom or when getting into and out of the car for medical appointments. BTW, you can always fire your PT if they are giving you bad info and request another one that may be more in tune with your needs. We all try to do our best, but we are not perfect by any means. I am certain I tried to overdo it yesterday, the no pain no gain tenet : ( I am actually very fortunate to own a medical practice with a therapist on staff who has to suffer through my MD know it all attitude 😵. The misguided therapist was at the hospital. BTW, what I especially liked about your videos -- simple and to the point!

But how do you use a walker on stairs if you are non-weigh bearing?

If you're non-weight bearing it may be better to use crutches if you have many conventional steps. But, crutches require more overall coordination. If it's just 2-3 platform style steps that can accommodate the depth of the walker then using a walker is possible. If it's a flight of stairs and the person is relatively fit, scooting up and down the stairs is always an option too. I'll have to make a future video that addresses this question.

How do you prevent the strain on your arms and shoulders? I'm non weight bearing on my right knee from a break. But the pain in my arms and shoulders is unbearable

I'm so sorry that you're injured, Victoria. Unfortunately the arms have to take the body weight when you're NWB, but it's important to have your walker adjusted to the proper height so that your getting the best leverage. Also, keep in mind that you're NWB on only one of your legs so that means you can stand on the other leg. When you're standing on your weight bearing leg, this gives time for the arms to relax a bit. Not knowing your specific case, if it's your foot or lower leg that is injured, your doctor may be able to prescribe a knee scooter. This is a much easier way to get around than a walker but it's only useful for certain injuries.

@Simple Steps Mobility thanks. It's a tibial plateau fracture. Walker is adjusted according to videos I've seen, at wrist level. I do stop and rest on my left leg, I just wondered if there were any tips on how to limit strain on arms and shoulders. I put cushions on the walker handles, but not much help. I try and limit any trips just to the bathroom. After a month, I was hoping it would get easier. Hopefully, only 1 month left.
